The m-adic topologies and, in particular the notions of m-complete ring and m-completion A of a commutative ring A, occur frequently in commutative algebra and are also a useful tool in algebraic geometry. The aim of this work is to collect together some criteria concerning the ascent (from A to A) and the descent (from A to A) of several properties of commutative rings such as, for example: integrity, regularity, factoriality, normality, etc. More precisely, we want to show that many of the above criteria, although not trivial at all, are elementary consequences of some fundamental notions of commutative algebra and local algebra. Sometimes we are able to get only partial results, which probably can be improved by further deeper investigations. No new result has been included in this work. Its only origi nality is the choice of material and the mode of presentation. The comprehension of the most important statements included in this book needs only a very elementary background in algebra, ideal theory and general topology. In order to emphasize the elementary character of our treatment, we have recalled several well known definitions and, sometimes, even the proofs of the first properties which follow directly from them. On the other hand, we did not insert in this work some important results, such as the Cohen structure theorem on complete noetherian local rings, as we did not want to get away too much from the spirit of the book.

Topological Rings written by S. Warner and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-07-07 with Mathematics categories.

This text brings the reader to the frontiers of current research in topological rings. The exercises illustrate many results and theorems while a comprehensive bibliography is also included. The book is aimed at those readers acquainted with some very basic point-set topology and algebra, as normally presented in semester courses at the beginning graduate level or even at the advanced undergraduate level. Familiarity with Hausdorff, metric, compact and locally compact spaces and basic properties of continuous functions, also with groups, rings, fields, vector spaces and modules, and with Zorn's Lemma, is also expected.

By definition, an indefinite inner product space is a real or complex vector space together with a symmetric (in the complex case: hermi tian) bilinear form prescribed on it so that the corresponding quadratic form assumes both positive and negative values. The most important special case arises when a Hilbert space is considered as an orthogonal direct sum of two subspaces, one equipped with the original inner prod uct, and the other with -1 times the original inner product. The subject first appeared thirty years ago in a paper of Dirac [1] on quantum field theory (d. also Pauli [lJ). Soon afterwards, Pontrja gin [1] gave the first mathematical treatment of an indefinite inner prod uct space. Pontrjagin was unaware of the investigations of Dirac and Pauli; on the other hand, he was inspired by a work of Sobolev [lJ, unpublished up to 1960, concerning a problem of mechanics. The attempts of Dirac and Pauli to apply the concept and elemen tary properties of indefinite inner product spaces to field theory have been renewed by several authors. At present it is not easy to judge which of their results will contribute to the final form of this part of physics. The following list of references should serve as a guide to the extensive literature: Bleuler [1], Gupta [lJ, Kallen and Pauli [lJ, Heisen berg [lJ-[4J, Bogoljubov, Medvedev and Polivanov [lJ, K.L. Nagy [lJ-[3], Berezin [lJ, Arons, Han and Sudarshan [1], Lee and Wick [1J.

Integration in function spaces arose in probability theory when a gen eral theory of random processes was constructed. Here credit is cer tainly due to N. Wiener, who constructed a measure in function space, integrals-with respect to which express the mean value of functionals of Brownian motion trajectories. Brownian trajectories had previously been considered as merely physical (rather than mathematical) phe nomena. A. N. Kolmogorov generalized Wiener's construction to allow one to establish the existence of a measure corresponding to an arbitrary random process. These investigations were the beginning of the development of the theory of stochastic processes. A considerable part of this theory involves the solution of problems in the theory of measures on function spaces in the specific language of stochastic pro cesses. For example, finding the properties of sample functions is connected with the problem of the existence of a measure on some space; certain problems in statistics reduce to the calculation of the density of one measure w. r. t. another one, and the study of transformations of random processes leads to the study of transformations of function spaces with measure. One must note that the language of probability theory tends to obscure the results obtained in these areas for mathematicians working in other fields. Another dir, ection leading to the study of integrals in function space is the theory and application of differential equations. A. N.

Classical Banach Spaces I written by J. Lindenstrauss and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-11 with Mathematics categories.

The appearance of Banach's book [8] in 1932 signified the beginning of a syste matic study of normed linear spaces, which have been the subject of continuous research ever since. In the sixties, and especially in the last decade, the research activity in this area grew considerably. As a result, Ban:ach space theory gained very much in depth as well as in scope: Most of its well known classical problems were solved, many interesting new directions were developed, and deep connections between Banach space theory and other areas of mathematics were established. The purpose of this book is to present the main results and current research directions in the geometry of Banach spaces, with an emphasis on the study of the structure of the classical Banach spaces, that is C(K) and Lip.) and related spaces. We did not attempt to write a comprehensive survey of Banach space theory, or even only of the theory of classical Banach spaces, since the amount of interesting results on the subject makes such a survey practically impossible.

