Why hasn't the Catholic Church been more successful up to now in realizing the Second Vatican Council's call for the evangelization of secular culture? Why hasn't the Gospel been preached more forthrightly to the modern world? The most important reason, as well as the least recognized, may be clericalism: the attitude, widely shared by Catholic laypeople as well as many priests, that clerics make up the active, elite corps in the Church, and laypeople are the passive mass; that clerics alone have intrinsic responsibility for the Church's mission while the apostalate of laypeople comes to them (if they come at all) only by delegation on the part of the clergy. To Hunt, To Shoot, To Entertain probes the theological and historical roots of this clericalist mentality as it has affected the Catholic laity, along with contemporary expressions of clericalism--the over-involvement of some clerics in secular politics, the sometimes exaggerated emphasis given to "lay ministers," and certain aspects for the feminist movement in today's Catholicism. This is not another revisionist attack on the priesthood, not one more alienated voice from the pews. Instead the book offers a prescription for authentic ecclesial renewal based on new, healthier lay-clergy relations in light of the teaching of Vatican II, Pope John Paul II, and other voices of the Magisterium. It presents a positive vision of a Church in which laypeople and clergy regard one another with mutual respect as partners in her mission to the world, with indispensable, contemporary tasks arising from their own special vocations.

Faith That Dares To Speak written by Donald B. Cozzens and has been published by Liturgical Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-15 with Religion categories.

The Catholic Church at the dawn of the twenty-first century is arguably the last feudal system in the West. Once the feudal structure of the church is recognized, the bishops' response to the clergy abuse crisis comes into focus. Bishops and other church authorities reacted to the scandal the only way their feudal culture allowed--with secrecy, denial, and a no holds barred effort to protect the reputation, authority, and resources of the institution. While tragic, and in many cases reprehensible, their response was consistent with the way feudal systems function. In Faith That Dares to Speak, Donald Cozzens addresses the laity's role in challenging a feudal church to embrace accountability and transparency and to bring light where there is now darkness. Awakened to their dignity and responsibility as full, equal, and adult members of the church, lay Catholics in North America are finding their voice and daring to speak to church authorities long accustomed to deferential obedience and compliance. Church life, Cozzens believes, will never be quite the same. The current crisis in the Church, while profoundly disturbing and troubling, offers possibilities for a renewed and revitalized Church. In Faith That Dares to Speak, Cozzens underscores the critical need for laity and clergy to speak honestly and courageously to church authorities. He addresses the obstacles to faithful speech as well as the spiritual and moral foundations of mature, adult conversation and commitment. Big Game Shooting is a book full of both fascinating tales and practical advice on a kind of hunting that has gone quite seriously out of fashion. This is both a collection of stories about hunting big game and an instructional on topics of interest to the avid marksman. The book is separated into chapters, of which Clive Phillipps-Wolley has authored four, with guest contributors responsible for the remaining sections. Chapters vary in terms of scope, with some examining a single breed of game and others more broadly discussing a topic of interest to the hunting community. Specific topics detailed including arctic hunting, the stag of the Alps, the Scandinavian elk, the large game of Spain and Portugal, and several others. The book transitions to a series of instructional chapters that focus on setting up camps and transportation, selecting rifles and ammunition, and hints on preservation and taxidermy. The title is concluded by a detailed appendix. Big Game Shooting is a work that will appeal to the hunting enthusiast. The first-hand accounts of hunting expeditions that form the largest section of the book are entertaining and educational. The instructional chapters can be read both practically and as a text illuminating the history of hunting practices. While Clive Phillipps-Wolley receives credit as the primary author, all of the included writers provide meaningful contributions to the work. While the practice of shooting big game is less than highly regarded among environmentally concious individuals much of this advice will also help those "hunting" with a camera. The tales of hunting expeditions are entertaining, and the advice provided practical. Big Game Shooting is a worthwhile read.
