Known as the 'Edgar Allan Poe of cinema', Tod Browning is the dark master of filmmaking. However, despite the commercial success he enjoyed during his lifetime, he has never received the critical acclaim his work deserves. The Films of Tod Browning at last pays tribute to his cinematic legacy. With contributors including Vivian Sobchack, Bernd Herzogenrath and Nicole Brenez, The Films of Tod Browning covers subjects including images of disability, the body as spectacle, the transition from silent to 'talkie' films and theatrical illusion in Browning's films as well as analysing films such as Dracula, Mark of the Vampire and the often overlooked Iron Man in detail. An essential for film buffs and academics alike.

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1, University of Frankfurt (Main) (Amerikanistik), course: Introducing Tod Browning, language: English, abstract: Ever since the horror genre has established, it has fascinated viewers around the world. Despite (and to some degree also because of) its controversial status, the horror film has gained much popularity. At the same time it has also been the target of critics. Especially in academic writing the horror film seems to have been neglected. Nonetheless, the horror film has this one peculiarity that other genres don't have. As Rick Worland correctly stated, "A given phase of the horror film often reveals something about the times that produced it, exposing anxieties and outright fears of those days, though doing so in a roundabout or thoroughly unintentional way." (Worland 55-56). Thus there have been many approaches on the horror film and the cultural fear in it. Among other interpretations, the theory of the cultural fear of war has become significant. The connection between war and the cultural fear is definitely not arbitrary. To a great part, this expression is the product of the fearful events that occured in western society. But the content of most horror movies not only indicates the fear of events that took place. these expressions in the horror film have often been understood as metaphors of the fear of a social reconstruction, hence as the fear of things to come- Wars have always existed, and the horror genre has not, at least not as aunique genre. Compared to other genres in literature, the gothic novel - nowadays recognized as the predecessor of the horror genre - came about very late. The emancipation of women, being an important factor in the social construction of modern times, has also established very late. Is this just a coincidence, or does this indicate a stronger connection between cultural fear and the emancipation of women? With respect to that, this term paper will specifically deal with two of Tod Browning's most popular movies: "Freaks" and "Dracula". The first part of this term paper will consider the expression of fear in horror movies as an unconscious reaction to the emancipation of women. Particularly Pierre Bourdieu's ideas in Masculine Domination and Norbert Elias' schemes in The Established and the Outsiders will help to understand the impact of the emancipation of women on the horror genre. In the two chapters that follow, Bourdieu's and Elias' ideas will be applied on "Freaks" and "Dracula"...

The Cinema Of Tod Browning written by Bernd Herzogenrath and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-09-08 with Performing Arts categories.

As a director, actor, writer and producer, Tod Browning was one of the most dynamic Hollywood figures during the birth of commercial cinema. Known for his fantastic collaborations with Lon Chaney in numerous silents, and for directing the horror classic Dracula and the still-controversial Freaks, Browning has been called "the Edgar Allan Poe of the cinema." Despite not entering the profession until he began acting in his early thirties, he went on to helm more than 60 films in a 25-year career. His work continues to influence directors such as David Lynch, John Waters, and Alejandro Jodorowsky. These essays critically explore such topics as the connection between Browning, Poe and Kant; Browning's cinematic techniques; disability; masochism; sound and suspense; duality; parenthood; narrative and cinematic trickery; George Melford; surrealism; and the occult. A Browning filmography is included.

This thesis analyses motifs of vampirism in gothic film parodies on the basis of Mel Brooks "Dracula: Dead and Loving it," which parodies its original "Dracula" by Tod Browning. The contrasting juxtaposition of the two films serves to provide the parodic constructions of vampirism. By using the six methods of parody by Dan Harris - reiteration, inversion, misdirection, literalizitation, extraneous inclusion and exaggeration - the parodic constructions will be examined. This works aims to find answers to the question what is left of the old-fashioned motifs of vampirism.

