Die Welt ist heutzutage als post-kommunistisch zu trachten einerseits, im Sinne des offiziellen Endes der Explosion des kollektiven Zorns. Daran ist verbunden die Reduktion von allem auf die individuelle Verantwortung andererseits (Neoliberalismus). Wer freiwillig oder zufällig aus diesem privilegierten Gefüge gefallen ist, wird als abnormal oder pathologisch beurteilt; entweder juristisch oder psychiatrisch schließlich als „ein gefährliches Individuum“. Hier fehlt die systematische Auffassung von einem pathologischen Einzelnen. Ein Versuch ist daher dringend, über die Ebene des (liberal-demokratischen) Individuums hinaus, das Pathologische spekulativ zu kritisieren; nämlich statt des Individuums seitens der Krise des Systems oder der Struktur das Pathologische positiv zu demarkieren. Was heißt demgemäß (rein) pathologisch überhaupt? Es ist weder medizinisch-psychiatrische Krankheit noch vitale Kraft biopolitisch gesehen (Canguilhem, Foucault). Es geht nie um die Physik, wie problematisch das Pathologische in einem bestimmten Körper oder Organismus erscheint. Vielmehr geht es um die Meta-physik des Pathologischen sowohl als des transzendental-gemeinsamen Grundes all des Seienden wie aber auch als der Krise desselben Transzendentalen schlechthin. Daher ist diese Kategorie sowohl mit dem Grenzbegriff als auch mit der Usprungsproblematik als solches gebunden, was für immer unbestimmt in Gegenwart zurückkehrt und die Struktur in Krise geraten macht; nämlich als wirklicher Ursprung Das Pathologische als transzendentale Kategorie rückt den Fokus vom Individuum in die Struktur als Subjekt hinein. Statt der doppelten Relation des Individuums zum (pathologischen) Anderen und jenem Entfremdeten gegenüber (symbolischer) Struktur steht im Vordergrund die Beziehung der Struktur auf Krise als ihr inhärentes Anderes. Hier ist nicht mehr gültig die romantische Vorstellung, „genial-manisches Individuum jenseits der Struktur“ - z.B. Antigone. Stattdessen fokussiert es diesmal auf den immanenten Umgang mit der Krise derselben Struktur. Von nun an ist die entscheidende Frage folgendermaßen, „wie lässt sich die in Krise gefallene Struktur wieder in Ordnung bringen, vermittels neuer Regeln, die nur auf Basis von den Anderen hergestellt werden kann?“

In the modern era, warfare came to play a crucial role in the formation of states, whereas the new wars emerging at the beginning of the 21st century have mostly gone together with the failure or collapse of states. The author draws out the key shifts involved in this process: from symmetrical conflicts between states to asymmetrical global relationships of force; from national armies to increasingly private or commercial bands of warlords, child soldiers and mercenaries; from pitched battles to protracted conflicts in which there is often little fighting and most of the violence is directed against civilians. Changes in weapons technology have combined with complex economic factors to make the prospect of endlessly simmering wars a real danger in the years to come. Against this background, the author outlines the rise of a novel form of international terrorism, conceived more as a political method of communication than as an element in a military strategy. The resulting challenges faced by Western governments, and the costs and benefits associated with any response, are taken up in a concluding section that contrasts the characteristic European and American approaches and examines the implications for the future of international law. As concerns about humankind’s relationship with the environment move inexorably up the agenda, this volume tells the story of the history of the concept of ecology itself and adds much to the historical and philosophical debate over this multifaceted discipline. The text provides readers with an overview of the theoretical, institutional and historical formation of ecological knowledge. The varied local conditions of early ecology are considered in detail, while epistemological problems that lie on the borders of ecology, such as disunity and complexity, are discussed. The book traces the various phases of the history of the concept of ecology itself, from its 19th century origins and antecedents, through the emergence of the environmental movement in the later 20th century, to the future, and how ecology might be located in the environmental science framework of the 21st century. The study of ‘ecological’ phenomena has never been confined solely to the work of researchers who consider themselves ecologists. Thus, there exist numerous disciplinary subdivisions and research programmes within the field, the boundaries of which remain blurred. Anthropologists have written a great deal about the coastal adaptations and seafaring traditions of Pacific Islanders, but have had much less to say about the significance of rivers for Pacific island culture, livelihood and identity. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people. Several authors take a political ecology approach to their topic, but the emphasis here is less on hydro-politics than on the cultural meaning of rivers to the communities we describe. How has the cultural significance of rivers shifted as a result of colonisation, development and nation-building? How do people whose identities are fundamentally rooted in their relationship to a particular river renegotiate that relationship when the river is dammed to generate hydro-power or polluted by mining activities? First published in the US in 1932, The Sleepwalkers is about three protagonists "sleepwalking", that is, living between vanishing and emerging ethical systems just as the somnambulist exists in a state between sleeping and waking. Together they present a panorama of German society and its progressive deterioration of values that culminated in defeat and collapse at the end of World War I. The novel explores what Broch described as "the loneliness of the I" in its three parts. The protagonists of the first two parts of the book are represented as holding to certain sets of values. Broch describes the struggles they undergo as their codes for living, or values, prove inadequate to the realities of the social environment they find themselves in. Joachim von Pasenow in the first part is "the romantic". In the second part, August Esch tries to live according to the motto "business is business". Eventually, in the third part, the amoral Huguenau's only standard for behavior is his personal profit. He follows this maxim in all his actions, swindling and murdering without remorse. Ultimately, he reaches a point of zero values without remorse and his dealings bring him finally to the zero point of values. Although Broch doesn't hold Huguenau up as someone to admire, he does present him as the inevitable harbinger of fascism. As one reviewer noted, "His characters are sleepwalkers because their own lives are shaped by the forces of the nightmare reality in which they live."
