1 Jean Claude Derniame Software process technology is an emerging and strategic area that has already reached a reasonable degree of maturity, delivering products and significant industrial expe riences. This technology aims at supporting the software production process by pro viding the means to model, analyse, improve, measure, and whenever it is reasonable and convenient, to automate software production activities. In recent years, this tech nology has proved to be effective in the support of many business activities not directly related to software production, but relying heavily on the concept of process (i. e. all the applications traditionally associated with workflow management). This book concentrates on the core technology of software processes, its principles and concepts as well as the technical aspect of software process support. The contributions to this book are the collective work of the Promoter 2 European Working Group. This grouping of 13 academic and 3 industrial partners is the suc cessor of Promoter, a working group responsible for creating a European software process community. Promoter 2 aims at exploiting this emerging community to collec tively develop remaining open issues, to coordinate activities and to assist in the dis semination of results. The title “Software Process Modelling and Technology” [Fink94] was produced during Promoter 1. Being “project based”, it presented the main findings and proposals of the different projects then being undertaken by the partners.

Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) and Message Passing Interface (MPI) are the most frequently used tools for programming according to the message passing paradigm, which is considered one of the best ways to develop parallel appli- tions. This volume comprises 50 revised contributions presented at the Eighth - ropean PVM/MPI Users’ Group Meeting, which was held on Santorini (Thera), Greece,23–26September2001.TheconferencewasorganizedbytheDepartment of Informatics and Telecommunications, University of Athens, Greece. This conference has been previously held in Balatofured, ̈ Hungary (2000), Barcelona, Spain (1999), Liverpool, UK (1998), and Krakow, Poland (1997). The ?rst three conferences were devoted to PVM and were held at the TU Munich, Germany (1996), the ENS Lyon, France (1995), and the University of Rome (1994). This conference has become a forum for users and developers of PVM, MPI, and other message passing environments. Interaction between these groups has proved to be very useful for developing new ideas in parallel computing and for applying some of those already existent to new practical ?elds. These post-proceedings contain the revised versions of the papers presented at the \Symposium on Objects and Databases" which was held in Sophia-Antipolis, France, June 13, 2000, in conjunction with the Fourteenth European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming, ECOOP 2000. This event continued the t- dition established the year before in Lisbon (Portugal) with the First Workshop on Object-Oriented Databases. The goal of the symposium was to bring together researchers working in various corners of the eld of objects and databases, to discuss the current state of research in the eld and to critically evaluate existing solutions in terms of their current usage, their successes and limitations, and their potential for new applications. The organizing committee received 21 papers which were reviewed by a p- gram committee of people active in the eld of objects and databases. There were 3 reviews for each paper, and nally the organizing committee selected 9 long papers, 2 short papers, and a demonstration to be presented and discussed at the symposium. The selected papers cover a wide spectrum of topics, including data modeling concepts, persistent object languages, consistency and integrity of persistent data, storage structures, class versioning and schema evolution, query languages, and temporal object-oriented databases. In addition to the regular papers, the symposium included an invited p- sentation, given by Prof. Malcolm Atkinson from the University of Glasgow (Scotland) where he heads the Persistence and Distribution Group.
