English summary: Human beings have always been interested in the phenomenon of death. Since no living person can have any knowledge about death itself, the exchange of information on this subject in all cultures and eras has largely been in pictures, and in particular metaphors. Using the phenomenon of death as an example, Stefanie Ulrike Gulde studies the special possibilities provided by pictorial language in the Old Testament. All the figures which symbolize death, whether as a glutton, an intruder or a robber, a shepherd or a partner in the covenant, have one thing in common: death is always shown as a ruler. As expected, this attribute reflects the helplessness of human beings where death and dying are concerned. Gleichzeitig konzentriert sich die Autorin auf ganz bestimmte bildsprachliche Annaherungen an den Tod, die im Vorderen Alten Orient kursierten und dann auch im Alten Testament zu finden sind. Es ist der Tod als Figur, der motivgeschichtlich betrachtet wird. Diese Figur tritt in zwei unterschiedlichen Traditionen in Erscheinung, was Ruckschlusse auf den Austausch zwischen den agyptischen, mesopotamischen und westsyrischen Kulturkreisen zulasst. Beide Traditionen finden sich erwartungsgemass im Alten Testament wieder. Doch sind dort auch weitere Figuren des Todes erhalten, die keine Parallelen zu Personifikationen aus der Umwelt des Alten Testaments zu haben scheinen. Sie zeugen vom souveranen Umgang der biblischen Autoren mit althergebrachten Motiven und Traditionen. Eine Gemeinsamkeit findet sich dennoch bei den verschiedenen Todesfiguren, sei es als Fresser, Eindringling oder Rauber, Hirte oder Bundespartner: Immer ist der Tod als Herrscher dargestellt. Concepts of voluntary death and martyrdom versus the ideal of preserving human life are an essential component of the Ethics of the Abrahamite religions throughout their history.
