Excerpt from To the American Indian As there has been so much said and written about the American Indians, with my tribe, the Klamath Indians, included, by the white people, which is guessed at and not facts, I deem it necessary to first tell you who I am, for which please do not criticise me as egotistical. I am a pure full blooded Klamath river woman. In our tongue we call this great river by the name of Health-kick-werroy, and I wear the Tat-toos on my chin that has been the custom for our women for many generations. I was born at Pecwan village, and of highest birth or what we term under the highest laws of marriage. I am known by my people as a Talth. My maiden name was Che-na-wah Weiteh-ah-wah, Chena-wah being my given name. My father, being also a Talth, took me at a very early age and began training me in all of the mysteries and laws of my people. It took me years to learn and the ordeal was a hard one. I was made a Talth and given the true name of God, the Creator of all things, and taught the meaning of every article that is used in our festivals, together with all the laws governing our people. I can understand every word, every nod and gesture made in our language. Therefore I feel that I am in a better position than any other person to tell the true facts of the religion and the meaning of the many things that we used to commemorate the events of the past. In this book I will endeavor to tell all in a plain and truthful way without the least coloring of the facts, and will add many of our fairy tales and mothers stories to their children. I will also give the names of many things in my own native tongue. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Myths of the North American Indians It is, indeed, surprising how vague a picture the North American Indian presents to the minds Of most people in Europe when all that recent anthropological research has done on the subject is taken into account. As a matter of fact, few books have been published in England which furnish more than the scantiest details concerning the Red Race, and these are in general scarce, and, when obtained, Of doubtful scientific value. Excerpt from American Indian Stories A wigwam of weather-stained canvas stood at the base of some irregularly ascending hills. A footpath wound its way gently down the sloping land till it reached the broad river bot tom; creeping through the long swamp grasses that bent over it on either side, it came out on the edge of the Missouri. Excerpt from The Story of the American Indian: His Origin, Development, Decline and Destiny The popular opinion of the American Indian has for generations been based upon prejudice and ignorance - as thoughtless as it is unreasoning and unjust. The red man of America may be no saint, but he is at least a man and should not be condemned unheard. He has his side of the story quite as much as has his white conqueror. Desire, acquisition, superiority, indifference - these have been the steps toward the ostracism that has been visited upon the American Indian, denying him justice and opportunity for advancement since the earliest days of white occupation. It is these barriers to progress that have alike created and complicated the vexed Indian problem. This volume does not attempt to state or solve that problem. It simply seeks to arrange in something like complete and consecutive form the story of the North American Indian as he has existed for generations, and as from supremacy in the land of his fathers he has fallen under the ban of the white civilization that conquered and displaced him. The mistreatment of the Indian, a recent writer declares, is one of the abuses of the age, and one of the reproaches of civilization. It is high time that the abuse and the reproach should give place to something like fairness and moral sense. If this story of a race that has played its part in the drama of human progress shall lead readers to exchange indifference for interest and contempt for justice, the labor and study that it has involved will not have been in vain. A mass of material bearing on the Indians story has been consulted and drawn upon, and the author makes grateful acknowledgment of his obligation to Miss Tracy Thompson of Brooklyn for interested and painstaking assistance in this direction. Excerpt from The Genesis of the American Indian Without discussing any of the speculations connected with the subject, we will approach directly the several questions into which this problem resolves itself. The foremost of these is that of the unity or plurality of the Indian race. We know that the aboriginal population of America was divided into a great many tribes and even a number of what might be called nations, often hostile to one another; we have learned that there were many different languages and dialects, remarkable differences in culture and the material results of culture, and also marked differences in the physiognomy, color, details of physique, and in the behavior of the different groups of Indians - all of which would seem to indicate that there might have existed some, if not considerable, racial diversity. But if these matters are subjected to careful and comprehensive scrutiny, we' find that the various differences presented by the Indians are Often more apparent than real; that actual and important differences are in no case of suffi cient weight to permit of any racial dissociation on that basis; and that the more substantial differences which exist between the tribes are everywhere underlaid by fundamental similarities and identities that outweigh them and which speak strongly not only against any plurality of race on the American continent but for the general original unity of the Indians.
