I know, it doesn't seem like the world is getting any better, but I can assure you it does. Despite turmoil and breakdown in society and new populist leaders that frighten us we are heading towards a brighter future. This time is the last gasp of an age of selfishness and short-sightedness. It's difficult to see the big picture when we are in the middle of a storm, but a storm will always calm. The world does not stand still, changes occur everywhere, in the outside world and in the inside world. This book merges both worlds. First and foremost, change must come from within. This book is about how a change in consciousness has the potential to create a world full of happiness, hope, and optimism. We already see more and more flashes of light in society, and this book points out some of it. The book was first published in print in Norway in autumn 2016. Here are two reviews from Norwegian readers: «Thanks for the wonderful book you have written! I read it from cover to cover and felt that it did something to me. It lifts your mind and gives positivity and hope. It is easy to read and fluent in form. Truly one of the best I've read in a long time! I am impressed! I would like to introduce the book to someone else, but cannot imagine lending out my own copy, so I'd like to buy two more.» - Irene H. Aune «Congratulations! You have done an excellent job of publishing this book - a valuable book that touches the core of humanity's relationship to itself, nature, and the spiritual dimension. Seen from my point of view, the reader gets a solid dose of ammunition for contemplation and requiring personal stance towards big questions. Recommended!» - Audun Toemmeraas Last year one of the readers told me she was so excited about the book that she wanted to give one to the Norwegian prime minister. And she did, but my hope is that ordinary people read this book, because real change does not come from above. For the first time, it's now published in English. This edition is revised and updated early 2017. From the back cover: FROM BREAKDOWN TO BREAKTHROUGH People, Mankind and Mother Earth is plagued by countless problems and crises. Everything from overspending, exploitation, corruption, populist leaders and terrorism to economic differences, poverty, health problems, and loneliness. On top of that, we have huge environmental problems. These problems can only be taken by their root if we are going to get lasting solutions, otherwise, we only treat the symptoms. By identifying the core causes to our manmade problems and crises, we can change these «vicious circles» we have entangled ourselves into and create «golden circles». Even if we see breakdowns in the society, there are also several breakthroughs, which don't receive the same amount of attention. This book seeks to reverse this, by offering several «new» thoughts, referrals to solutions, and ways to improve our lives and society. This book is therefore very much a book of resource and solution, with a host of references to people, companies, websites, organizations and much more that point to new ways of living and organizing our lives and communities. The human being is under development and are now having growing pains in form of our global crises. By shifting the focus from problems to solutions, and from symptoms to causes, we would be well on our way to create a new world to the benefit for ourselves and future generations. About the author Henning Jon Grini was born in Bergen, Norway in 1966. All his adult life he has been concerned with the big questions in life. In this compilation of David Suzuki's latest thoughts and writings, the renowned scientist, author, and broadcaster explores the myriad environmental challenges the world faces and their interconnected causes. In doing so, Suzuki shows that understanding the causes—and recognizing that everything in nature, including us, is interconnected—is crucial to restoring hope for a better future. The solutions are there, he argues; we just need the will to act together to bring about change. Everything Under the Sun delves into such provocative topics as the difference between human hunters and other predators, the lessons we must learn from the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan and the subsequent meltdown of the nuclear reactors, and our dependence on the sun for all of our food and energy—indeed for our very lives. Suzuki also considers the many positive steps people are making today. And he doesn't shy away from controversial opinion, especially when it comes to taking on those who stand in the way of resolving serious issues like climate change. Underpinning it all is the recognition that we are blessed to live on a planet that gives us everything we require to live, under a sun that gives us the energy we need to produce food and transport and modern conveniences. But we must protect what we have if we want to survive and prosper.

The first book to offer a proven, fast, inexpensive, and practical way to cut greenhouse gas emissions and prevent catastrophic climate change. As climate change quickly approaches a series of turning points that guarantee disastrous outcomes, a solution is hiding in plain sight. Several countries have already replaced fossil fuels with low-carbon energy sources, and done so rapidly, in one to two decades. By following their methods, we could decarbonize the global economy by midcentury, replacing fossil fuels even while world energy use continues to rise. But so far we have lacked the courage to really try. In this clear-sighted and compelling book, Joshua Goldstein and Staffan Qvist explain how clean energy quickly replaced fossil fuels in such places as Sweden, France, South Korea, and Ontario. Their people enjoyed prosperity and growing energy use in harmony with the natural environment. They didn't do this through personal sacrifice, nor through 100 percent renewables, but by using them in combination with an energy source the Swedes call käkraft, hundreds of times safer and cleaner than coal. Clearly written and beautifully illustrated, yet footnoted with extensive technical references, Goldstein and Qvist's book will provide a new touchstone in discussions of climate change. It could spark a shift in world energy policy that, in the words of Steven Pinker's foreword, literally saves the world.

A Wall Street Journal and Publishers Weekly bestseller America's best days should still lie ahead. Here’s the realistic and definitive path to get us there. The future doesn’t just happen. It’s a choice that we can and must help determine. But as our deeply divided nation reels from converging crises and seemingly intractable discord, where do we begin when the stakes are unfathomably high? With multiple possible futures before us, Americans need to understand the specific consequences of our immediate choices, seize the opportunity to renew the nation's promise, and set the stage to benefit current and future generations. If we chart our course correctly, we can emerge from our current troubles with a brighter future in reach of all Americans. Based on decades of expertise in envisioning and articulating policy options, Paul Laudicina lays out four vastly different visions for America's future. In Roadmap to a Brighter Future, he outlines why the best version of America will only come about if the correct actions are taken now—and outlines the ten steps needed to decisively tackle our most pervasive problems and address critical priorities. Laudicina, who led one of the world's most-respected management consultancies and has worked as a longtime senior advisor to Joe Biden, also integrates the uncensored views and fresh ideas of dozens of the world's leading thinkers, CEOs, scientists, government leaders, and innovators, to show why optimism about the United States is not only warranted, but crucial.

As the United States continues its slow climb out of the Great Recession, it is important to focus on new directions to improve the standard of living in America. This book explores what is behind a faltering standard of living in the United States since the early 1980s and what can be done to restore it. The book is uniquely valuable in going beyond mainstream thinking about how to restore prosperity. Economics has traditionally equated economic growth (increases in per capita income) with improvements in quality of life and the standard of living. This book questions that assumption. The different chapters in the book show the standard of living as being more than income, to include many non-market aspects such as access to public goods (roads, clean air and water, schools, parks, and museums), intangible aspects of quality of life such as equity and a sense of community, and broadly based economic opportunities. This means that improving the standard of living is a multi-dimensional challenge rather than one of solely increasing aggregate demand, productivity, or GDP. This book embodies a pluralistic approach and draws on the expertise of a wide array of thinkers. The intended audience is for various courses offered in economics, sociology, political science, public policy programs, and in environmental and ecological studies.
