En una época donde las relaciones se suceden con lo vertiginoso de la modernidad y pululan los amores líquidos (al decir de Bauman), ”Todas las cartas de amor son ridículas” reivindica ese ritual laico de las correspondencias amorosas, cada vez más en decadencia, y hace apología a esa lentitud que Kundera reclama para los romances. ”Todas las cartas de amor son ridículas” se construye como una narración paródica de las novelas románticas, pero es al mismo tiempo una disertación moderna sobre el amor aunada a una historia de afectos y a un final de tragedia que pone sobre la mesa temas tabús como el abuso, la cosificación de la mujer y la violencia contemporánea.
