Titling his book Journey to the End of the Century, SACHAL puts us in the macrocosm of the culture of the Soviet Union through the microcosm of his life there. It was a harsh and difficult beginning: homelessness, starvation, loneliness, diseases, and a painful existence. Never complaining, little Sacha learns how to use experience in the most magical ways. He recounts how he bravely endured, how to use the system of control to survive and fully be himself. This severe beginning prepared Sacha for the horrors of war, for the harshness and severity of the German prison camp and the French Resistance. This hero received the Croix de Guerre in France. He learned how to survive homelessness, severe cold, no food, cruelty, and brutality, and all with a smile, ingenuity, a song on his lips, or his gift of art. He was a genius with poetry in his soul that he later put on canvas. This unforgettable history speaks to us about how to use adversity and to triumph in a sometimes cruel, brutal world. It is a powerful story of how one man learned to be himself, gentle, powerful, resilient, uncomplaining of himself or others throughout this saga of his life. While his story is devastating, it is magnificent that a man such as Sacha can endure and learn from every adversity that being true to himself is the greatest response. This book is an unforgettable read and will enrich all those who venture into Journey to the End of the Century. For more information on Sacha, the man and his art, see www.sachal.com.

An urgently needed risk map of the many dangers that could derail Asia s growth and stability Since Marco Polo, the West has waited for the Asian Century. Today, the world believes that Century has arrived. Yet from China s slumping economy to war clouds over the South China Sea and from environmental devastation to demographic crisis, Asia s future is increasingly uncertain. Historian and geopolitical expert Michael Auslin argues that far from being a cohesive powerhouse, Asia is a fractured region threatened by stagnation and instability. Here, he provides a comprehensive account of the economic, military, political, and demographic risks that bedevil half of our world, arguing that Asia, working with the United States, has a unique opportunity to avert catastrophe but only if it acts boldly. Bringing together firsthand observations and decades of research, Auslin s provocative reassessment of Asia s future will be a must-read for industry and investors, as well as politicians and scholars, for years to come.

At the eve of the new millennium, teenager Alice Fell is alone on the streets of a strange city, friendless and without a pound to her name. She is not sure whether she's losing her mind, or whether she is called by inescapable visions to some special destiny. Along with a strange man named Stillman Waters, a retired occultist and spy – or so he claims – she finds herself pursued by strange creatures, and driven to steal the priceless "vanishing gem" that may contain the answers to the mysteries that plague her. A century earlier, consulting detective Sandford Blank, accompanied by his companion Roxanne Bonaventure, is called upon to solve a string of brutal murders on the eve of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. The police believe that Jack the Ripper is back on the streets, but Blank believes that this is a new killer, one whose motive is not violence or mayhem, but the discovery of the Holy Grail itself. And what of the corpse-white Huntsman and his unearthly hounds, who stalks the gaslit streets of London? And in the sixth century, Galaad, a young man driven by strange dreams of a lady in white and a tower of glass, travels to the court of the high king Artor in Londinium, abandoned stronghold of the Roman Empire in Britain. With Galaad’s bizarre dreams as their only guide, Artor and his loyal captains journey west to the Summerlands, there to face a threat that could spell the end of the new-forged kingdom of Britain. These three adventures—Dark Ages fantasy, gaslit mystery, and modern-day jewel heist—alternate until the barriers between the different times begin to break down, and our heroes confront the secrets that connect the Grail, the Glass Tower, and the vanishing gem. And lurking behind it all, the entity known only as Omega.

Lorene Cary’s grandmother moves in, and everything changes: day-to-day life, family relationships, the Nana she knew—even their shared past. From cherished memories of weekends she spent as a child with her indulgent Nana to the reality of the year she spent “ladysitting” her now frail grandmother, Lorene Cary journeys through stories of their time together and five generations of their African American family. Brilliantly weaving a narrative of her complicated yet transformative relationship with Nana—a fierce, stubborn, and independent woman, who managed a business until she was 100—Cary looks at Nana’s impulse to control people and fate, from the early death of her mother and oppression in the Jim Crow South to living on her own in her New Jersey home. Cary knew there might be some reckonings to come. Nana was a force: Her obstinacy could come out in unanticipated ways—secretly getting a driver’s license to show up her husband, carrying on a longtime feud with Cary’s father. But Nana could also be devoted: to Nana’s father, to black causes, and—Cary had thought—to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Facing the inevitable end raises tensions, with Cary drawing on her spirituality and Nana consoling herself with late-night sweets and the loyalty of caregivers. When Nana doubts Cary’s dedication, Cary must go deeper into understanding this complicated woman. In Ladysitting, Cary captures the ruptures, love, and, perhaps, forgiveness that can occur in a family as she bears witness to her grandmother’s 101 vibrant years of life.

With this tome, physician James G.M. Ramsey assembled the most comprehensive account of Tennessee's history as a territory and fledgling state that we know of. Covering the years 1769 to 1800, these 743 pages address each of the major political and governmental episodes, with their principal participants, in the formative period of the Volunteer State. To produce this achievement, the author worked assiduously in the archives of Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia. He was also an indefatigable collector of original documents relating to the founding of Tennessee, a number of which appear here in transcription or facsimile. Additionally, since the author was born in 1797, he was able to embellish the narrative with information collected from conversations with such founding fathers as James White, Charles McClung, and his maternal grandfather, John McKnitt Alexander, secretary of the Mecklenburg Convention of 1775.
