As the story begins, Jason Wessman, seated in a hospital waiting room in Seattle, is about to visit his deathly ill cousin and alter ego, Jonah Cannard, from whom he has been estranged. The story involves the two cousins and a neighbor, Wes Jonnamass, who often serves as a counterpoint to the other two. Jasons presence at the hospital is due both to Wes and to a fourth man, Noah, Jasons brother seven years younger, who has encouraged Jason to reunite with the man whom he has loved but disapproved of for several years. From boys to men each in his own way voyages toward an illusive Byzantium. The author offers vignettes of each man, sailing together and alone, upon a similar sea, at times meeting, at times nearly lost. He shows the reader their impish boyhood adventures, their search for love and meaning, their choices that threaten their ships, and the discoveries that sail them into calm seas. In particular, Jason questions his former judgments. Through Noahs remarkable intervention and the strange circumstances surrounding Jonahs painting Sailing to Byzantium, he comes to understand the choices he and his fellow voyagers have made and the forgiveness, compassion and love among them. Praise for Toward Byzantium The choice of words, the rhythm of the words, the images the words stimulate, the structure of the sentences, the flow of the paragraphs, the progression of the chapters, the development of the themessimply superb. Toward Byzantium is a novel about lifes journeys, conducted in the company of loved ones and strangers, headed for some destination (Byzantium) that for most of our lives is cloaked in heavy fog, clouding our vision. This volume deals with relations between the West and Byzantium, from the accession of Otto I the Great in Germany in 962, until the Fourth Crusade when Constantinople was conquered by the Western crusading armies in 1204. The impact which these contacts and confrontations had on both sides is discussed in sections dealing with specific areas (such as the North, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain) as well as in sections dealing with specific aspects of the process: the journey, the attractions of the East, and the idea of "autoritates" and "translationes" of various political and intellectual ideas. An extensive index will help readers to find specific topics. The book is illustrated with maps, and with a number of objects betraying Byzantine influence in the West, or Western presence in Byzantium.

Byzantium After The Nation written by Dimitris Stamatopoulos and has been published by Central European University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-01 with History categories.

Dimitris Stamatopoulos undertakes the first systematic comparison of the dominant ethnic historiographic models and divergences elaborated by Greek, Bulgarian, Serbian, Albanian, Romanian, Turkish, and Russian intellectuals with reference to the ambiguous inheritance of Byzantium. The title alludes to the seminal work of Nicolae Iorga in the 1930s, Byzantium after Byzantium, that argued for the continuity between the Byzantine and the Ottoman empires. The idea of the continuity of empires became a kind of touchstone for national historiographies. Rival Balkan nationalisms engaged in a "war of interpretation" as to the nature of Byzantium, assuming different positions of adoption or rejection of its imperial model and leading to various schemes of continuity in each national historiographic canon. Stamatopoulos discusses what Byzantium represented for nineteenth- and twentieth-century scholars and how their perceptions related to their treatment of the imperial model: whether a different perception of the medieval Byzantine period prevailed in the Greek national center as opposed to Constantinople; how nineteenth-century Balkan nationalists and Russian scholars used Byzantium to invent their own medieval period (and, by extension, their own antiquity); and finally, whether there exist continuities or discontinuities in these modes of making ideological use of the past.

According to history books, the Roman Empire ended in 476 CE with the fall of Rome. But if you asked most people alive at that time, they would have pointed you to what they considered the continuation of the Roman Empire—the civilization we now call the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantines, however, were more than just a remnant of Roman glory. At its geographical peak, the Byzantine Empire stretched out across the Mediterranean world. Culturally, the Byzantines both preserved the knowledge of the classical world, much of which was lost in the West, and added to it. Inside you will read about... ✓ A Divided Empire ✓ The Fall of the West ✓ Rising to Glory ✓ An Age of War ✓ The Destruction of Icons ✓ The House of Macedon ✓ The Comnenian Revival ✓ The Final Decline And much more! Shaped by its classical roots, its Christian religion, and the changing medieval world, the story of the Byzantine Empire is one of both glorious victories and terrible defeats, of a civilization that rose from the brink of destruction again and again, and of the development of a culture whose vestiges remain today.
