The Turkish War of Independence started in May 1919 with the arrival of Ataturk to Samsun. Mazhar Mufit Kansu was close to Ataturk from his arrival to Samsun until his death. This book covers the period from May 1919 to September 1919. In this period, we learn about the events that passed at the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence and the financial difficulties through Mazhar Mufit Kansu's interpretation. Mazhar Mufit Kansu published these memories in the newspaper “Son Telgraf” (“Last Telegram”) in 1948. It was decided by the Turkish Historical Society to convert these articles into a book in 1963. In 2020, the first volume of the book was translated into English by Ataturk Research Center CT. Firstly, Ottoman Turkish texts, which appear mostly in the original Turkish copy, were translated into today's Turkish by a group of freelancers. Words, the meanings of which could not be found, were left unchanged; some of the Ottoman texts that require professional translation could not be translated into today's Turkish, and could not be added to this book. In addition, the Hijri calendar was converted into the Gregorian calendar, and the city names used in the Ottoman Turkish language were translated into today's language. The translation was made with an amateur spirit, and loyal to the original text as much as possible. British–Turkish relations were transformed in the first half of the 20th century, from a state of belligerence during the First World War, through a period of heated confrontation over the fate of Mosul and trade and business access to the new Republic of Turkey, to rapprochement and financial cooperation in the 1930s, and finally a formal military alliance under the auspices of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. The edited collection provides a selection of important chapters by senior and early-career scholars from Britain, Turkey, and the wider world. The chapters use new sources to address issues as diverse as the Turkey–Iraq frontier, colonial governance in Cyprus, the legal rights of foreigners in Istanbul, commercial relations through the era of the Great Depression, contested neutrality in the Second World War, and the search for new alliances in the Cold War. Knowledge of this tumultuous transition and its impact on public memory is key to understanding points of tension and cohesion in present-day UK-Turkey relations. Nearly all of the previous scholarship on Turkey and U.S. relations cover the Cold War period as well as current affairs with regard to security, strategy, and defense. Hence, the literature abounds with military orientation. This edited volume builds on a historical perspective and focuses on foreign relations, diplomacy, actors, mutual perceptions and reciprocity in diplomatic relations within the framework of the world conjuncture in the 1920s and 1930s. Relations with the U.S.A. have served as a balance in Turkey's Euro-Atlantic policy long before NATO was established. Likewise, re-building relations with the Republic of Turkey served U.S. interests in opening to the Near East and thus breaking away from its much lauded isolationist policy between the two world wars.
