Winner of the Competition “Prize for PhD Thesis 2023” arranged by Sapienza University Press. From infancy to adulthood, touch shapes our understanding of self and others, influencing social interactions and emotional bonds. This work delves into the embodied nature of pleasant social touch. Through a series of innovative studies, the author investigates how social context and body location affect touch preferences in typically developing and autistic adults, as well as the influence of virtual body ownership on social touch perception. The thesis also explores the role of embodied simulation in empathy for pleasant touch and examines motor facilitation effects during the observation of others’ tactile experiences. Furthermore, it proposes a potential link between empathy for pleasant touch and prosocial behaviour. By combining cutting-edge techniques with established experimental paradigms, this thesis offers insights into the intricate relationship between touch, body representations, and social cognition. From exploring the roots of touch processing difficulties in autism spectrum disorders to uncovering the neural mechanisms underlying positive empathy, this work bridges crucial gaps in our understanding of social touch. Whether you’re a researcher in neuroscience and psychology, or simply curious about the power of human touch, this thesis provides a comprehensive and thoughtprovoking exploration of how our tactile experiences shape our social world. Discover the embodied phenomenon of pleasant social touch and its implications for human interaction.

Rooted in multimodal conversation analysis and based on video recordings of naturally occurring social interactions, this book presents a novel analytical perspective for the study of touch. The authors focus on how different forms of touch are interactionally organized in everyday, institutional, and professional practices, showing how touch is multimodally achieved in social interaction, how it acquires its significance, how it is embedded in the current activity and in its social context, and how it is systematically intertwined with talk, facial expressions, and body posture. Including work by a wide range of renowned researchers, this volume provides rich visual illustrations of situations featuring touch as a social and intersubjective practice. The studies make a compelling contribution to the field by clearly examining and demonstrating the social meaning of touch for the participants in social interaction in a broad range of contexts. Presenting a new methodology for the study of touch, this is key reading for all researchers and scholars working in conversation analysis, multimodality, and related areas.

A presentation of clinical outcomes that demonstrate significant new insights into the value of touch to the therapeutic process. In this book, dance movement psychotherapist Katy Dymoke presents an in-depth case study of work with a client with a profound learning disability. The research stems from a postdoctoral thesis sponsored by the United Kingdom's National Health Service, where Dymoke was employed at the time of the clinical outcomes relayed in this work. The volume includes transcripts of the session content; descriptions of how incidents of touch were initiated and undertaken within the process; subsequent categorizations of the incidents of touch as self-directed, passive, or reciprocal; and commentary and discussion of the therapeutic process. As we see, the incidents of touch contribute to the client's process of mental distress, trauma, lack of capacity, and more. Finally, Dymoke includes sections on the ethical issues of this work in the NHS, on doing research with such a client group, and on the theoretical models that emerged.

Designed to help adults talk with toddlers and preschoolers about sexual abuse in a way that reduces embarrassment and fear and emphasizes self-reliance and open communication, It’s MY Body does not contain specific references and stories about sexual abuse, a nod to the tender age of its target audience. It does, however, emphasize how children’s feelings can help them make decisions about sharing their bodies, and how to communicate those decisions to others. The book introduces two “touching codes,” which children can use to protect themselves when they are uncomfortable.

Touch matters. It is fundamental to how we know ourselves and each other, and it is central to how we communicate. Digital touch is embedded in many technologies, from wearable devices and gaming hardware to tactile robots and future technologies. What would it be like if we could hug or touch digitally across distance? How might this shape our sense of connection? How might we establish trust or protect our privacy and safety? Digital Touch is a timely and original book that addresses such questions. Offering a rich account of digital touch, the book introduces the key issues and debates, as well as the design and ethical challenges raised by digital touch. Using clear, accessible examples and creative scenarios, the book shows how touch – how we touch, as well as what, whom and when we touch – is being profoundly reshaped by our use of technologies. Above all, it highlights the importance of digital touch in our daily lives and how it will impact our relationships and way of life in the future. The first work of its kind, Digital Touch is the go-to book for anyone wanting to get to grips with this crucial emerging topic, especially students and scholars of Digital Media and Communication Studies, Digital Humanities, Sensory Studies, and Science and Technology Studies.

Body And Earth written by Andrea Olsen and has been published by Wesleyan University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-04 with Performing Arts categories.

"Body is our first environment," writes Andrea Olsen. "It is the medium through which we know the earth." In a remarkable integration of environmental science, biology, meditation, and creative expression, Olsen, a dancer who teaches in the environmental studies program at Middlebury College, offers a guide to a holistic understanding of person and place. Part workbook, part exploration, Body and Earth considers the question of how we can best, most responsibly inhabit both our bodies and our planet. Olsen displays an easy command of fields as diverse as geology, biochemistry, ecology, and anatomy as she explores the ways in which our bodies are derived from and connected to the natural world. But Body and Earth is not just a lesson, it is also an investigation. Arranged as a 31-day program, the book offers not only a wealth of scientific information, but also exercises for both exploring the body and connecting with place; illustrations and works of art that illuminate each chapter's themes; and Olsen's own meditations and reflections, connecting the topics to her personal history and experience. Olsen insists that neither body nor landscape are separate from our fundamental selves, but in a culture which views the body as a mechanism to be trained and the landscape as a resource to be exploited, we need to learn to see again their fundamental wholeness and interconnection. Through hard data, reflection, exercises, and inspiration, Body and Earth offers a guide to responsible stewardship of both our planet and our persons.

Human Rights And The Body written by Annabelle Mooney and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-05-13 with Political Science categories.

Human Rights and the Body is a response to the crisis in human rights, to the very real concern that without a secure foundation for the concept of human rights, their very existence is threatened. While there has been consideration of the discourses of human rights and the way in which the body is written upon, research in linguistics has not yet been fully brought to bear on either human rights or the body. Drawing on legal concepts and aspects of the law of human rights, Mooney aims to provide a universally defensible set of human rights and a foundation, or rather a frame, for them. She argues that the proper frames for human rights are firstly the human body, seen as an index reliant on the natural world, secondly the globe and finally, language. These three frames generate rights to food, water, sleep and shelter, environmental protection and a right against dehumanization. This book is essential reading for researchers and graduate students in the fields of human rights and semiotics of law.
