In Motherless Tongues, Vicente L. Rafael examines the vexed relationship between language and history gleaned from the workings of translation in the Philippines, the United States, and beyond. Moving across a range of colonial and postcolonial settings, he demonstrates translation's agency in the making and understanding of events. These include nationalist efforts to vernacularize politics, U.S. projects to weaponize languages in wartime, and autobiographical attempts by area studies scholars to translate the otherness of their lives amid the Cold War. In all cases, translation is at war with itself, generating divergent effects. It deploys as well as distorts American English in counterinsurgency and colonial education, for example, just as it re-articulates European notions of sovereignty among Filipino revolutionaries in the nineteenth century and spurs the circulation of text messages in a civilian-driven coup in the twenty-first. Along the way, Rafael delineates the untranslatable that inheres in every act of translation, asking about the politics and ethics of uneven linguistic and semiotic exchanges. Mapping those moments where translation and historical imagination give rise to one another, Motherless Tongues shows how translation, in unleashing the insurgency of language, simultaneously sustains and subverts regimes of knowledge and relations of power.

Few cities in the world have as many professional football clubs as London and none have the history explored in this book by journalist and broadcaster Steve Tongue. It was in the English capital that the Football Association - the first of its kind anywhere - was founded in 1863 and that the FA Cup, the world's most famous domestic cup competition, was born. After the North and Midlands dominated the first forty-odd years of league football, three clubs in particular - Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea - began to challenge them and eventually succeeded, joining West Ham United as trophy winners not only at home but in Europe. Between those four clubs, and more than a dozen other professional clubs past and present, grew the turf wars that are the bedrock of the great rivalries and derbies across England's most vibrant football city. Turf Wars tells the story of football in the capital.

Rejecting Offense, Strife, and Unforgiveness: Rediscovering the Use of the Tongue speaks the plain truth about the great power that the tonguethe words spoken in the midst of relationshipshas to bring pain by opening up wounds. On the other hand, when Christians rediscover the guidance of the Holy Spirit and then redirect the intentions of their words, they can use the tongue for upbuilding one another, seeking peace, and offering forgiveness. The author, Samuel Kioko Kiema, draws upon his own experiences of coming to faith in Jesus Christ and of following the Spirits calling to minister as a missionary, teacher, and scholar to guide his exploration of the misuses and uses of the tongue in families, communities, ministries, and businesses. Rejecting Offense, Strife, and Unforgiveness, drawing upon a wealth of passages from the Scriptures and offering seasoned and wise teachings rooted in those passages, presents an approachable and understandable examination of the insidious power of the tongue to bring about pain. It pairs that portrait with words of encouragement, explaining how the Spirit can guide the use of the tongue for good. Whether you have experience with speaking words that have injured others or with hearing words that have caused you pain, Rejecting Offense, Strife, and Unforgiveness: Rediscovering the Use of the Tongue can offer you the consolation of discovering a path to encouragement, harmony, and reconciliation.

The Unruly Tongue In Early Modern England written by Nathalie Vienne-Guerrin and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

The Unruly Tongue in Early Modern England is a scholarly edition of three early modern treatises on the unruly tongue: Jean de Marconville, A Treatise of the Good and Evell Tounge (ca.1592), William Perkins, A Direction for the Government of the Tongue according to Gods worde (1595), and George Webbe, The Araignement of an unruly Tongue (1619). "The tongue can no man tame" says the Bible (James 3:8), and yet these texts try to tame the tongues of men and tell them how they should rule this little but essential organ and avoid swearing, blaspheming, cursing, lying, flattering, railing, slandering, quarrelling, babbling, jesting, or mocking. This volume excavates the biblical and classical sources in which these early modern texts are embedded and gives a panorama of the sins of the tongue that the Elizabethan society both cultivates and strives to contain. Vienne-Guerrin provides the reader with early modern images of what Erasmus described as a "slippery" and "ambivalent" organ that is both sweet and sour, a source of life and death.
