We’ve completely misunderstood the purpose of the pyramids. They weren’t built primarily as tombs, instead they were intended to be used by Pharaoh while he was still alive. In very ancient times, the king was only allowed to rule for 30 years––then he’d be ritually killed! They didn’t want an old man in charge. One day, a Pharaoh was nearing his 30th year and decided he didn’t want to die, so came up with a set of rituals that would enable him to live on. It was called ‘Heb Sed’. This sacred ceremony was more than just a life-saver though, it also enabled the king to merge with the Sun-god. After death, Egyptian kings were believed to board the Sun-boat where they would shine down on their subjects for all eternity. However, many things could go awry in this process, particularly under the eyes of a successor. What if they bungled the funeral? What if they were a rival? Heb Sed enabled all this to occur while the king was still alive so that he could preside over proceedings, ensuring its success. And the bonus of being able to do this while alive is that some part of the Pharaoh would board the Sun-boat and in doing so, the king would become a divinity––the Pharaoh became a living God-king! But all this could only happen if they built a strange, pyramid-shaped structure to enable this potent magic to take place. So they built pyramids. And they got bigger and more magnificent with the passing of each King. This madness came to a head with Pharaoh Snefru who built two massive pyramids; the two biggest man-made structures in the World! How do you outdo this? While his son ‘Khufu’ only managed to build one pyramid, it was the most impressive structure ever built by humans. Still is, in my book. And yes, it might have functioned as his tomb, although Strabo and Diodorus swear black and blue that it wasn’t, however, it was entirely geared to the Sun-god, as you will find out... it was entirely geared for the King's Heb Sed. This book is the sequel to Architecture of Ra, but can be read independently of it. It also delves into the myths of Egypt as well as those of other cultures (Jason & the Argonauts, Icarus, Jonah, Thor, Hercules…). I don’t like calling these stories 'myths' because they actually belonged to living religions and to make that grade, the stories had to include information seminal to that culture. And if the texts contain this knowledge, then so did their religious buildings. The knowledge encoded in Egyptian legends is also encoded in their pyramids!

First Published in 1998. This volume brings together for the first time in a single volume the highly significant works on ancient Egyptian religion by Aylward Manley Blackman (1883-1956). Blackman's knowledge of Egyptian religion was unrivalled. He was best known for his series of studies on Egyptian religion which have long been regarded as essential reading in the subject, and which forms the content of the present collection. Unusually, Blackman did not publish his writings in book form, but preferred to place them in a wide range of publications that are extremely difficult to obtain. Blackman's studies on Egyptian religious belief and particularly religious practice focus on areas of fundamental concern and are models of meticulous, sympathetic and penetrating scholarship. They should remain required reading for all students of Egyptian religion well into the next century. All those with an interest in the subject should welcome this volume which makes Blackman's writings accessible in a convenient form. A select bibliography provides an update and key to more recent work on topics discussed by Blackman.

Discover The Gods and Myths of Egyptian Mythology Most fascinating about the ancient Egyptians is that they were natural-born storytellers, which shows not only in their myths and gods, but also in how they lived their lives. They invented a unique writing system unique containing over 1,000 signs, including ideograms and phonograms, but that isn't all. The ancient Egyptians managed to fill the walls of their temples, palaces, tombs, obelisks, and even houses with their history, their stories, and the details of how they lived. They immortalized their history on stone, papyrus, and clay.

Nothing really dies if it's remembered, his wife had told him. In the dying village of Al Tarfuk, lost among the war-stained dunes of eastern Libya, professor Norman Haas learns the location of the tomb that had been his wife's life pursuit. The final resting place of Kiya, the lost queen of Akhenaten, whose history had been etched from the stone analogues of history for her heresies against the long absent pantheon of Egyptian gods. He never expected to discover that the tomb was the final resting place to more than the dead. And as his team of researchers find themselves trapped inside the ancient tomb, Norman realizes all too soon that his wife was right- Nothing really dies if it's remembered... But some things are best forgotten. Dan Franklin's debut supernatural thriller is a tale of grief, of loneliness, and of an ageless, hungry fury that waits with ready tooth and claw beneath the sand. "This neat little book, Franklin's debut, is much fresher than its B-movie premise might suggest. Franklin is a horror writer to watch." - Publishers Weekly "Franklin's slowly advancing sense of dread, claustrophobia and menace in "The Eater of the Gods" is calibrated with a bomb maker's precision, and the atmospheric descriptions are stunningly done." - The Day Dan Franklin wrote his first attempt at a horror novel when he was seven. It was terrible. He has, since, improved. The winner of several local awards for short stories and an occasional poem, Dan Franklin lives in Maryland with his extremely understanding wife, his cosmically radiant daughter, and a socially crippling obsession with things that creep. The Eater of Gods is his first published novel. He can be contacted at DanFranklinAuthor.com
