Diese Frage hat jahrzehntelang die Forschung zum mittelalterlichen Minnesang und zur höfischen Liebe beschäftigt. Mit und nach Leo Spitzer (1944) galt es als ausgemacht, dass die Trobadors auf die ›Erfüllung‹ ihrer Liebe verzichtet hätten, um nicht das als süß empfundene Begehren nach dieser Erfüllung zu verlieren. So sei also die Liebe der Trobadors von einem Paradox bestimmt: die sexuelle Vereinigung zu begehren und zugleich auf sie zu verzichten. Die vorliegende Studie fragt, inwieweit diese These vom paradoxe amoureux angesichts der (späteren) Einsichten der Trobadorforschung über ›Aufführung‹, Repräsentativität und Performativität noch Gültigkeit beanspruchen darf. Überdies wird die Vorstellung vom Tod der Liebe durch Erfüllung der Liebe in einen größeren Diskurshorizont gestellt. Does the love of a man for the previously passionately desired female person end with the sexual union? This question has for decades occupied the research on the medieval minnesong and on courtly love. With and after Leo Spitzer (1944) it was considered agreed that the troubadours renounced the fulfillment of their love so as not to lose their desire perceived as sweet. Thus the love of the troubadours would have been determined by a paradox: to desire the sexual union and to renounce it at the same time. The present study asks the question to what extent this thesis of the paradoxe amoureux may still claim validity considering the (later) insights of the troubadour research about recital, representativeness and performativity. Moreover the imagination of the death of love by fulfillment of love connected with the thesis of the paradoxe amoureux, will be placed in a larger discourse horizon. The middle ages cover a broad range of different views on the possible impacts of a sexual union on a love relationship. At the center of this study is therefore the relation of imputed psychic reality of life, discursive drafts and performative implications.

This study addresses two desiderata of historical emotion research: reflecting on the interdependence of textual functions and the representation of emotions, and acknowledging the interdependence of studies on the premodern and modern periods in the history of emotion. Contemporary research on the history of emotion is characterised by a proliferation of studies on very different eras, authors, themes, texts, and aspects. The enthusiasm and confidence with which situations, actions, and interactions involving emotions in history are discovered, however, has led to overly direct attempts to access the represented objects (emotions/feelings/affects); as a result, too little attention has been paid to the conditions and functions of their representations. That is why this study engages with the emotion research of historians from an unashamedly philological perspective. Such an approach provides, among other things, insights into the varied, often contradictory, observations that can be made about the history of emotion in modernity and premodernity.

Florian Theobald discusses the understanding of the devil in the gospel of John and deals firstly with the representation of the devil in the early Judaic and Christian periods. In the first part ("The history of the representation of the devil from its beginnings to the New Testament") particular attention is paid to the theory of Henry Ansgar Kelly that in the writings of the early Judaic period and of the New Testament, the devil is to be understood not as an adversary but as a functionary of the Divine Government. The work also shows that the role of the devil in the early Judaic and New Testament texts is not clearly defined. He can appear in the same text as both an officer and an adversary of God.The second, main part of the work ("The devil in the Gospel of John") is concerned with the devil's nature and workings and his fall and loss of power in John's Gospel. The author shows how the devil in the fourth gospel is thought of as an objective figure outside of man but at the same time is clearly linked with psychological effects. Three dimensions of his psychological workings are apparent: 1. A cognitive dimension: the devil influences man's consciousness through the power of the lie so that people perceive and judge from worldly standpoints; 2. An ethical dimension: through his cognitive workings, the devil produces in man inappropriate behaviour. People carry out the will of the devil in the belief that they are doing God's will; 3. An emotional dimension: John's devil produces hatred and aggression, fear of death and – in accordance with a common tradition from the early Judaic period – sadness.Thus, the devil in the fourth gospel can be active in the world, even after his fall: after his loss of power on the cosmic level which occurred in the hour of Jesus there is also a need for his power to be destroyed on an anthropological level. This is achieved through the Paraclete and allows the disciples to participate in Jesus' victory over the devil.
