Leonard travelled the world, and enjoyed his adventurous life as a Wireless Operator in the British Merchant Navy until he started writing to his school friend Beryl. They fell deeply in love and were married for six- and-a-half years, but were able to spend barely a year of that time together because of the demands of Leonard's job. Aged only 33, his life ended in 1944 when his ship was sunk by a German torpedo. He was last seen in the Wireless Cabin, sending out distress signals.Set during the turbulent years between the Great Depression and World War 2, this is a true story of love, faith, fidelity and heartbreak from the perspective of one young couple among the millions whose happiness was destroyed by the War, largely told in the tender letters they wrote to each other.

Cosmopolitan visions Terry A. Cooney traces the evolution of the Partisan Review--often considered to be the most influential little magazine ever published in America--during its formative years, giving a lucid and dispassionate view of the magazine and its luminaries who played a leading role in shaping the public discourse of American intellectuals. Included are Lionel Trilling, Philip Rahv, William Phillips, Dwight Macdonald, F. W. Dupee, Mary McCarthy, Sidney Hook, Harold Rosenberg, and Delmore Schwartz, among others. "An excellent book, which works at each level on which it operates. It succeeds as a straightforward narrative account of the Partisan Review in the 1930s and 1940s. The magazine's leading voices--William Phillips, Philip Rahv, Dwight MacDonald, Lionel Trilling, and all the rest--receive their due. . . . Among the themes that engage Cooney. . . . are: how they dealt with 'modernism' in culture and radicalism in politics, each on its own and in combination; how Jewishness played a complex and fascinating role in many of the thinkers' lives; and, especially, how 'cosmopolitanism' best explains what the Partisan Review was all about."--Robert Booth Fowler, Journal of American History

Darkness Dreams written by Stephen A. Laucik and has been published by iUniverse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-12-20 with Family & Relationships categories.

Two years before he fell in love with another woman and decided to leave his wife, Stephen Laucik began keeping a private spiritual journal, "listening" to his daily life as a form of prayer. Darkness & Dreams, a highly condensed edition of that journal, is the result. It chronicles Laucik’s agonizing process of ending a long, dysfunctional relationship and coming to terms with his decision before God. It is an intensely personal narrative of a universal theme: the death and resurrection of love. For readers facing similar circumstances, the story pays off both psychologically and spiritually. On one level, it validates every emotion men and women normally experience at the ending of one love story and the beginning of another. More important, however, it simply and eloquently testifies to the dogged persistence of that Divine Lover who never leaves, even in our darkest hours. Ultimately, Darkness & Dreams holds up a mirror in which readers can see themselves, their intimate relationships, and their own spiritual journeys with greater clarity and compassion.

Until the present time there have been seven stages of United States expansionism - from the Federal unification of the original states to the 'New World Order' planned by US-led commercial elites before and after 1989. Extrapolating both from the author's distinctive reading of history and the evidence of President Obama's own speeches and actions, The Secret American Dream proposes that the US now faces a new, eighth, phase of expansion. In this, the traditional 'American Dream' of peace, social order and prosperity would be extended to all humankind. This ambitious plan - little known and understood outside President Obama's inner circle - would involve the creation of a benevolent World State initiated, but not dominated, by the United States. The Secret American Dream suggests that the first step in establishing the World State - a supranational authority with legal powers to abolish war and nuclear weapons - would be a visit by the US President to the UN General Assembly requesting a World Constitutional Convention. Under the President's proposals, the existing UN General Assembly would become an elected, 850-seat lower house, alongside a new World Senate and an executive called the World Commission. A senatorial World Openness Committee would control the world's commercial elites and harness their positive skills and energies. Founded on altruistic and philanthropic principles, the World State would bring global peace, disarmament and the opportunity of prosperity to every individual on Earth. The abolition of war and nuclear stockpiles would remove the threat of nuclear war and the possibility of ex-Soviet nuclear weapons falling into terrorist hands. It would also create a 'peace dividend' of nearly US$1.5 trillion per year, which could be spent on eliminating world poverty, disease and famine; on guaranteeing financial instability and a minimum income for all; and on solving energy and environmental problems. Initiatives by President Obama in a range of areas, such as his recent nuclear disarmament deal with Russia, show that he is already taking steps to implement this 'secret' American Dream.

From award-winning author Deborah Heiligman comes Torpedoed, a true account of the attack and sinking of the passenger ship SS City of Benares, which was evacuating children from England during WWII. Amid the constant rain of German bombs and the escalating violence of World War II, British parents by the thousands chose to send their children out of the country: the wealthy, independently; the poor, through a government relocation program called CORB. In September 1940, passenger liner SS City of Benares set sail for Canada with one hundred children on board. When the war ships escorting the Benares departed, a German submarine torpedoed what became known as the Children's Ship. Out of tragedy, ordinary people became heroes. This is their story. This title has Common Core connections.

The story I show begins in 2007, New York City, the year before the financial crisis. The novel centers on three roommates; a teacher, financial analyst, and a bartender. The first part of the story focuses on the teacher and analyst. With their father and aunt’s influence pushing them towards their professions and dreams, both in unique ways, they learn the real lesson will be from reality and a changing world. Soon that world, or worse their dreams, turns on them and they must reinvent themselves afar. With the help of the bartender, they use their distinct talents to get back where they want to be. It’s only when they are away from their past, that they learn who they really are and what they really want. The storyline that sounds like the beginning of a bar joke, is anything but.

Stephen King said, "Writing is an act of self-hypnosis, and in that state a kind of total emotional recall takes place." THE DREAM STEALERS started out to be a long letter to my children, but as I got into the writing it evolved into a novel. I was able to relive all the sweet and bitter years of a half century ago. From the beautiful women, the club singing, the Navy camaraderie, and even the months I spent in a Naval hospital. As I delved into the writing, I could recall events and word for word conversations that I'd long ago forgotten. And then in my later years re-experiencing the preciousness of my first true love and the hurt of living the adage, "History tends to repeat itself." However, another adage applies: "Better to have loved and lost than to have never loved." "...let's just be glad we had some time to spend together..." {For The Good Times}
