This is an important account of the development of the ‘field-theory’ approach in the social sciences. Harald Mey concentrates on the writers from the 1930s to the present day who have used this approach to the study of the individual and of society, and gives a clear exposition of such ‘field-theory’ application in its many differing forms. In addition, the author shows how a concept which was initially useful in the physical sciences came to be used first by psychologists, and subsequently by sociologists and others in related disciplines, in their search for answers to the problems presented by the study of society. Mey describes how the use of the ‘field-theory’ perspective has fared when applied to specific areas of social research – education, personal relationships, group behaviour. He also compares the ‘field-theory’ approach to the study of societies with the structural/functional approach, and explains why he believes ‘field-theory’ has a number of advantages over the structural/functional approach, especially when it comes to the dynamic problem of social change.

This book presents the better understanding of infrared structures of particle scattering processes in quantum electrodynamics (QED) in four-dimensional spacetime. An S-matrix is the fundamental quantity in scattering theory. However, if a theory involves massless particles, such as QED and gravity, the conventional S-matrix has not been well defined due to the infrared divergence, and infrared dynamics thus needs to be understood in-depth to figure out the S-matrix. The book begins with introducing fundamental nature of the charge conservation law associated with asymptotic symmetry, and explaining its relations to soft theorems and memory effect. Subsequently it looks into an appropriate asymptotic state of the S-matrix without infrared divergences. The Faddeev-Kulish dressed state is known as a candidate of such a state, and its gauge invariant condition and its relation to the asymptotic symmetry are discussed. It offers an important building blocks for constructing the S-matrix without infrared divergences.

A theory that the behavior of nations to one another is a result of their differences and similarities in attributes has been tested on 1955 data. This paper reports a retest of this theory on 1963 data. The model interprets differences and similarities as implacable forces like gravity and centrifugal force which the nation cannot alter and which affect its behavior regardless of its history, culture, or other unique characteristics. A second model interprets differences and similarities as general forces modified in their impact on behavior by the unique characteristics of each nation. A retest of this model was consistent with previous findings in showing an ability to explain around fifty percent of the variation in international behavior. (Author).

The foreign relations of the United States are considered in terms of six hypotheses based on a linkage pre-theory, a social status theory, a distance theory, a power transition theory, integration-regional findings, and propositions about geographic distance. These hypotheses are linked together by the notion of a distance vector, interpreted in terms of the constructs of attribute space, behavior space, and dyads, and developed within a geometric framework called field theory. To test this field theory and hypotheses subsumed by it, data on nineteen foreign relations and actions of the U.S., ranging from tourists and treaties to negative communications and sanctions, toward 81 object nations were correlated with the distances between the U.S. and other nations on economic development, size or power bases, political orientation, socio-cultural dimensions, and geographic distance.
