Around the world, familiar ideological conflicts over the market are becoming increasingly territorialized in the form of policy conflicts between national and subnational governments. Thanks to a series of trends like globalization, democratization, and especially decentralization, subnational governments are now in a position to more effectively challenge the ideological orientation of the national government. The book conceptualizes these challenges as operating in two related but distinct modes. The first stems from elected subnational officials who use their authority, resources, and legitimacy to design, implement, and defend subnational policy regimes that deviate ideologically from national policy regimes. The second occurs when these same officials use their authority, resources, and legitimacy to question, oppose, and alter the ideological content of national policy regimes. The book focuses on three similarly-situated countries in Latin America where these two types of policy challenges met different fates; neither challenge succeeded in Peru, both succeeded in Bolivia, and Ecuador experienced an intermediate outcome marked by the success of the first type of challenge (i.e. the defence of a deviant, neoliberal subnational policy regime) and the failure of the second (i.e. the inability to alter a statist national policy regime). Derived from the in-depth study of these countries, the book's theoretical argument emphasizes three critical variables: 1) the structural significance of the territory over which subnational elected officials preside, 2) the level of institutional capacity they can harness, and 3) the strength of the societal coalitions they can build both within and across subnational jurisdictions. Transformations in Governance is a major new academic book series from Oxford University Press. It is designed to accommodate the impressive growth of research in comparative politics, international relations, public policy, federalism, environmental and urban studies concerned with the dispersion of authority from central states up to supranational institutions, down to subnational governments, and side-ways to public-private networks. This is the Histories, volume two, of the Portuguese English Bilingual Bible book series. It is in English and Portuguese, two of the top ten most widely spoken languages on Earth. It is the King James Version and Almeida Recebida translations, good and accurate translations for learning either language, as well as having a correct and reliable translation from the received texts of the Holy Bible itself. The translators relied on "formal equivalence" to preserve phrasing and literal content from the Hebrew and Greek documents. This present volume is divided in columns for each language, with each corresponding verse line matching its equal on the opposite side of the page. The font size and style is easy to read. Typo's and the rare instance of missing information (such as superscriptions above psalms and colophons ending epistles) have been translated from English to Portuguese, and in some cases Hebrew into Portuguese, by Alan Lewis Silva, who has lovingly and carefully edited this wonderful book.

This book is the first written by an insider about the tragic outcome of Argentina's human-rights trials. Jaime Malamud-Goti was one of two advisers asked by President Raul R. Alfonsin to organize the trials. This was not an assignment without risk: Malamud-Goti received constant threats. But did the trials further the cause of democracy - as the prosecutors so fervently had hoped? Even though he was an architect of the proceedings, Malamud-Goti argues that they did not. In fact, he says, they may have contributed to the new mode of authoritarianism and bigotry now rising in Argentina. What most profoundly interests Malamud-Goti is that his nation persists in turning logic on its head: multitudes of Argentineans respond to authoritarianism by playing political and judicial hardball - inciting a response in kind. They are playing a game without end. Game Without End is an honest attempt to express deeply assimilated experience - the effort of a scholar who, while serving as secretary of state, encouraged his compatriots to turn over a new leaf but who, by his own assessment, failed. Returning to Argentina later as a Guggenheim scholar and a MacArthur peace scholar, Malamud-Goti researched much of this book in Buenos Aires, where he interviewed former opponents, a few of them in military prisons. He hopes that other nations, struggling to make the transition from authoritarianism to democracy, can learn from Argentina's experience. Cuando crei y recibi a Cristo, como mi Salvador y Senor, no tenia una comprension clara de como leer la Biblia, o de donde empezar a leerla. Asi que basandome en lo que habia aprendido en este mundo, en la escuela, por ejemplo, empece a leer la Biblia desde el principio, desde el libro del Genesis. Despues de todo, eso es lo que aprendi en la escuela, un libro se empieza a leer desde el principio. Las historias del Antiguo Testamento me fascinaban, eran mejores y mas emocionantes para mi que las ensenanzas y mandamientos de Jesus en el Nuevo Testamento. Lo que no entendia, y lo que no me ensenaron, fue que yo habia creido y recibido a Jesucristo como mi Salvador y Senor. Que ahora era su seguidor, su discipulo, su siervo. Y como su siervo, yo tenia que empezar a leer del Nuevo Testamento primero, para empezar a aprender las ensenanzas, instrucciones y mandamientos de mi Senor, lo que el queria que ahora yo hiciera, y asi, empezar a ser obediente a su palabra. No sabia que tambien era un mandamiento de nuestro Padre Celestial, que nos dice en Hechos 3, 22-23, que debemos empezar a leer del Nuevo Testamento, para poder hacer lo que Jesus ahora nos dice que hagamos. En el Nuevo Testamento, Jesus comienza a ensenarnos, sus nuevas leyes, y lo diferente de las antiguas, las que todavia debemos obedecer y hacer, y las que ya no hacemos. Por ejemplo, la ley del ojo por ojo, o diente por diente, y otras que estan escritas en Mateo 5, 21-47. Otras como la circuncision, el dia septimo, sobre los sacrificios de animales, que clase de animales podemos comer ahora, y muchas mas. Tambien aprendi que otra razon por la que empezamos a leer del Nuevo Testamento, es para podamos entender lo que realmente Dios requiere de nosotros, para convertirnos en verdaderos cristianos, o en unos verdaderos seguidores de Cristo. Para crecer espiritualmente, para desarrollar una relacion intima con Dios, y para estar completamente equipado para servirle. Tambien aprendi que a diferencia del Antiguo Testamento, Dios nos ha dado a cada uno de nosotros, los que ahora seguimos a su hijo Jesus, su Espiritu Santo, para ayudarnos y guiarnos en cada paso de nuestra vida espiritual con Cristo. Y asi poder vivir la vida santa que el ahora quiere que vivamos hasta el final, o hasta que Jesus vuelva.
