La palabra tolerancia ha tenido y sigue teniendo mala prensa en nuestro país. Más que una virtud ha sido valorada tradicionalmente como flaqueza. Históricamente, ha primado en España el discurso de la intolerancia, ligado casi siempre al de la Inquisición. Y, desde luego, desde más allá de nuestras fronteras se ha juzgado permanentemente a los españoles como presuntos sujetos agentes y pacientes de una historia de intolerancia y represión. En este libro se demuestra que el término tolerancia es polisémico. Al lado del clásico sentido de libertad de conciencia, en el concepto tolerancia inciden otras acepciones: la indulgencia o gracia que es el comportamiento elusivo de un superior respecto al castigo merecido por un inferior, la apuesta por el mal menor con sentido pragmático (se es tolerante en tanto que se carece de fuerza para ser intolerante), el escepticismo relativista, la duda y confusión popular producto de la ignorancia, la estrategia de disimulación y evasión de compromiso.
