The world economy in which we are living poses challenges that lead to a realization that 'more of the same' will be difficult to sustain. This provides an illustration that, in order to create new or modified knowledge practices, strengthen customer relationships and thus positively influence customer satisfaction, organizations must be flexible in configuring (combining) knowledge and knowledge structures in a way that is appropriate for delivering value to the customer. It must simultaneously develop effective strategies for updating the knowledge of its staff members necessary for underpinning the creation and delivery of appropriate knowledge services. Thus, unlearning (forgetting) becomes a critical means for organizational success. The ECKM community of scholars has already initiated dialogue that links its particular strengths to innovation issues. This conference aims to further that dialogue by attracting leading edge work that leverages the ECKM community's in-depth understanding of learning and unlearning to better understand knowledge management. Our aim is to stimulate breakthrough research streams linking learning, unlearning and knowledge management. How can organizations tailor, use, and extend techniques and tools from knowledge management for improving their business practices and processes? Building upon existing work on knowledge management (KM) and organizational learning, the conference will promote interdisciplinary approaches from computer science and information systems, business, management and organization science as well as cognitive science. Emphasis will be put on systematic learning from experience, KM tools and KM success factors. A special interest belongs to knowledge management initiatives which are lightweight (i.e., do not place considerable additional burden on users and KM experts), allow an incremental adoption (i.e., do not require large up-front investment before any return of investment is at least visible), and are flexible regarding frequent changes in experts and topics. Continuing the success of the ECKM conference series since 2000, the 2015 conference will provide an international communication forum bringing together academia and industry for discussing the progress made and addressing the challenges faced by continuous learning in knowledge-intensive organizations.

It examines how EU regional policy, endowed with substantial financial resources, influences the comparatively weakly endowed EU higher education policy. In less than a decade Finland went from being perhaps one of the least knowledge-based economies to becoming the sole most embraced one, subsequently heralding it to be a model example of not only Europe’s but the world’s ‘new economy’. During the twentieth-first century, Finland has three times to date ranked number one in the World’s Economic Forum’s (WEF) Competitiveness Index, alongside achieving an astonishing close second to Sweden in the World Bank’s Knowledge Economic Index (KEI). On these grounds, Finland’s recent development towards a knowledge-based economy has indeed captured the international spotlight, and justly the attention of economic policy-makers across the world. To this day in age, knowledge has irrefutably become the driving force behind economic growth and social development, with exogenous factors particularly that of globalization playing enormous roles in the acceleration of the diffusion and the application of knowledge. Perhaps, not better put then in the trivial words of Bill Clinton “in today’s knowledge-based economy, what you earn depends on what you learn,”5such words do certainly substantiate the importance of knowledge and innovation in today’s ‘new economy’. Thus is seems, successful economies and societies will be those who can adapt to the rapid demands of globalization, where the need of countries to be more flexible, creative, innovative, and welcoming to the winds of change, have been more critical than it has ever been before. Advancement in information and communication technologies (ICTs) has often been seen as one method of achieving a more knowledge-based economy, as development in ICTs seem to provide new opportunities in product specialization, improved productivity, and sustainable growth.

This book addresses the recent impact of the ‘knowledge-based economy’ as an economic ‘imaginary’ and as a set of real economic developments on education, and especially higher education in Europe, including educational strategies and policies such as those of the Bologna process on a European scale. The contributors come from various disciplinary backgrounds (education, history, linguistics, sociology) but share a commitment to trans-disciplinary research and a view that changes in educational policy and practice can productively be researched with a focus on discourse. The papers in this collection apply a range of approaches to discourse analysis, as well as narrative policy analysis, and several contributors use a cultural political economy perspective which incorporates a version of critical discourse analysis.
