In The Fictions of Translation, emerging and seasoned scholars from a range of cultures bring fresh perspectives to bear on the age-old practice of translation. The current movement of people, knowledge and goods around the world has made intercultural communication both prevalent and indispensable. Consequently, the translator has become a more prominent figure and translation an increasingly present theme in works of literature. Embedding translation in a fictional setting and considering its most extreme forms – pseudotranslation or self-translation, for example – are fruitful ways of conceptualizing the act of translating and extending the boundaries of translation studies. Taken together, the various translational fictions examined in this collection yield new insights into questions of displacement, migration and hybridity, all characteristic of the modern world. The Fictions of Translation will thus be of interest to practising translators, students and scholars of translation and literary studies, as well as a more general readership.

Alltagsgeschichte, or the history of everyday life, emerged during the 1980s as the most interesting new field among West German historians and, more recently, their East German colleagues. Partly in reaction to the modernization theory pervading West German social history in the 1970s, practitioners of alltagsgeschichte stressed the complexities of popular experience, paying particular attention, for instance, to the relationship of the German working class to Nazism. Now the first English translation of a key volume of essays (Alltagsgeschichte: Zur Rekonstruktion historischer Erfahrungen und Lebensweisen) presents this approach and shows how it cuts across the boundaries of established disciplines. The result is a work of great methodological, theoretical, and historiographical significance as well as a substantive contribution to German studies. Introduced by Alf Lüdtke, the volume includes two empirical essays, one by Lutz Niethammer on life courses of East Germans after 1945 and one by Lüdtke on modes of accepting fascism among German workers. The remaining five essays are theoretical: Hans Medick writes on ethnological ways of knowledge as a challenge to social history; Peter Schöttler, on mentalities, ideologies, and discourses and alltagsgeschichte; Dorothee Wierling, on gender relations and alltagsgeschichte; Wolfgang Kaschuba, on popular culture and workers' culture as symbolic orders; and Harald Dehne on the challenge alltagsgeschichte posed for Marxist-Leninist historiography in East Germany.

An examination of what can be learned by looking at the journals and diaries of Jews living during the Holocaust. What are the effects of radical oppression on the human psyche? What happens to the inner self of the powerless and traumatized victim, especially during times of widespread horror? In this bold and deeply penetrating book, Amos Goldberg addresses diary writing by Jews under Nazi persecution. Throughout Europe, in towns, villages, ghettos, forests, hideouts, concentration and labor camps, and even in extermination camps, Jews of all ages and of all cultural backgrounds described in writing what befell them. Die mittelalterliche Stadt gilt vielen Stadttheoretikern als Musterbeispiel einer Stadt, die durch die Verschmelzung der privaten und wirtschaftlichen Lebensbereiche sowie durch starke gemeinschaftliche Verbindungen eine harmonische Lebenseinheit ermöglichte. Die vorliegende vergleichende Untersuchung zweier europäischer Städte des Spätmittelalters – Bologna und Straßburg – differenziert dieses Bild. Drei Sorten von topographischen Indikatoren werden hier berücksichtigt: die Märkte, die Wohn- und Arbeitsorte sowie die Begegnungsorte der Nachbarschaft. Beispielsweise waren in Straßburg Verbrauchermärkte und Gewerbemärkte räumlich verzahnter als in Bologna. Auch die Distanz zwischen Wohn- und Arbeitsort war in Bologna tendenziell größer als in Straßburg. Der Bologneser Stadtraum war insgesamt hierarchischer und funktionaler strukturiert als derjenige von Straßburg. Die Studie stellt einige stadtgeschichtliche Vorurteile infrage, etwa die räumliche Einheit von Wohnen und Arbeiten oder die Vorstellung einer einheitlichen okzidentalen Stadt des Mittelalters.

Zu denken wäre auch an Gehalte religiösen Praxiswissens und Formate einer religiösen Reflexions- und Kommunikationskultur, die in die Alltagswelt eingelagert sind und sich in Gesprächsanalysen nachzeichnen lassen. Ziel des vorliegenden Bandes ist es, die vielfältigen Bezüge zwischen Alltagswelt und christlich-religiöser Praxis zu identifizieren, zu analysieren, zu reflektieren und schließlich für eine alltagsweltsensible praktisch-theologische Theoriebildung fruchtbar zu machen.

During the late Middle Ages, a considerable number of men in Germany and Switzerland were executed for committing sodomy. Even in the seventeenth century, simply speaking of the act was cause for censorship. Here, in the first history of sodomy in these countries, Helmut Puff argues that accusations of sodomy during this era were actually crucial to the success of the Protestant Reformation. Drawing on both literary and historical evidence, Puff shows that speakers of German associated sodomy with Italy and, increasingly, Catholicism. As the Reformation gained momentum, the formerly unspeakable crime of sodomy gained a voice, as Martin Luther and others deployed accusations of sodomy to discredit the upper ranks of the Church and to create a sense of community among Protestant believers. During the sixteenth century, reactions against this defamatory rhetoric, and fear that mere mention of sodomy would incite sinful acts, combined to repress even court cases of sodomy. Written with precision and meticulously researched, this revealing study will interest historians of gender, sexuality, and religion, as well as scholars of medieval and early modern history and culture.
