From one of the great naval leaders of our time, a master class in decision making under pressure through the stories of nine famous acts of leadership in battle drawn from the history of the United States Navy, with outcomes both glorious and notorious At the heart of Admiral James Stavridis’s training as a naval officer was the preparation to lead sailors in combat, to face the decisive moment in battle when it arises and make the best decision possible given the situation at hand. Over the course of his illustrious career he returned again and again to a relatively small number of legendary cases in point, holding them to the light repeatedly to see what lessons they yielded. Now, in To Risk it All, he offers up nine of the most useful and enthralling stories from the US Navy’s nearly 250-year history and draws from them a set of insights that can be of use to all of us when confronted with fateful choices. Conflict. Crisis. Risk. These are words that have a meaning in a military context that we hope will never apply in quite the same way in our own lives. At the same time, as To Risk it All shows with great clarity, many lessons are universal. The first is simply understanding whether you’re really in an acute short-terms crisis or are confusing it with a more long-term challenge that can’t and shouldn’t be met with a short-term fix. Second, while fortune favors the bold, it favors the prepared even more. A huge part of preparation is learning how to observe a situation clearly on its own terms first, avoiding biases and misinformation, before applying the lens of your values and analysis. Easier said than done, but there is a learning path. With the right preparation, you can force time to slow down, and draw on the best of yourself, and leave the rest out of it. To Risk it All is filled with heroic exploits, thrillingly told, but it is anything but a shallow exercise in myth burnishing. Every leader in this book has real flaws, as all humans do, and Admiral Stavridis takes the analysis of their flaws as seriously as he does their strengths. The stories of failure, or at least decisions that have often been defined as such, are as crucial to the book as the stories of success. In the end, when this master class is dismissed, we can feel lucky for the hard situations we will never have to face, and better armed for the hard decisions we surely will, whether we expect them or not.

General John Forbes’s campaign against Fort Duquesne was the largest over-land expedition during the Seven Years’ War in America. While most histories of the time period include the Forbes Campaign as an aside, McConnell documents how and why Forbes and his army succeeded, and what his success meant to the subsequent history of the mid-Atlantic colonies, native inhabitants of the Ohio Country, and the empire he represented. A close look at the Forbes Campaign and its personnel reveals much about both British relations with native peoples and the nature of Britain’s American empire during a time of stress. Unlike other campaigns, this one was composed largely of colonial—not professional British—troops. In addition, individual colonies negotiated their role in the campaign and frequently placed their own local interests ahead of those of the empire as a whole. The campaign thus suggests the limits of imperial power and how Britain’s hold over its American frontiers was, at best, tenuous and helped lead to an eventual break-down of empire in the 1760s and 1770s.

In this twisted tale of love, murder, and family secrets, nothing is ever as it seems. Identical twin sisters Tokyo and India are as opposite as night and day. India is content with going to college and planning a family, while Tokyo runs a murder-for-hire business that has been extremely profitable for her. She has no patience for men or love in her life. She takes big risks to make money and always gets her target by any means necessary. It is during one of those big risks that Tokyo meets the man who would unexpectedly sweep her off her feet. Python runs the city, unbeknownst to Tokyo, and after he saves her from an incident that almost costs her life, he wants her to himself . . . for both business and pleasure. Tokyo has never allowed herself to fall in love before, but Python’s boss swagger soon has her smitten with him. She breaks her rules and lets him into her heart, but loving him will come with severe consequences. India has been with the same man for years, but since getting pregnant with his child, she has noticed that he is acting very suspiciously. Still wanting to have faith in her man, she ignores her intuition that something more is going on than what he’s telling her. When her sister finally reveals the truth about him to her, she refuses to believe it, and the tight bond the twins once shared is shattered. Jacob was abandoned at birth by his mother. He comes to town on a crazy quest to find her and kill her and the siblings she decided to keep. Once he discovers the life that Python has, Jacob decides he wants to claim that for himself. Revenge is replaced with jealousy, and Jacob becomes obsessed and does everything in his power to become him, even if that means hurting people in the process. He finds unlikely help in India, and together they devise a plan to make them rich.

Should We Risk It written by Daniel M. Kammen and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-05 with Science categories.

How dangerous is smoking? What are the risks of nuclear power or of climate change? What are the chances of dying on an airplane? More importantly, how do we use this information once we have it? The demand for risk analysts who are able to answer such questions has grown exponentially in recent years. Yet programs to train these analysts have not kept pace. In this book, Daniel Kammen and David Hassenzahl address that problem. They draw together, organize, and seek to unify previously disparate theories and methodologies connected with risk analysis for health, environmental, and technological problems. They also provide a rich variety of case studies and worked problems, meeting the growing need for an up-to-date book suitable for teaching and individual learning. The specific problems addressed in the book include order-of-magnitude estimation, dose-response calculations, exposure assessment, extrapolations and forecasts based on experimental or natural data, modeling and the problems of complexity in models, fault-tree analysis, managing and estimating uncertainty, and social theories of risk and risk communication. The authors cover basic and intermediate statistics, as well as Monte Carlo methods, Bayesian analysis, and various techniques of uncertainty and forecast evaluation. The volume's unique approach will appeal to a wide range of people in environmental science and studies, health care, and engineering, as well as to policy makers confronted by the increasing number of decisions requiring risk and cost/benefit analysis. Should We Risk It? will become a standard text in courses involving risk and decision analysis and in courses of applied statistics with a focus on environmental and technological issues.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I was inducted into the Navy in 1970, and on my first day, I was given a quick haircut and marched around the grounds with my fellow classmates. We were then lined up in a formation and marched around the grounds by our senior midshipmen readers. #2 John Paul Jones was a naval officer who grew up on a large estate in Scotland. He was a classic sea warrior, and his fighting spirit was remarkable. He was willing to lead from the front, whether in close boarding fights or personally aiming a cannon. #3 John Paul Jones was a sea captain who volunteered his services to the Continental Navy in 1775. He was posted as the first lieutenant toward the end of that year to a twenty-four-gun frigate, Alfred. He quickly gained command of a sloop of war, the Providence, in 1776. #4 By 1779, Jones was given command of a larger, albeit slow and occasionally unseaworthy, vessel, the forty-two-gun United States Ship Bonhomme Richard. He was a reconfigured merchant ship given to the Americans by the French.
