Dándolo a conocer en esta cooperación editorial. Sabido es que el Trastorno por Uso de Tabaco, denominado técnicamente como TUT (clásicamente se ha hecho referencia al TUT como hábito tabáquico o tabaquismo), supone un problema de salud de primer orden en el mundo, afectando a población vulnerable como son, fundamentalmente, las personas con otros trastornos mentales, que ven aumentada su morbimortalidad por este motivo. La elevada prevalencia del TUT en personas con otros trastornos mentales se relaciona principalmente con factores comunes, genéticos y neurobiológicos vinculados al sistema colinérgico nicotínico cerebral implicado en el funcionamiento mental, en la salud y la enfermedad. Los pacientes con trastornos mentales podrían encontrar en la nicotina que se libera en el uso de tabaco una mejora en su funcionamiento mental a nivel cognitivo y emocional, obteniendo efectos positivos sobre la neurocognición, el estado de ánimo, la ansiedad y ciertos rasgos patológicos. Las dificultades en conseguir abstinencia de tabaco, objetivo deseable, son evidentes en una proporción muy amplia de pacientes, por lo que se deben proponer metas realistas que aseguren una disminución del daño. Ninguna de las diferentes estrategias farmacológicas de tratamiento es totalmente eficaz y requiere ser administrada por periodos prolongados de tiempo, como otros psicofármacos. Como perspectivas de futuro, el diagnóstico del TUT debería obtener mayor relevancia para que los pacientes con otros trastornos mentales, patología dual, puedan recibir la atención multidisciplinar y tratamiento integrado adecuados que les permita reducir o abandonar el consumo de tabaco.

Smoking-related diseases kill more Americans than alcohol, illegal drugs, murder and suicide combined. The passage of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009 gave the FDA authority to regulate "modified risk tobacco products" (MRTPs), tobacco products that are either designed or advertised to reduce harm or the risk of tobacco-related disease. MRTPs must submit to the FDA scientific evidence to demonstrate the product has the potential to reduce tobacco related harms as compared to conventional tobacco products. The IOM identifies minimum standards for scientific studies that an applicant would need to complete to obtain an order to market the product from the FDA.
