"Transforming bewilderment into understanding and pleasure while preserving a sense of Robbe-Grillet's considerable richness and complexity, Smith elucidates the defining elements of the writer's fictional world - characters that barely exist, changeable narrators, plots that defy logic, notoriously meticulous descriptions that never quite form a complete story. Smith examines Robbe-Grillet's embrace of discontinuity, circularity, indeterminacy, and linguistic play. Smith also poses questions about how we should view this perplexing writer: as an author of hyperobjective novels and short stories, a subjective novelist, a realist, or a writer who undermines the narrative's claim to represent reality. In addition Smith evaluates the sado-erotic imagery of Robbe-Grillet's middle and late novels as a metaphorical play with textual and social conventions."--BOOK JACKET.

Alain Robbe-Grillet uses techniques from film to make his novels, and adapts novel techniques to construct and then shatter his film narratives. Both forms of art are indebted to painters' and printmakers' visual perceptions of their material and their use of space and spatial relationships to construct artistic illusions.

In a world where the acceptance of relativism has caused erosion in the tradition of Cartesian dualism, representationalism in the arts has come under serious questioning. The contributors to this book seek new standards for defining and evaluating works of art. Relativism in the Arts brings together thinkers in the fields of music, art criticism, literary criticism, philosophy, and the “history of consciousness” to confront the problems of relativist aesthetics. Their essays range from theoretical discussions of the definition of art in our times to close examinations of particular artworks or art forms. The introduction by Betty Jean Craige presents reasons for the cultural self-reflectivity that gives rise to the peculiarities of modern art.

Of Words And The World written by David R. Ellison and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-03-22 with Literary Criticism categories.

Here David Ellison explores the problems encountered by France's best experimental authors writing between 1956 and 1984, when faced with the question: "What should my writing be about?" These years are characterized by the rise of the "new novelists," who questioned the representational function of writing as they created works of imagination that turned in upon themselves and away from exterior reality. It became fashionable at one point to affirm that literature was no longer about the world but uniquely about the words on a page, the signifying surface of the text. Ellison tests this assumption, showing that even in the most seemingly self-referential fictions the words point to the world from which they can never completely separate themselves. Through close readings Ellison examines the novels and theoretical writings of authors whose works are fundamental to our perception of contemporary French writing and thought: Camus, Robbe-Grillet, Simon, Duras, Sarraute, Blanchot, and Beckett. The result is a new understanding of the link between the referential function of literary language and the problematic of the ethics of fiction.

Fantasy is a creation of the Enlightenment, and the recognition that excitement and wonder can be found in imagining impossible things. From the ghost stories of the Gothic to the zombies and vampires of twenty-first-century popular literature, from Mrs Radcliffe to Ms Rowling, the fantastic has been popular with readers. Since Tolkien and his many imitators, however, it has become a major publishing phenomenon. In this volume, critics and authors of fantasy look at its history since the Enlightenment, introduce readers to some of the different codes for the reading and understanding of fantasy, and examine some of the many varieties and subgenres of fantasy; from magical realism at the more literary end of the genre, to paranormal romance at the more popular end. The book is edited by the same pair who produced The Cambridge Companion to Science Fiction (winner of a Hugo Award in 2005).

Robert Rauschenberg And Surrealism written by Gavin Parkinson and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-03-23 with Art categories.

The art of Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) is usually viewed as quite distinct from Surrealism, a movement which the artist himself displayed some hostility towards. However, Rauschenberg had a very positive reception among Surrealists, particularly across the period 1959-69. In the face of Rauschenberg's avowals of his own 'literalism' and insistence on his art as 'facts,' this book gathers generous evidence of the poetic, metaphorical, allusive, associative and connotative dimensions of the artist's oeuvre as identified by Surrealists, and thus extrapolates new readings from Rauschenberg's key works on that basis. By viewing Rauschenberg's art against the expansion of the cultural influence of the United States in Europe in the period after the Second World War and the increasingly politicized activities of the Surrealists in the era of the Algerian War of Independence (1954-62), Robert Rauschenberg and Surrealism shows how poetic inference of the artist's work was turned towards political interpretation. By analysing Rauschenberg's art in the context of Surrealism, and drawing from it new interpretations and perspectives, this volume simultaneously situates the Surrealist movement in 1960s American art criticism and history.
