Excerpt from To-Morrow in the East This book makes no pretence to be a treatise on the trend of events in the Orient, yet is it something more than the impressions of a globe-trotter. It represents the result of ten years' observation as war-correspondent and special correspondent in the countries of the East, as editor of a daily newspaper in Hong Kong, and as a resident in Peking. Excerpt from The East of to-Day and to-Morrow On the morning when I first saw Canton, looking from my cabin window I found our steamer surrounded by an apparently end less flotilla of Chinese house-boats, and stood fascinated by the almost myriad life with which they teemed. No one who has not seen it has ever seen anything like it. The boats are twenty or thirty feet long, and are Shop, kitchen, freight-house, bed room, nursery, store-room, all in one, with sometimes a family of fifteen or twenty persons to crowd and strive, eat and Sleep, fight for the opportunity to earn their scanty wage, by day or night, and often to be born and die in them. The children swarm like ants, and almost before they can speak are tied to an oar and made to pull it. But when they are not tied thus they are sometimes hustled over the side of the boat. They Sink out of sight, and that is the end of them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An Idyl: Some Sermons and a Song The myriad hearts of men, for that they see, Or think they see, at eve the morrow's east Dance with the splendor of the risen king, Who slept against the night. Not so the sick, Who scarce can hope five heavy breaths to draw. These dread the dark, impatient cry the dawn, TO travel to the land of mystery, Their path lit by the lamp God set in Heaven. Excerpt from A Confident to-Morrow: A Novel of New York When at last the train stood still, and the impatient passengers poured forth and pressed forward as though a prize had been offered to the one who should first reach the ferry-boat, Frank Sartain found himself hastening ahead as eagerly as any of the others. He was glad of a chance to stretch his legs again, for he was weary with the two nights spent on the cars, and with the long intervening day. He felt draggled and dirty from his journey; and as the procession of passengers came out into the open air, he drew a long breath, as though to cleanse his lungs. A breeze blew in from the river, damp but not chill, considering the time of the year. Sartain wondered if it were always as mild as this in New York in the middle of October. He had not been East for several years; and even at best his acquaintance with the great city was confined to two or three chance visits when the college glee club had come down to give its annual concert. And now he was entering New York to stay; it was in New York hereafter that he was to wage the battle of life, and to fight his way to the front. Excerpt from Signs and Portents, in the Far East Vents of to day in the Far East are posters for to -morrow. No white man can wander, as the writer Of these pages did last summer, through China, Manchuria, Korea, and Japan, without having forced upon his sight some of the inscriptions which these posters bear. The impressions here set down are those of an anglo-indian journalist who does not apologise for his point of View, since the potentialities of India as the coadjutor of Great Britain in the future of the Far East can hardly be over-estimated. That future is perhaps the most serious problem of the twentieth century. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Children of to-Morrow: A Romance The twilight of a raw evening early in May dimly pervaded Felix Dane's studio, sombre with the drawn blue-black window-screens. The fire smouldered in the grate, although every now and again the flame spurted upward and cast fantastic flickerings athwart the walls, or ruddy gleams upon the figures, carven in marble or wrought in clay, which occupied so much of the underspace of the lofty apartment. The shadows were so deep that neither the size of the room nor what it contained would have been obvious to any intruder - to whom little would have been visible but the partial outlines of various sculptures, a white mass upon the floor, and a man, with bent body and face shrouded in his hands, seated in an arm-chair, a few yards from the fire.
