Therefore this book aims to deal with the business side of farming and to assemble the scientific knowledge of agriculture as studied and practiced by a number of experts. In order to make this practical knowledge more accessible to the farmer, technical terms have been eliminated and an easily comprehended terminology has been maintained throughout the book. The author is indebted to many experiment stations for their cooperation in supplying information and illustrations, credit for which is given in the pages of this book. Excerpt from Practical Farming: A Treatise on Present Farming Conditions and How to Improve Them Coming from Nebraska recently, my son said to me, Father, you should write a book on farming, for you have given me lessons in farming, and I raise double the amount of oats and corn the farmers do in Illinois, and my land is no better than my neighbors'. If you can write a book and show the farmers how they can improve their systems of farming, you will be a great public benefactor. While traveling in the Old World, particularly in India and China, I saw the table lands worn out and abandoned. Will this not happen in our country unless the farmers change their systems of farming and study how to improve their land? If you could show the farmers how to improve their land in a practical way instead of making it poorer, wouldn't it be the best work of your life? Influenced by this suggestion, I submit my ideas. Having lived on a farm for twelve years - from the time I was fourteen years old to the twenty-sixth year of my life - having plowed, mowed, cradled, and done every kind of work connected with afarm, and having owned and operated farms practically all my life, I feel that this experience gives me some knowledge of farming, and enables me to present some practical ideas to those who may be inter ested in my conclusions. I notice that the rich farmers are the men who have systems and keep their land in a high state of culti vation. The farmer with no system and land worn out is the poor farmer. I feel that it is the duty of every man who has had any experience in cultivating soil to give publicity to his efforts and progress along this line, and thus add to the success of the American farmer. I put the formulæ in the order of their ranking importance. We are investing millions of dollars in teaching the science of better farming; we are seeking the means of better living for the farmer, but to realize the benefits of better farming and better living we must be religious in our efforts to instill in the minds of the American farmers the necessity for and the means of acquiring and applying the principles of better business. The science of better farming and the plans for better living will not avail unless the foundation - better business - is carefully ingrained in our scheme of agriculture. Before the days of our excellent transportation facilities each farming community could control its markets and general business by the application of a very simple system - of exchange, sale, and purchase. Since the advent of good transportation facilities no agricultural community in this country is independent of any other section of the country or of the world in general. Prices for our products are fixed by the prices available in the large business centers and our markets are open to invasion by farmers from other sections who can produce our products more cheaply and better in quality. Better business on the farm reaches into every item of farm life. The layout of the farm with its buildings and fields should be planned as a manufacturing plant is planned - for efficiency. The rotation of crops to be followed should be planned with an eye to definite maximum results; the breeds of live stock to be handled should be chosen on the basis of potential profits; the community spirit, or the association with fellow farmers, should be fostered in a businesslike manner because it is good business; communication with the general business world - or what is generally known as boosting - should be done aggressively by the farmers, for good boosting is good business.