Probability Measures On Locally Compact Groups written by H. Heyer and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Mathematics categories.

Probability measures on algebraic-topological structures such as topological semi groups, groups, and vector spaces have become of increasing importance in recent years for probabilists interested in the structural aspects of the theory as well as for analysts aiming at applications within the scope of probability theory. In order to obtain a natural framework for a first systematic presentation of the most developed part of the work done in the field we restrict ourselves to prob ability measures on locally compact groups. At the same time we stress the non Abelian aspect. Thus the book is concerned with a set of problems which can be regarded either from the probabilistic or from the harmonic-analytic point of view. In fact, it seems to be the synthesis of these two viewpoints, the initial inspiration coming from probability and the refined techniques from harmonic analysis which made this newly established subject so fascinating. The goal of the presentation is to give a fairly complete treatment of the central limit problem for probability measures on a locally compact group. In analogy to the classical theory the discussion is centered around the infinitely divisible probability measures on the group and their relationship to the convergence of infinitesimal triangular systems.

Embeddings And Extensions In Analysis written by J.H. Wells and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Mathematics categories.

The object of this book is a presentation of the major results relating to two geometrically inspired problems in analysis. One is that of determining which metric spaces can be isometrically embedded in a Hilbert space or, more generally, P in an L space; the other asks for conditions on a pair of metric spaces which will ensure that every contraction or every Lipschitz-Holder map from a subset of X into Y is extendable to a map of the same type from X into Y. The initial work on isometric embedding was begun by K. Menger [1928] with his metric investigations of Euclidean geometries and continued, in its analytical formulation, by I. J. Schoenberg [1935] in a series of papers of classical elegance. The problem of extending Lipschitz-Holder and contraction maps was first treated by E. J. McShane and M. D. Kirszbraun [1934]. Following a period of relative inactivity, attention was again drawn to these two problems by G. Minty's work on non-linear monotone operators in Hilbert space [1962]; by S. Schonbeck's fundamental work in characterizing those pairs (X,Y) of Banach spaces for which extension of contractions is always possible [1966]; and by the generalization of many of Schoenberg's embedding theorems to the P setting of L spaces by Bretagnolle, Dachuna Castelle and Krivine [1966].

This book is intended to be a detailed and carefully written account of various versions of the Littlewood-Paley theorem and of some of its applications, together with indications of its general significance in Fourier multiplier theory. We have striven to make the presentation self-contained and unified, and adapted primarily for use by graduate students and established mathematicians who wish to begin studies in these areas: it is certainly not intended for experts in the subject. It has been our experience, and the experience of many of our students and colleagues, that this is an area poorly served by existing books. Their accounts of the subject tend to be either ill-suited to the needs of a beginner, or fragmentary, or, in one or two instances, obscure. We hope that our book will go some way towards filling this gap in the literature. Our presentation of the Littlewood-Paley theorem proceeds along two main lines, the first relating to singular integrals on locally com pact groups, and the second to martingales. Both classical and modern versions of the theorem are dealt with, appropriate to the classical n groups IRn, ?L , Tn and to certain classes of disconnected groups. It is for the disconnected groups of Chapters 4 and 5 that we give two separate accounts of the Littlewood-Paley theorem: the first Fourier analytic, and the second probabilistic.

Inequalities written by Edwin F. Beckenbach and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Mathematics categories.

Since the elassie work on inequalities by HARDY, LITTLEWOOD, and P6LYA in 1934, an enonnous amount of effort has been devoted to the sharpening and extension of the elassieal inequalities, to the discovery of new types of inequalities, and to the application of inqualities in many parts of analysis. As examples, let us eite the fields of ordinary and partial differential equations, whieh are dominated by inequalities and variational prineiples involving functions and their derivatives; the many applications of linear inequalities to game theory and mathe matieal economics, which have triggered a renewed interest in con vexity and moment-space theory; and the growing uses of digital com puters, which have given impetus to a systematie study of error esti mates involving much sophisticated matrix theory and operator theory. The results presented in the following pages reflect to some extent these ramifications of inequalities into contiguous regions of analysis, but to a greater extent our concem is with inequalities in their native habitat. Since it is elearly impossible to give a connected account of the burst of analytic activity of the last twenty-five years centering about inequalities, we have d. eeided to limit our attention to those topies that have particularly delighted and intrigued us, and to the study of whieh we have contributed.
