The Knowledge Level In Expert Systems: Conversations and Commentary deals with artificial intelligence, cognitive science, qualitative models, problem solving architectures, construction of knowledge bases, machine learning integration, knowledge sharing or reusability, and mapping problem-solving methods. The book tackles two opposing dogmas: first, that control is generic so is in the inference engine; and two, deep and surface knowledge are different so deep knowledge belongs in a performance system. The text also explains how to use SPARK, a selection method, in approaching the task features that can be used to select or construct the problem-solving method suitable for the task. An alternative method to SPARK starts with an analysis of the domain model and a classification using primitive inference steps. The book also adds that expert problem solving is a form of qualitative modeling that connects other expert systems and engineering. The text then describes very large knowledge bases, particularly, the volume of which knowledge bases can be integrated with expert systems, coherence maintenance, and use/neutral representation of knowledge. Task analysis and method selection focuses on SPARK; how theories about the relation between task features and expert system solutions can be empirically validated. The book also enumerates the benefits and limitations of a generic task approach, and how various modules with their specific internal architectures can be integrated. Programmers, computer engineers, computer technicians, and computer instructors dealing with many aspects of computers such as programming, networking, engineering or design will find the book highly useful.

The Database and Expert Systems Applications - DEXA - conferences are dedi cated to providing an international forum for the presentation of applications in the database and expert systems field, for the exchange of ideas and experiences, and for defining requirements for the future systems in these fields. After the very promising DEXA 90 in Vienna, Austria, we hope to have successfully established wjth this year's DEXA 91 a stage where scientists from diverse fields interested in application-oriented research can present and discuss their work. This year there was a total of more than 250 submitted papers from 28 different countries, in all continents. Only 98 of the papers could be accepted. The collection of papers in these proceedings offers a cross-section of the issues facing the area of databases and expert systems, i.e., topics of basic research interest on one hand and questions occurring when developing applications on the other. Major credit for the success of the conference goes to all of our colleagues who submitted papers for consideration and to those who have organized and chaired the panel sessions. Structural safety of industrial systems and components raises a steadily growing public, scientific and engineering interest, and causes permanent development of methods and techniques used for its assessment. In addition to the well established engineering methods, applied in the field, several new methods and tools have emerged recently. Among them, the most novel ones are probably those related to expert system applica tions, appearing as an important possible improvement of the current engineering practice. The issue has been addressed by the international course EXPERT SYSTEMS IN STRUCTURAL SAFETY ASSESSMENT organized by MPA Stuttgart and JRC Ispra (Stuttgart, October 2-4, 1989), and the proceedings of the course are contained in this volume of the Lecture Notes ill Engineering. The contributions (invited lectures) tackle the issues usually confronting developers and users of expert systems applied in structural engineering, i.e. in structural safety and integrity assessment. Both the book and the course are a combination of a tutorial and of presentation of the current achievements in the field. Starting from the basic elements of expert systems (knowledge based systems), the book should "guide" the reader up to the applications in various particular sub-domains.