Cross and wooden stake in hand, Dr. Gary D. Rhodes re-enters the sepulcher of supernatural cinema, casting his lantern's light on Universal’s 1936 classic Dracula’s Daughter. With fellow tomb raiders Tom Weaver and Michael Lee, he discovers long-forgotten lore, presented herein with the film’s original shooting script, pressbook and a large array of other freshly exhumed extras. "A comprehensive tribute to one of Hollywood's classic horror films. My grandmother, Gloria Holden, was a legend in her time, and would have been so very proud.” – Laurie Holden, costar of The Walking Dead “As he always does (better than anyone), Gary D. Rhodes chronicles the convoluted history of the film (how the budget grew while still having the look of a “B” film; how Bela Lugosi came and went in the cast – but still had to be paid), and why it took two years to finally get produced. Bravo, Gary. There is a reason your film scholarship is lauded everywhere. Dracula’s Daughter is another feather in your cap!” – Richard Klemensen, editor of Little Shoppe of Horrors magazine “Rhodes' coverage of this classic production and the endless minutiae with which he showers readers and fans are a credit to this book yet typical of Rhodes' acumen as a film scholar historian. His attention to detail opens floodgates for scholars and academics engaged in theory who rely on the sort of archival work that Rhodes makes appear effortless. Buy two copies of this volume – for one the shelf, and the other for notations, research, dog-earing, and pleasure-reading.” – John Edgar Browning, Ph.D., coauthor of Dracula in Visual Media and editor of The Forgotten Writings of Bram Stoker "Everything you could possibly want to know about the making of Dracula’s Daughter, and the long process that led to its production, can be found in this definitive volume. Rhodes provides a fascinating account of how the seemingly obvious idea of a sequel to Dracula became a drawn-out process. It involved changing regimes at Universal Pictures, several top screenwriters, and Bela Lugosi, who at one time was set to appear in the film. Tom Weaver adds pages of trivia notes—some less trivial than others—and Michael Lee contributes an erudite discussion of the music score and its evolution. The book also includes several unused treatments (by John L. Balderston, Kurt Neumann, and R.C. Sheriff), a facsimile of Zacherle’s television send-up of the picture, and much of the original Universal pressbook. This is a cornucopia of goodies for any horror movie buff. The highest compliment I can offer is that it made me want to watch Dracula’s Daughter again…which I intend to do." - Leonard Maltin "The Scripts from the Crypt gang strikes again with another exhaustively researched, generously illustrated and entertainingly written winner." - VideoScope Holy flashback – where are my Garbage Pail Kids and Nintendo? I felt like it was 1990 all over again when I received the newest book in BearManor’s Scripts from the Crypt series and it turned out to be Dracula’s Daughter (BearManor Media, hardcover $34.95 / softcover $24.95). The reason for my flashback: To date, the Scripts from the Crypt series has concentrated on 1950s schlock (The Hideous Sun Demon, Indestructible Man, Bride of the Gorilla, Bride of the Monster, more), so holding a new volume on a classic 1930s Universal gave me a déjà vu moment: I was back in the late 80s-early 90s when individual books on the monster flicks of Universal’s Golden Age were being cranked out hot and heavy (cold and clammy?) by MagicImage author Gregory Mank. Dracula’s Daughter wasn’t part of the MagicImage collection, but now that gap has been filled by Gary D. Rhodes. His 42-page essay on the making of this movie begins by charting the history of some of the vampire (and “vamp”) movies of the silent era and then tackles the convoluted story of the on-again off-again process of planning and making Dracula’s Daughter. Multiple writers, multiple scripts, multiple directors (including James Whale) attached to the project, Bela Lugosi coming and going from the proposed cast, the 1930s Horror Ban looming, Universal on the verge of being sold – the tale is as intricate as one of Castle Dracula’s most ornate spider webs, but Rhodes slow-walks us through it and backs everything up with quotes from Universal memos, trade paper announcements, etc. A premier horror historian, Rhodes is in good form here, as always. Scripts from the Crypt curator Tom Weaver weighs in with 29 pages of “Fun Facts,” each item separated by clip art of a bat. Many are interesting, some are arcane (the make and model of the foreign car driven by Marguerite Churchill’s character!). The best part might be a series of factoids about Gloria Holden, who plays the title role. It appears that the lady was quite age-conscious: She had a son in the early 1920s but in later years, apparently embarrassed by this giveaway as to her age, passed him off in Hollywood as her brother! In the 40s, she married a man young enough to BE her son (he died only a few years ago), and may have kept her true age from him. Holden lied about her age her whole long life and even afterwards: On her grave marker, her birth year is 1917 (which would make her a teenager in Dracula’s Daughter). That’s shaving off quite a number of years, as she was actually born around the turn of the twentieth century. Some of my favorite photos are in the “Fun Facts” part of the book, including a delightful one of Nan Grey – no, not as Dracula’s Daughter’s victim Lili, but one taken in 1969, decades after her retirement from the screen. In it, she’s shooting pool with husband Frankie Laine. The reproduced script has a few pages missing (Rhodes acknowledges this), but we get compensation in the form of short sections of early scripts that are nothing like the eventual movie. One, rather gory and daring for its day, even features Dracula (the role that, of course, Lugosi would have played). The everything-plus-the-kitchen-sink treatment continues with a chapter on the music, the pressbook, a 1953 treatment titled Carmilla (it would have been Universal’s second “lady vampire” movie—and Marlene Dietrich was considered for the lead) – even the script that John Zacherle used on the night in 1958 when Philadelphia’s WCAU-TV ran Dracula’s Daughter with Zacherle horror-hosting. At about 350 pages (perhaps the thickest Scripts from the Crypt book yet), Dracula’s Daughter tells you everything you ever wanted to know and lots that you didn't know that you wanted to know. (William Holden, nee Bill Beadle, was named after Gloria Holden??) BearManor previously (2009) published a thoroughly dispensable book on Dracula’s Daughter so remember when ordering this one to specify that you want the Gary D. Rhodes Scripts from the Crypt book. You’re in for a bloody good time. -- -- Classic Images

