Tourism development is not merely about boosting tourist figures and bringing in more tourist dollars. Undoubtedly, it has to do with developing tourism resources, infrastructure, products, and attractions, but it is also about a society, polity, and economy meeting the challenges of globalization, the new millennium, and nation-building. This book deals with those issues from different perspectives and through the case of Singapore, a city-state highly integrated into the global economy. It addresses specific areas like tourism manpower, theme parks, and beaches, as well as the broader issues of economic strategy, political economy, and culture. Collectively, the articles in this book provide readers with a sense of where Singapore has gone and where it is in terms of tourism management and policy.

Tourism And Regional Science written by Soushi Suzuki and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-07-27 with Business & Economics categories.

This book provides new roads, perspectives, and a synthesis for tourism and regional science research. Tourism has become one of the most dynamic sectors in the economy and has exhibited a structurally growing importance over the past decades. In many countries the economic significance of tourism now exceeds that of traditionally strong sectors like agriculture or transportation. It is noteworthy that in recent times, tourism research has gained great momentum from the perspective of: the leisure society; the psychological tension between hard work and a more relaxed lifestyle; and the productivity-enhancing or productivity-diminishing effects of leisure, recreation, and tourism. An abundance of new literature in the field of tourism management can also be found, for instance, in the areas of hospitality management, cultural events management, destination competitiveness policy and marketing, and transportation and logistics strategies, while much attention is also being paid to the opportunities provided by digital technology for the tourism sector. In addition, in the light of the many negative externalities of a rapidly growing tourism sector, there is also an abundant literature on the environmental and sustainability effects of tourism. This book has the following objectives: to explore the interwoven connection between regional science and tourism research; to suggest promising pathways for innovative regional science research at the interface of tourism and space; and to demonstrate the need for a new perspective on the tourism and regional science nexus by means of empirical studies.

This collection brings together papers presented at two international conferences on the theme of sustainable tourism in Hong Kong, namely the “International Conference on Sustainable Tourism and Resilient Communities”, held on 6-8 May 2015, and the “International Conference on Sustainable Tourism and Global-Local Understanding”, held on 11-13 May 2016. These conferences provided platforms for international scholars, researchers and students to share empirical studies and cases of sustainable tourism from different perspectives and on different themes. As such, this volume has a focus on Asian cases and examples, and, therefore, contributes to form a rich reference work for tourism researchers, tourism development leaders, policy-makers and practitioners.

Tourism In China written by David Airey and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-04-20 with Business & Economics categories.

Tourism in China has grown rapidly since the country started implementing its open-door policy in 1978. Tourism development is now an essential agenda item for the Chinese government's plan for economic & social growth. Policy and policy-making for tourism therefore provides the essential background to understand tourism development in China. This is the first book to set the development of tourism in China since 1949 in its policy context. Underpinned by a strong conceptual framework, this systematic study of China contributes to an in-depth understanding of how public policy-making for tourism works and how it affects the development of tourism in the real world. The text explores tourism policy during three distinct leadership periods since creation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949: Mao Zedong (1949-1978); Deng Xiaoping (1978-1997) and the Collective Leadership Era (1997-the present). The attitudes and values of leaders and central government agencies towards tourism are considered, as well as the interactions of ideological orthodoxies, socio-economic conditions and institutions in their influence on national policy-making and tourism development. A separate chapter is devoted to policy-making in China’s two Special Administrative Regions, Hong Kong and Macau, as well as Taiwan due to its political separation from the Mainland, and Tibet, given its distinctive characteristics. Drawing on China’s experience over sixty years the book concludes with both theoretical and practical implications for tourism policy-making. This timely volume offers important insights into China’s Tourism as well as contributing to a wider pattern of debates about the respective roles of government policy and the market in the past and future. The material draws on exclusive in-depth interviews with key informants in China and on government documents and official sources not generally available in the international literature. This will be of interest to higher level students, academics & researchers within Tourism, Policy studies, Politics, Geography and China Studies.
