This book considers the issue of sustainability in sub-Saharan Africa. It assesses the progress that has been made in sustainable development and the challenges that must still be addressed. Most importantly, it focuses on African experiences with sustainable development. The book integrates the theory, practice, ethics, and policy of sustainability to better understand the implications for problems and responses to sustainable development in Africa. No book has applied the SDGs to an evaluation of sustainable development in Africa. This book fills that gap. Chapters from leading scholars utilize various research methods combined with case study analysis to provide context and a deeper understanding of the critical issues in sustainability in the sub-Saharan African world. The first section of the book examines the theory of sustainability and provides an overview of some of the most important institutional questions in the discourse on environmental policies in the African world. The next section of the book focuses on the issues and challenges that inform our understanding of sustainability and the implementation of best practices. Sustainability is examined in a global context as the difficulties in enforcing international standards and protections in the state-centered international order are considered. The final part of the book engages in a more in-depth examination of several specific examples of sustainability in urban Africa.

Understanding the governance of complex social-ecological systems is vital in a world faced with rapid environmental change, conflicts over dwindling natural resources, stark disparities between rich and poor and the crises of sustainability. In 1992, world leaders adopted Agenda 21, the work program of the 1992 U.N. Conference on Environment and Development. This landmark event provided a political foundation and action items to facilitate the global transition toward sustainable development. The international community marked the tenth anniversary of this conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, in August 2002. Down to Earth, a component of the U.S. State Department's "Geographic Information for Sustainable Development" project for the World Summit, focuses on sub-Saharan Africa with examples drawn from case-study regions where the U.S. Agency for International Development and other agencies have broad experience. Although African countries are the geographic focus of the study, the report has broader applicability. Down to Earth summarizes the importance and applicability of geographic data for sustainable development and draws on experiences in African countries to examine how future sources and applications of geographic data could provide reliable support to decision-makers as they work towards sustainable development. Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: A, University of Buea, course: LLM International Law, language: English, abstract: This work has engaged in refining current understandings of the possibilities for attaining environmental conservation objectives amidst the incessant struggle for economic advancement in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It has examined the inability of the region to properly assimilate sustainable developmental tenets as reflected in the weaknesses of the several legislations that exist. The analysis was done through the concept of the respect for the Rule of Law and considered all relevant factors in terms of structural and administrative changes as well as reflected needs of the region, using Cameroon as a case study. Through the doctrinal research approach, it demonstrated in theory, the correlation between environmental protection and economic development. Looking at the legal, policy and institutional frameworks for environmental protection within SSA and Cameroon, it has examined the effect of the several legislations on business and trade, and therefore the overall upshot on economic development. The work has consequently scrutinized the possibility of reconciling environment and economic needs through green growth and a green economy. Amidst these difficulties associated with the concept of sustainable development, the question was therefore contemplated whether the pressing international calls for the restriction of the use of Africa’s resources could be tantamount to a disguised neo-colonialist move by former imperialist nations to retard the region’s advancement. The findings of the work therefore revealed outweighing difficulties associated with presently attaining green growth within the region and how its efforts continually stifle economic growth and development. The weaknesses inherently associated with the concept of sustainable development, which are strongly reflected in the prevailing African situation established some misgivings about the good-faith propagated by the ‘rich North’ towards the ‘poor South’. The work therefore suggested that the region should properly weigh its needs and goals in the light of the environment and the economy, and not rush into commitments it cannot live up to. To achieve this, it would have to integrate the opinions of all stakeholders into the decision-making process, from public to private and to individual levels.

The Strategies For Sustainably Program of IUCN works to strengthen strategic planning, policy and implementation skills aimed at sustainability development at global, national and local levels. Working with networks of strategy practitioners from member governments, partner institutions and NGOs the programme assists in the conceptual development and analysis of experience of strategies, the development of a range of strategic planning and action planning skills and improved methods of assessing human and ecosystem well being. This volume, originally published in 1996, reviews more than a decadeof experience for sustainability in 12 African countries. These countries provide examples of very different approaches to strategy development and implementation. Many have been involved in the development of the National Environmental Action Plans (NEAPs) at the request of the World Bank.
