Ketchikan, Alaska is the fifth most populous city in the state of Alaska with a population of only 8050 as of 2010. Ketchikan is a small town with a big heart and a dedication to preserving its very unique past. An entire museum, the Totem Heritage Center, is devoted to the story of totem poles, explaining the importance these works of art have and continue to have on the native people of Alaska. And as you will learn at the museum, totem poles were placed outside homes, and in some places still are placed outside homes, to tell the story of the people and their ancestors. It was one way ancient peoples communicated with one another and left their history behind, much like a scribe, for those you would come after them. Ketchikan is named after the Ketchikan Creek that flows through the town. And as you will see in this book there is a shopping place called Creek Street that not only has historical significance of a somewhat sordid nature, but it is also built right over Ketchikan Creek, an old historical area preserved for us to enjoy. Written by the award winning author, attorney and former teacher, Penelope Dyan, with photography by John D. Weigand, this book is sure to delight any child as he or she practices reading skills through word recognition, repetition and rhyme. There is also a Bellissimavideo music video on YouTube that goes along with this book to make learning even more fun!

During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. The WPA Guide the Alaskan Territory takes the reader on a journey across the Land of the Midnight Sun, from the North Slope to the Aleutian Islands. First published in 1939, the guide reports on all the things that make this soon-to-be state unique: the influence of Alaska’s indigenous peoples, the thriving fishing industry, and the distinctive flora and fauna.

Through the mists of Alaska's rain forest, totem poles have stood watch for untold generations. Imbued with mystery to outsider eyes, the fierce, carved symbols silently spoke of territories, legends, memorials, and paid debts. Today many of these cultural icons are preserved for the public to enjoy in heritage parks and historical centers through southeast Alaska. And, after nearly a century of repression, totem carving among Alaska's Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian peoples is flourishing again. In this newly revised edition of Alaska's Totem Poles, readers learn about the history and use of totems, clan crests, symbolism, and much more. A special section describes where to go to view totems. Author Pat Kramer traveled throughout the homelands of the Totem People—along Alaska's Panhandle, the coast of British Columbia, and into the Northwest—meeting the people, learning their stores, and researching and photographing totem poles. Foreword writer David A. Boxley also offers the unique perspective of a Native Alaskan carver who has been a leader in the renaissance. This is a handy guide for travelers in Southeast Alaska who want to learn more about Alaska's totems. There's even a guide of where to view totems in the state. Ravens, killer whales (Orca) and bears... they're all represented in the totem.
