The cultural group associated with the Russian Mennonites was born during the tumultuous period of the Anabaptist Movement in the early 16th century, stemming from the Protestant Reformation in the Lowland countries of western Europe. Viewed on a 21st century map this region encompasses parts of northern France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and parts of the Rhine River basin in western Germany. Foundational political and religious principles evolved as this Mennonite group established its identity: freedom of religion; separation of Church and State; exemption from military service; adult baptism; and disintermediation of the Clergy. The Anabaptist movement posed a serious threat to the Church of Rome and the Holy Roman Empire. Fervent, violent attempts were made to stamp out the movement, driving congregants underground or sweeping them northward as the Inquisition sought out, captured and murdered Anabaptist heretics. The Mennonites fled through the northern territories of the Netherlands and into safer regions, such as the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the city of Danzig, where some religious toleration existed. Danzig became a hub of Mennonite settlement, and other centers emerged, particularly in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, as the community expanded. Until the late 18th century these Mennonites were able to live according to their principles and succeed. In the latter half of the 18th century European political tensions and conflicts led to the partitioning and eventual dissolution of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and some the most important privileges enjoyed by the Mennonites were lost, among them the unfettered right to acquire land and exemption from military service. In the last years of the 18th century Russia, under Catherine the Great, began a program to encourage settlement by foreigners in her vast, western regions. The Mennonite community regarded this as a salvation and carved out a new life on the steppes along the Dneiper River, beginning in the last decade of the 18th century. For nearly a century these Mennonites lived in Russia, able to abide by their principles. However, political encroachment on their systems of education and governance and threats to their deeply held principles caused a new migration, this time to North America. Many Russian Mennonites came to Canada. They arrived in three waves, in the 1870s, 1890s and finally, following the upheaval of World War I, the Russian Revolution and the Ukrainian War of Independence, the 1920s.

This book is the first scholarly publication in English to break the silence of Stutthof, where 120,000 people were interned and at least 65,000 perished. A Nazi Camp Near Danzig offers an overview of Stutthof's history. It also explores Danzig's significance in promoting the cult of German nationalism which led to Stutthof's establishment and which shaped its subsequent development in 1942 into a Concentration Camp, with the full resources of the Nazi Reich. The book shows how Danzig/Gdansk, generally identified as the city where the Second World War started, became under Albert Forster, Hitler's hand-picked Gauleiter, 'the vanguard of Germandom in the east' and with its disputed history, the poster city for the Third Reich. It reflects on the fact that Danzig was close enough to supply Stutthof with both prisoners – initially local Poles and Jews – as well as local men for its SS workforce. Throughout the study, Ruth Schwertfeger draws on the stories of Danziger and Nobel Prize winner, Günter Grass to consider the darker realities of German nationalism that even Grass's vibrant depictions and wit cannot mask. Schwertfeger demonstrates how German nationalism became more lethal for all prisoners, especially after the summer of 1944 when thousands of Jewish woman died in the Stutthof camp system or perished in the 'death marches' after January 1945. Schwertfeger uses archival and literary sources, as well as memoirs, to allow the voices of the victims to speak. Their testimonies are juxtaposed with the justifications of perpetrators. The book successfully argues that, in the end, Stutthof was no less lethal than other camps of the Third Reich, even if it was, and remains, less well-known.

This volume stems from the assumption that broadly-understood borderlands, as well as peripheries, provinces or uttermost ends of different kinds, are abodes of significant culture-generating forces. From the academic point of view, their undeniable appeal lies in the fact that they constitute spaces of mutual interactions and enable new cultural phenomena to surface, grow or decline, and, as such, are worth thorough and constant scrutiny. However, they also provide the setting for radical clashes between ideologies, languages, religions, customs, and, as the media report every single day, armies or guerrilla units. Living within such areas of creative dynamics and destructive friction (or visiting them, even vicariously as the contributors to the volume do) is tantamount to exposing oneself to a difference. One’s response to this difference – either in the form of rejection or, more preferably, acceptance (or a mixture of both) – is not merely an index of one’s tolerance (a platitudinised term itself that all too often hides an attitude of comfortable indifference), but an affirmation of humaneness. Borderlands are paradoxical, if not aporetic, loci. They simultaneously connote territories on either side of a border, in a literal sense, and a vague, intermediate state or region, in a metaphorical sense. Encapsulating the idea of border, the term indicates both inescapable nearness and unavoidable (or perhaps unbridgeable) separateness. The studies included in the volume focus on various aspects of borderland art and literature, on analyses of selected works, and on the peculiarities of cultural and literary representations. Thus, the borderland landscape, both literal and metaphorical, comes to be seen as a factor contributing to the emergence of new, distinct and identifiable themes and motifs, as well as theoretical frameworks.
