This book discusses the expansion of new activities carried out in Antarctica and the focus among treaty parties on the perceived challenges posed by adventure tourism in the region. Shedding light on the latest trends and the modus operandi of all parties involved, it draws attention to new elements in the debate on how tourism and environmental protection can best be reconciled, with tourism in Antarctica rapidly increasing in recent decades. As far as technical practice and visitor guidance are concerned, the challenge facing tour operators lies in determining whether tourism has a negative or positive impact on the environment. The individual chapters address the development of polar tourism in terms of numbers, types and activities. The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators, which advocates and promotes the practice of safe and environmentally responsible travel to the Antarctic, is also part of this study. In this context, special attention is paid to its strategies relating to adventure tourism – including both deep-field activities and those additional or new activities launched from traditional ship or yacht-based platforms. The analysis includes aspects of risk management and environmental considerations, as well as views on the cultural perspectives of Antarctica.

This thesis aims to describe and interpret the effects of tourism on historic sites in Antarctica and Svalbard (also known as Spitsbergen), and to assess the implications for management. Explorers, whalers, seal hunters, scientists and others have left many material remains in the Polar Regions that are significant because they tell the history of the exploration and exploitation of these regions. Contemporary polar tourism represents a new phase in this exploration and exploitation of the Polar Regions. The potential for the transformation of historic sites has increased following the substantial expansion of polar tourism in recent decades. Key cultural heritage sites are regularly included in standard tourist itineraries and are also the subject of specialized tourism. In this context, the central research question of this thesis is: What are the effects of tourism on polar historic sites, and what are the implications of this for the management of tourism and these historic sites?

The Committee supports tourism to the Antarctic provided it is not reserved for the privileged or endangers the wilderness values of the continent. It concludes that urgent interim measures are required to ensure that current and proposed tourist activities are regulated and that the Government should take initiatives in discussions at ATCPM's in the development of a tourist convention while at the same time applying Australian legislation in the AAT.

Tourism throughout the world raises environmental issues that are often concerned with conflicting rights and responsibilities: the inherent right of mankind to travel, the no-less inherent right of indigenous people to guard their environmental heritage, and the responsibility of governments - local, national or (in the unique case of Antarctica) international - to protect environments over which they exercise stewardship. Additionally, the presence of international commercial enterprises, especially marine and other mass transport modes, represent unique governance challenges. This book deals mainly with environmental issues and the management implications arising from polar tourism, one of the fastest-growing sectors of world tourism. However, many of the issues discussed here arise no less urgently in temperate and tropical wilderness areas, and indeed in any region where sensitive environments are subjected to mass tourism. The principles and guidelines discussed here are of interest and practical use in tourism studies generally. "Readers of this book embark on a stimulating journey into the world of polar tourism. With a focus on management aspects and environmental implications, the intricacies of polar tourism are discussed in an educated and thoughtful manner. Further conceptual background is provided on wilderness and cultural tourism to enable an informed assessment of the framework within which polar tourism operates. A powerful concluding chapter applies the technique of Multiple Resource Management Planning to polar tourism. This book is a valuable resource for students, academics and policy-makers alike." Polar Tourism Tourism in the Arctic and Antarctic Regions Edited by Colin Michael Hall University of Canberra, Australia and Margaret E. Johnston Lakehead University, Canada The world’s polar regions have witnessed rapid tourism growth in the past decade, and although this may have been a welcome economic boon, substantial questions are now being asked about the effects of tourism on the environment and its social impact on the indigenous peoples. This book provides the first comprehensive overview of tourism in the polar regions and addresses not only the impacts of tourism on these fragile regions, but also the ways by which it may be managed and regulated. It illustrates potential mechanisms by which tourism in environmentally sensitive and culturally unique areas can become sustainable. Polar Tourism is an invaluable book for students of tourism, northern studies, polar studies, and resource, environmental, and wilderness management.

Antarctica Travel Guide, Educative Discovery. The Attractiveness of the Earth, and Variety of its Nature. A Book. Although legend had told of a vast southern land referred to as Terra Australis since the 1st century AD, the first sighting of Antarctica is invariably attributed to Imperial Russian Navy captain Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen in 1820, with Captain James Cook having missing the continent by only 75 miles in 1773. The first landing was made in 1821 by American sealer John Davis, with samples of local flora and fauna taken in 1840 by the crew of the Jules Dumont d'Urville expedition. Tourism in Antarctica started in the 1950s with 500 lonely soles traveling from Chile and Argentina. These days, about 40,000 people a year make the trek to the natural, unspoiled beauty of the world's most southern continent. At twice the size of Australia, this land of ice, snow, rock and water, and vast wilderness gives many visitors a feeling of insignificance due to the sheer enormity of Antarctica. Add to this the adventure of getting here across the Southern Ocean and you have the trip of a lifetime and a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. A Book titled "Antarctica Tourism and Wildlife" has the entire information on Antarctica environment.
