Swing has never gone out of style. It was the music the Greatest Generation danced to--and went to war to. And no musician evokes the Big Band era more strikingly than Tommy Dorsey, whose soaring trombone play and hit tunes influenced popular music for a generation. Tommy Dorsey (1905-1956) led a rich and complex life. Beginning with his childhood in the coal mining towns of Pennsylvania, we follow the young trombonist's journey to fame and fortune during the Jazz Age. Tommy, with his brother Jimmy, created one of the most popular bands of the era and played with such giants as Bing Crosby and Glenn Miller. They also launched the career of a skinny young singer named Frank Sinatra. But Tommy's volcanic personality eventually split the band and Tommy went off on his own. Drawing on exhaustive new research and scores of interviews with the musicians who knew him best, Levinson delves into Dorsey's famously eccentric lifestyle and his oversize appetite for drink, women, and perfection. The first biography on Dorsey in more than thirty years, Tommy Dorsey is a dazzling portrait of the Big Band's brightest star--his tumultuous life, his turbulent times, and the unforgettable music that made him a legend.

A Manchester lad's life in the early twentieth century - the slums, Smithfield market and the search for love... Billy Hopkins bases his engaging novel, Tommy's World, on the fascinating and inspiring life of his father Tommy, born in a Manchester slum in 1886. Perfect for fans of Lindsey Hutchinson and Maureen Lee. 'The characters will stay with you after you've finished the book, but what you won't be left with is the sickly sweet taste of nostalgia. If you like to learn something from a good story then this could well be the book for you' - The Bookbag Tommy Hopkins' early years aren't very promising. Born at the end of the nineteenth century in a slum district of Manchester, he's blessed with a loving, hard-working mam and dad, but they don't have two ha'pennies to rub together. The family is struck by tragedy not once but twice - but Tommy is a survivor. He quickly makes friends at school, and together they plot money-making schemes, settle scores and play lots of football. Then, at last, it's time to leave the playground behind. Denied the chance of a promising career as an engineer, Tommy finds employment at Manchester's Smithfield market and works his way up, finally becoming a porter. He's turning into a man, and amongst the young women who catch his eye is Kate Lally, who may just be the love of his life... What readers are saying about Tommy's World: 'Well written and the characters are just so great... you enter a different world when you read a Billy Hopkins book' 'Brilliant author, his books are really ones that you can't put down!' 'Tommy's World was superb. Fascinating detail about life as it was. Unputdownable'

Birmingham-born Tommy Adderley was a working-class lad who started singing in New Zealand in the late 1950s when he was still in the Merchant Navy. By the early 1970s he was one of the owners of Granpa's (entertainers' club) in Auckland. Overseas musicians considered him to be the main man in the parish and all the greats including Keith Richards and John Mayall visited the club when they were in town. Those were the halcyon days. After a well-publicized drug bust and nineteen months in jail, Tommy devoted all his waking hours to music: as a jazz singer, event organiser and promoter. He performed to the end, and died, in abject poverty in February 1993 less than twenty-four hours after his last performance. "A highly personal account of a thoroughly personable man. This work rightly acknowledges Tommy Adderley's broader contribution to the New Zealand entertainment industry.... Christine...provides angular glimpses into a life as filled with generosity as it was fraught with personal challenges." Richard Thorne, New Zealand Musician Magazine.

In the merciless deserts of Barrenwest, a realm where the wild west meets the whimsy of high fantasy, we follow Tommy White, a reluctant drifter thrown into a world he had only dared to explore in books. For years, Tommy was confined to the northern town of Fruming, oblivious to the thrills and terrors beyond his sheltered life. But when circumstances propel him into the heart of Barrenwest, Tommy is thrust into a maelstrom of fate that could determine the destiny of the entire continent. In his journey, Tommy stumbles upon a diamond, an artifact of untold power that mysteriously resonates with him. Unbeknownst to Tommy, this gem is far more than a shiny trinket; it's the key to the looming war and harbinger of potential calamity. As he ventures deeper into the unforgiving desert, he uncovers the inexplicable allure of the diamond and its true nature. In his extraordinary journey, Tommy confronts cowboys armed with magical bullets, battles ghastly vampires, abnormal critters, and an array of mystical creatures unique to Barrenwest. Some of these beings are formidable foes, while others prove to be unexpected allies, aiding him in surviving the ruthless desert and facing his deepest fears. "Battle For Barrenwest – The Black Sun" offers a unique blend of classic Western and Fantasy genres. Its narrative delves into epic battles, explores profound perspectives on the dichotomy of good and evil, and blurs the lines between heroism and villainy. Behind the human conflicts and amidst the tangible terrors, a deeper, more sinister evil lurks in the shadows, threatening to pounce from the unknown.
