Das Buch ist für Kinder und Jugendliche gedacht und eigentlich gewaltfrei, auch wenn es manchmal furchteinflößend und beängstigend zugeht. Die Familie steht im Vordergrund, sie halten zusammen und kämpfen gemeinsam. Es gibt feinsinnige, spannende, romantische und witzige Passagen. Auch Erwachsene dürfen sich von dem Buch angesprochen fühlen. Das Buch ist in 12 Kapitel aufgeteilt, die jeweils einem Monat entsprechen, es spielt also von Januar bis Dezember und hat 412 Seiten.

Müller's analysis of inflection and derivation is compatible with syntactical analysis of particle verbs; as a byproduct, it also solves the particle verb bracketing paradox often discussed in the literature.
