‘There are moments in life that are pure, and which seem to hang in the air, unhitched from the everyday world as we know it. Suspended for a few seconds, they float in their own space and time with their own hidden prospects. For want of a better term, we call these moments “magical” and when we remember them they are cloaked in a halo of special meaning.’ For 14-year-old Johnny Clegg, hearing Zulu street music as plucked on the strings of a guitar by Charlie Mzila one evening outside a corner café in Bellevue, Johannesburg, was one such ‘magical’ moment. The success story of Juluka and later Savuka, and the cross-cultural celebration of music, language, story, dance and song that stirred the hearts of millions across the world, is well documented. Their music was the soundtrack to many South Africans’ lives during the turbulent 70s and 80s as the country moved from legislated oppression to democratic freedom. It crossed borders, boundaries and generations, resonating around the world and back again. Less known is the story of how it all began and developed. Scatterling of Africa is that origin story, as Johnny Clegg wrote it and wanted it told. It is the story of how the son of an unconventional mother, grandson of Jewish immigrants, came to realise that identity can be a choice, and home is a place you leave and return to as surely as the seasons change.

Rooted in Jamaican folklore and African mythology, Providence Pond by novelist Beresford McLean is a remarkable tale depicting British attempts to influence ancient African customs in the process of reshaping Providence, Jamaica. Engaging the reader with its exceptionally well written and quite unique perspective, Providence Pond draws upon the communal Jamaican lifestyle centered in the African mores of Kumina wisdom and the everyday experiences of the Jamaican natives as their family concepts of love, truth, and hope are all threatened by the largely British-dominant society. Highly entertaining, Providence Pond is very strongly recommended reading and a welcome addition to any community library fiction collection. Bitter conflict and raw excitement abound as deep religious and political fervor divide and set ablaze the Caribbean community of Providence Pond, a former British slave holding in the futile valleys of western St. Mary, Jamaica. As this community struggles for life and definition following the passing of slavery, the imperative - which native religion, political ideology, or vestige of British thinking will prevail to lead the nascent community - must be resolved. During slavery the answer was clear: British thought must prevail. The eventual collapse of the strong, central British control gave rise to African traditions that were long kept semi-dormant in the distant backlands of huge slave plantation. Various factions - African, Indian, and British - vie for social and political dominance. The momentous events of Providence Pond are staged above the backdrop of the still larger conflict of World War 1. In Providence Pond there is first a triangular grouping derived from remnants of Ashanti, Congo and, British elements locked in the struggle to define the "only way." As the country forges along and the conflict in Providence Pond escalates, Congo King the leader of the forbidden Kumina sect, finds himself pitted in impending battle against the ad hoc Ashanti-Christian coalition - lead by the Anglican Reverend, Bernard Watkins. The torch is set! McLean's Providence Pond is a tale of wisdom and deep socio-political insight. It offers a fresh opportunity - yet another way of looking at our own modern conditions: to reevaluate past credence and prejudices - and finding new ways of courageously living old concepts.

The majority of scholarly conceptions of the Mediterranean focus on the sea’s northern shores, with its historical epicentres of Spain, France or Italy. This book seeks to demonstrate the importance of economic, political and cultural networks emanating from the Mediterranean’s lesser-studied southern shores. The various chapters emphasize the activities that made connections between the southern shores, sub-Saharan Africa, the lands along its northern shores, and beyond to the United States. In doing so, the book avoids a Eurocentric approach and details the importance of the players and regions of the southern hinterland, in the analysis of the Mediterranean space. The cultural aspects of the North African countries, be they music, literature, film, commerce or political activism, continue to transform the public spheres of the countries along the northern shores of the Mediterranean, and beyond to the whole of the European continent. In its focus on the often overlooked North African shore, the work is an innovative contribution to the historiography of the Mediterranean region. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of North African Studies.

Our philosophies and perils of wisdom related to our lifetime highlights will be shared with the reader in the pages ahead. I, S.L. Sharp, will adorn the chapters with poetry and song lyrics to enhance our philosophies in our book entitled GAZING INTO OUR CRYSTAL BALL. W.R. Sharp, through his written essays, stories and philosophies, will try to give you a glimpse of his many travels, highlights of his science career and stories of his moments with his loved ones which will provide our readers insight into his in-depth knowledge. And hopefully, the stories and expressions of feelings through the reading of my poetry and lyrics, will bring happiness and awareness of beauty to our readership. As my co-author, my brother, W.R. Sharp, wrote in one of his essays, "Welcome to the Eighty-Teens". He too was welcomed to this age by cataracts and dental complications. However, he felt that these golden years should be celebrated as we gaze into our own crystal ball of life. He thinks life is a journey, and it is always spinning as if encapsuled in a fortune-telling crystal ball. It encounters multiple experiences, opportunities, transitions, challenges and obstacles as we march through time toward our afterlife. Nevertheless, life can be quite fulfilling and coming of age is a continuous process facing all of us who live a long life. In this ball, the most important transformations involve coming of age in its earlier stages in one's education, career pathway, partnerships, parenting or mentoring skills of others, post careers, retirement and facing our afterlife. The latter changeover is especially challenging for those without partners and children unless in the crystal ball of life they prospered from self-love and independence. Fortunately, the existence of public and private retirement facilities will accommodate some of these retirees. The two of us have always imagined the existence of an afterlife metaverse as we march forward in our lives. Optimistically, we both hope to be able to learn lessons in the spinning ball from our present lives and accomplishments and in our next life, accomplish all of our unaccomplished earthly goals. Maybe if you, the reader, gaze closer at your own life's crystal ball, you will see that your life turns out the way it was meant to be whether it is happy or sad. Who knows! The magic of it all is that you were able to live on this earth for just a blink of an eye no matter what your real life's experiences were on this life-altering planet. And on the day when you finally transition into the mysterious afterlife, a new window of opportunities will unfold for you to explore that will be overwhelming to you. At that time, you will have the freedom to embrace new possibilities for yourself that were not accessible to you during your existence on this Earth.

“It’s just a move,” her father said. Her mother shrugged. Sarah cried. Fourteen and her dream country club life shattered. It’s not just a move, it’s a move to a farm with fields and animals and miles of dusty roads between farmhouses. She isn’t even part of a town. Neither is her mother. These two lives move in parallel as each negotiates change within the confines of the 1950s Midwest mores. A perfect family: executive father, trophy wife, two daughters until this move rips the scabs off the marriage and fractures the family structure. “Readers will be swept away by FRACTURED, a timeless coming-of-age novel with an unforgettable heroine. Set in the 1950s, the novel evokes a more innocent time, but Sandra Windsor has a few plot twists up her sleeve that show the darkness hiding behind even the most perfect-seeming family. Windsor is a masterful storyteller with remarkable insight into the human condition. This novel is full of heart.”
