En el pueblo vive un chico, sin un céntimo, solo en una casa de su abuela que está rehabilitando. El chico es hijo de funcionarios y tiene otro hermano que vive en Logroño. Esperan que muera su abuela, mujer de pasado tormentoso que él descubre en la playa; quieren heredar de una puta vez, como dicen. Ella y el chico empiezan a salir y a acostarse en una relación tranquila. Durante todo el tiempo ella cree que el marido va a venir a matarla. Cuando llegan las Fallas, van a Valencia y en una mascletá que los ha engullido aparece el marido. El final es totalmente sorprendente e inesperado. Todos los capítulos de la novela están encabezados con reflexiones de Quevedo, versos sobre «la rueda de la Fortuna». Novela de género negro.
