This volume examines the politics of history and memory in Germany today through a review and analysis of seminal developments in the current discourse on 1933 – 1945. An interdisplicinary work, this book examines questions of representing the past from the perspective of literary studies, social psychology, film studies, history, and cultural studies. Themes include transgenerational memory and remembrance, the air war and German literature, commemoration and silences, transnational reconciliation, and historical consciousness in the German present. The collected essays make clear that as the current discourse contributes toward an historically informed, differentiated understanding of individuals’ roles in the Third Reich and World War Two, victim and perpetrator identities cannot be defined as exclusive from one another. The discourse emphasizes personal over collective experience and answers questions of responsibility and guilt on the individual level.

Literary fiction in Germany has long been a medium for contemplation of the 'nation' and questions of national identity. From the mid-1990s, in the wake of heated debates on the future direction of culture, politics and society in a more 'normal', united country, German literature has become increasingly diverse and seemingly disparate - at the one extreme, it represents the attempt to 'reinvent' German traditions, at the other, the unmistakable influence of Anglo-American forms and pop literature. A shared concern of almost all of recent German fiction, however, is the contemporary debate on globalisation, its nature, impact and consequences for 'local culture'. In its engagement with globalisation the literature of the Berlin Republic continues the long-established practice of reflection on what it is to be 'German'. This book investigates literary responses to the phenomenon of globalisation. The subject is approached from a wide range of thematic and theoretical perspectives in twelve chapters which, taken together, also provide an overview of German fiction from the mid-1990s to the present. The book serves both as an introduction to contemporary German literature for university students of German and as a resource for scholars interested in culture and society in the Berlin Republic.

A moving portrait of people in transition - between old and new, life and death. Germans flee the besieged city of Danzig in 1945. Poles driven out of eastern regions by the Russians move into the homes hastily abandoned by their previous inhabitants. In an area of the city graced with beech trees and a stately cathedral, the stories of old and new residents intertwine: Hanemann, a German and a former professor of anatomy, who chooses to stay in Danzig after the mysterious death of his lover; the Polish family of the narrator, driven out of Warsaw; and a young Carpathian woman who no longer has a country, her cheerful nature concealing deep wounds. Through his brilliantly defined characters, stunning evocation of place, and memorable description of remnants of a world that was German but survives in Polish households, Chwin has created a reality that is beyond destruction.

The Second World War brought suffering and trauma to the people of Europe on an unprecedented scale. While Europeans were not strangers to the harsh realities of international conflict, World War II galvanized a new range of destructive forces that shook the continent to its intellectual, psychological and material foundations. This volume addresses World War II as a common European trauma by focusing on key trans-national developments and comparing the different wars as experienced by three similar civilian populations.

The year 2014 marks the 300th anniversary of the death of the great German Baroque sculptor and architect Andreas Schlüter. In commemoration, this second issue of the new serial publication »Schlüteriana: Studies in the Art, Life, and Milieu of Andreas Schlüter«*, written and edited by its author, presents two articles on this brilliant artist’s creations. Schlüter was a master of truly international significance whose work is relatively well-known to scholars and the general public within the borders of Europe’s German-speaking countries but much less so to readers outside them. Yet a great deal of research, cataloguing, and analysis of his art still remains to be accomplished and it is the aim of this and future volumes of »Schlüteriana« to fulfill the task. Featured in this issue are important facets of Schlüter’s output: his drawings and funerary sculpture. Examined here are rare drawings with allegorical/astronomical themes ascribed to his almost non-existent oeuvre of works on paper. Included as well is the first installment of a major, two-part study on the sculptor’s tomb art in Poland and Germany. In »Part One: Poland«, projects from the artist’s earliest years are studied in detail with key examples from contemporary European Baroque sepulchral monuments brought forward as comparisons to highlight their significance for Schlüter’s artwork. The examination continues in the second installment »Part Two: Germany« to be published in »Schlüteriana III«. Both studies shall provide a complete overview – in an essay/catalogue-form – of Andreas Schlüter’s documented and attributed funerary monuments located in these countries. * »Schlüteriana I« first appeared in »Aus Hippocrenes Quell’. Ein Album amicorum kunsthistorischer Beiträge zum 60. Geburtstag von Gerd-Helge Vogel« published by Lukas Verlag in 2011.
