Die Aufsätze „Inzestscheu“, eine Abhandlung über den Totemismus, „das Tabu und die Ambivalenz der Gefühlsregungen“, „Animismus, Magie und Allmacht der Gedanken“ sowie „die Infantile Wiederkehr des Totemismus“, dessen Inhalt eine Gesellschaftstheorie, basierend auf den Grundlagen der ihm vorliegenden ethnologischen Befunde sowie seiner Psychoanalyse ist, bilden die Säulen dieses Werkes, welches auch aus sprachlicher Sicht als sein gelungenstes gilt.In dieser Hausarbeit soll weniger auf die zwar zweifellos wichtige Thematik des Inzesttabus als vielmehr auf die religiösen Aspekte eingegangen werden. Eine Eingrenzung des Themas ist an dieser Stelle nötig, wäre doch der Inhalt sonst nur allzu oberflächlich abgehandelt. Die Entscheidung, den Fokus auf das religiöse Moment zu legen, ergab sich mit Blick auf den Seminarinhalt.

The development of religion is not interpreted as a progressive, evolutionary and target-oriented process; religion is more like a stage for human dramas and spiritual conflicts, i.e. it is ultimately understood as the expression and regulation of instinct in relation to objects.
