Clinicians have long been fascinated by the rare and exotic in med icine. Similarly, psychiatrists and mental health professionals have been intrigued by the uncommon and extraordinary syndromes which, despite their rarity, have much to teach us about the limitless forms of human adaptation. Of particular interest is the fact that fragments and partial expressions of these rare disorders are often encountered in the dreams and fantasies of the "ordinary" patient. For this reason, the understanding and insights collected in this volume are likely to have clinical usefulness far beyond those rare occasions when we encounter the exotic in its fully developed form. These disorders demonstrate the complex interplay between intra psychic dynamic forces and the cultural influences which act to shape overt symptomatology. The section on extraordinary syndromes from non-Western cultures demonstrates the universality of the psychody namic roots of human suffering, despite the seemingly strange furms in which this suffering is expressed. As clinicians we are too often restricted by ethnocentric attitudes and culturally determined stereotypes. This volume provides a stimulating and enjoyable opportunity to reach beyond those limitations.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a chronic, neurobehavioral disorder of childhood that has traditionally been treated with medication. Although available, many mental health professionals are not familiar with an effective behavioral therapy for tic disorders. This therapist guide outlines a safe and scientifically proven treatment that can help sufferers of TS and other tic disorders effectively manage their tics and improve their quality of life. The treatment described is an 11-session package for children and adults (ages 9 and older). Psychoeducation about tic disorders is blended with multiple components of behavior therapy, including habit reversal training (HRT), relaxation training, and function-based treatments. The primary goal of this program is to teach the patient effective tic management skills rather than to cure the tic disorder. At the start of the program, you will work with your patient to create a hierarchy of tics to be addressed in treatment. Each week, a new tic will be targeted and an appropriate function-based intervention implemented. Tic management skills are supplemented with relaxed breathing and progressive muscle relaxation exercises to help the patient combat anxiety. Relapse prevention and booster sessions help reinforce the skills taught in therapy and give the patient a positive outlook for the future. Complete with step-by-step instructions for conducting sessions, as well as lists of materials needed and copies of necessary forms, this guide provides you with all the information you need to effectively administer treatment. Tourette's Syndrome is now recognized as a common, lifelong condition and a ``model'' disorder reflecting the interaction of genetic vulnerability and environmental factors. Along with progress in research on Tourette's and other tic disorders, new approaches to treating this neuropsychiatric disturbance are now attracting wide interest among mental health workers. This book provides the broadest, most up-to-date account of this group of disorders, their features, symptoms, etiology and diagnosis, and various psychosocial disorders with similar symptoms. It also presents a variety of environmental and pharmacological therapeutic approaches that underscore areas of disagreement in the field, as well as new genetic, neurochemical and pharmacologic knowledge. Contributors to this work are all leading researchers or clinicians.

Introduction To Behavioral Science In Medicine written by F.R. Hine and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Psychology categories.

This book is the product of many years' experience teaching behavioral science in a way that demonstrates its relevance to clinical medicine. We have been guided by the reactions and evaluations of many first-year medical students. The result is a conceptual framework different from those that we and others had tried before. Because the clinical relevance of knowledge about human behavior is less apparent to many first-year students than that of the other traditional pre clinical courses, books and courses organized as brief introductions to psychology, sociology, and behavioral neurology have often been poorly received. Various medical schools and texts have explored ways to overcome this difficulty. One text organizes the presentation around very practical problems which are of unmistakable interest to the future physician: the therapeutic relationship, death and dying, sexuality, and pain, to give a few examples. Another emphasizes stages of development, periods of the human life cycle, as its organizing principle. Both of these approaches have merit and have been used successfully in various schools. They seem to us, however, to have a potentially serious shortcoming. They focus student attention too much on the more immediately intriguing issues of specific clinical problems or on the more easily recognized age specific behavioral issues. In the limited time available, the teaching of general principles of human behavioral functioning may then be neglected.
