"A powerful polemic against agricultural technology." —Nature A major new book that shows the world already has the tools to feed itself, without expanding industrial agriculture or adopting genetically modified seeds, from the Small Planet Institute expert Few challenges are more daunting than feeding a global population projected to reach 9.7 billion in 2050—at a time when climate change is making it increasingly difficult to successfully grow crops. In response, corporate and philanthropic leaders have called for major investments in industrial agriculture, including genetically modified seed technologies. Reporting from Africa, Mexico, India, and the United States, Timothy A. Wise's Eating Tomorrow discovers how in country after country agribusiness and its well-heeled philanthropic promoters have hijacked food policies to feed corporate interests. Most of the world, Wise reveals, is fed by hundreds of millions of small-scale farmers, people with few resources and simple tools but a keen understanding of what and how to grow food. These same farmers—who already grow more than 70 percent of the food eaten in developing countries—can show the way forward as the world warms and population increases. Wise takes readers to remote villages to see how farmers are rebuilding soils with ecologically sound practices and nourishing a diversity of native crops without chemicals or imported seeds. They are growing more and healthier food; in the process, they are not just victims in the climate drama but protagonists who have much to teach us all.

'All Ian Broudie's great gifts as a songwriter - melody, vulnerability, empathy, hope - turn out to be in his prose too. A lovely read' - DAVID BADDIEL 'Full of heart and sparkling melancholy' - THE I 'One of the greatest rock 'n' roll stories of the past fifty years recounted with warmth and wisdom' - HOT PRESS Few musicians have lived a musical life as rich as the songwriter and producer Ian Broudie. From recording the glorious uplifting psychedelic pop of his band the Lightning Seeds to producing bands like Echo & the Bunnymen and the Fall, Ian has journeyed from the energy and potential of the 1970s punk scene to the madness of '90s indie - and out the other side. Throughout nearly fifty years of making music, he has had a front-row seat working with generations of fantastic musicians in the creation of countless groundbreaking records. In Tomorrow's Here Today, he reveals what he has learnt about creativity, how to work with musicians touched by genius and what it is like to stumble through an exploding industry without losing sight of your dreams. Along the way, Ian shares how he wrote the million-selling album Jollification and how - along with the comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner - he wrote and recorded the only single in chart history to reach number one in the UK on four separate occasions. 'Three Lions' has since become the undisputed unofficial anthem of English football, soundtracking heartbreaking defeats as well as the wondrous victories of the Lionesses. Following 2022's long-awaited Lightning Seeds comeback, Ian reflects on a life of cosmic adventures spent in thrall to the power of music.

Excerpt from Tomorrow Is Already Here The author of this book has lived a life symbolic of our times. He was nineteen, a Jewish student in Berlin, when Hitler came to power. His father was a writer. His friends and relatives felt strong in their old-fashioned German liberalism. The day after the Reichstag fire, Robert Jungk was arrested for anti-Nazi activities. Released (because of good fortune and good friends), he went to Paris to study at the Sorbonne. Two years later, although deprived of his German nationality and of all status, he returned to the Reich illegally to work for a subversive press service. Within fourteen months he had to flee again, this time to Czechoslovakia, where he founded another anti-Nazi agency. When Prague fell in 1939, he transferred his activities to Paris. When Paris fell in 1940, he transferred them to Switzerland. Here again he was arrested and jailed, in 1943, because his anti-Nazi writings were too strong for neutral nerves. He was soon released through the good offices of a powerful American friend, and in 1944 and 1945 he was Central European correspondent for the London Observer. Meanwhile, he completed his much-disturbed education, taking his degree at Zurich with a thesis on the resistance of the Swiss press to the censorship of Metternich. In 1945 he was back in Germany - East as well as West. In 1946 he spent three months in the United States; then he returned to eastern Europe to report for the Swiss press on Yugoslavia and Hungary. In September, 1947 he came back to America as correspondent for the same Swiss papers. Here he remained, except for a few months, until 1953. Old buildings in our midst call to the imagination, evoking a time just out of reach. Each structure in Here Tomorrow holds a story of California's rich past in its wainscoting, adobe brick, or Art Deco chandelier. The Temple of Kwan Tai on the fog-wreathed Mendocino coast contains the history of a once-vibrant seaside Chinatown. A garden of honeysuckle, roses, and tulips once tended by prisoners flourishes on the dry and windy island of Alcatraz. Colorful mosaics, glasswork zodiacs, and historic murals grace the walls of the Los Angeles Public Library, a structure conceived as a great melding of cultures and lore that reflect the diverse spirit of California. Such structures represent a significant cultural legacy, and as they deteriorate with age and the world around them changes, they also represent a significant economic and cultural challenge. For thirty years, the California Preservation Foundation has bestowed design awards on those who have excelled in restoration and creative reuse. From these awards, the Heyday editorial team selected fifty sites we feel best represent the multifaceted and complex art of restoration. They represent California in all its variety, its culture and commerce, geography, history, and creative style.

The moments of greatest change can also be the moments of greatest opportunity. Adapt more quickly and use the power of change to your advantage with this guide from the editor in chief of Entrepreneur magazine and host of the Build for Tomorrow podcast. We experience change in four phases. The first is panic. Then we adapt. Then we find a new normal. And then, finally, we reach the phase we could not have imagined in the beginning, the moment when we realize that we wouldn't go back. Build for Tomorrow is designed to accelerate that process - to help you lessen your panic, adapt faster, define the new normal, and thrive going forward. And it arrives as we all, in some way, have felt a shift in our lives. The pandemic forced a moment of collective change, and we are still being forced to make new plans and adjustments to our lives, families, and careers. Many of us will never go back, continuing to work from home, demanding higher wages, or starting new businesses. To help people along this journey, Entrepreneur magazine editor in chief Jason Feifer offers stories, lessons, and concrete exercises from the most potent sources of change in our world. He speaks to the world's most successful changemakers - from global celebrities like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Maria Sharapova to innovative CEOs and Main Street heroes - to learn how they decide what to protect, what to discard, and how to move forward without fear. He also draws lessons from history, looking at how massive changes across time can help us better understand the opportunities of today. For example, he finds guidance for our post-pandemic realities inside the power shifts that occurred after the Bubonic Plague, and he reveals how the history of innovations like the elevator and even the teddy bear can teach anyone to be more forward-thinking. We cannot anticipate tomorrow's needs, but it shouldn't take a crisis to push us forward. This book will show you how to make change on your own terms.