The primal image of the black-caped vampire Dracula has become an indelible fixture of the modern imagination. It's recognition factor rivals, in its own perverse way, the familiarity of Santa Claus. Most of us can recite without prompting the salient characteristics of the vampire: sleeping by day in its coffin, rising at dusk to feed on the blood of the living; the ability to shapeshift into a bat, wolf, or mist; a mortal vulnerability to a wooden stake through the heart or a shaft of sunlight. In this critically acclaimed excursion through the life of a cultural icon, David Skal maps out the archetypal vampire's relentless trajectory from Victorian literary oddity to movie idol to cultural commidity, digging through the populist veneer to reveal what the prince of darkness says about us all.

“THE GRAVE WILL GIVE UP ITS OWN, UNTIL THE WORLD WILL BE FILLED WITH THE WALKING DEAD.” London throbs with terror when the dead rise from their graves and walk its streets. The city will soon be overrun. The horror of it all is driving residents to madness and suicide. One victim suffers possession, stigmata and crucifixion. With occult forces at work, civilization may be doomed! Decades before Night of the Living Dead (1968), The Exorcist (1973) and other industrial-strength shockers, Tod Browning’s 1932 screen treatment and script The Revolt of the Dead anticipated their horrors – and at the same time echoed Browning’s Dracula (1931) by featuring duplicates of several of that film’s major characters. Enter an unexplored corner of Browning’s universe as the Scripts from the Crypt series world-premieres this ultra-rare work, along with background information unearthed by the redoubtable Prof. Gary D. Rhodes. To delve deeper into Browning’s storytelling process, Professors Rhodes, Nathaniel Bell, Will Dodson and Robert Guffey examine multiple script drafts of Browning’s Freaks (1932), Mark of the Vampire (1935) and The Devil-Doll (1936) and document the step-by-step evolution of those macabre tales. The cinematic universe of Classic Horror’s “darkest” director is about to get weirder, wilder and more shocking! “A trove of fascinating materials that sheds light on Browning projects made and unmade.” — Murray Leeder, Horror Film: A Critical Introduction "We justifiably gnash our teeth over what might-have-been had George Romero's sadly unfilmed 1980s Day of the Dead screenplay been made as Romero intended—anticipating as it did so much of what followed, including The Walking Dead TV series—but far, far more mind-blowing is this rediscovery of this lost screenplay to Tod Browning's unfilmed horror epic Revolt of the Dead. Expanding upon Abel Gance's hallucinatory march-of-the-WWI-dead climax to the 1919 J'Accuse, transforming William Seabrook's localized Haitian zombie scourge of his 1929 bestseller The Magic Island into an apocalyptic pandemic, what Browning intended to bring to the screen in 1932 would have scandalized & devastated audiences, rocketing the horror genre decades beyond what was considered even remotely possible at the time. Revelatory, relentless, essential reading!" - Stephen R. Bissette (Swamp Thing, Taboo, Studio of Screams, Midnight Movie Monograph: David Cronenberg's The Brood)

Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, Free University of Berlin (Institut für Englische Philologie), course: Cultural Studies: Life after Death, language: English, abstract: Vampires – Ever since, they exist in human belief. During the ages the image of the vampire underwent a massive change. Simply regarding the different genres in which the cinematic vampire appears it becomes clear that those changes are primarily based on the changes in society. The following is aimed at describing these changes and exploring their causes by analyzing the vampire’s characteristics in its relation to the respective cultural background. First, the origin of the vampire myth will be discussed. Furthermore the most popular literary character originating from the Gothic horror genre, Count Dracula by Bram Stoker, will be examined to point out the changes of the vampire image as well as the cultural message behind the figure Dracula. The paper will take an additional look at the development of the concept of the vampire and the underlying cultural trends by analyzing the early cinematic vampires Count Orlok from Nosferatu and Dracula by Tod Browning. Finally, the work will create a reference to the present image of the vampire by analyzing Edward Cullen, the protagonist in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight. The result of the analysis is intended to reflect the changeableness of the vampire concept as well as show to what extent the vampire can be used as a medium to represent the respective societal needs, trends and changes.
