Contemporary Japanese Architecture presents a clear and comprehensive overview of the historical and cultural framework that informs the work of all Japanese architects, as an introduction to an in-depth investigation of the challenges now occupying the contemporary designers who will be the leaders of the next generation. It separates out the young generation of Japanese architects from the crowded, distinguished, multi-generational field they seek to join, and investigates the topics that absorb them, and the critical issues they face within the new economic reality of Japan and a shifting global order. Salient points in the text are illustrated by beautiful, descriptive images provided by the architects and from the extensive collection of the author. By combining illustrations with timelines and graphics to explain complex ideas, the book is accessible to any student seeking to understand contemporary Japanese architecture.

"In addition to highlighting the human benefits of built environments which relate to particular place, time and being, many of the Japanese buildings examined illustrate practical strategies for revealing these universal parameters which are equally applicable beyond Japan. It is suggested that wider use of some of these approaches could not only help to sustain both environmental and cultural identities against the homogenising effects of globalisation, but also has the potential to heighten our appreciation of the peculiar condition of being here now."--Jacket.

The Architectural Documents series sees the publication of the first monograph on one of the most extraordinary figures on the contemporary architectural scene, Toyo Ito of Japan (b. 1941). Since the 1970s Ito has been carrying out research into building materials, light and space, research which has led him to design buildings that he himself has defined as "non material": aerial structures, fluid and permeable spaces which avoid rigid compositional geometries. Over the years Ito has gradually simplified his language, and his work, the structure of which has increasingly lost importance, can be studied as a series of variations on the layering of the facade. His obsession with lightness and transparency are expressed to the full in the most important work of his creative career, the Sendai Mediatheque (1995-2001). This book, with an exceptional body of illustrations, presents the Japanese architects most significant projects, starting with the Aluminium House of 1970-1 through to the most recent project for the Mahler 4 office block in Amsterdam (2000-1). The appendix includes a complete list of Toyo Ito's works, a selection of his writings, as well as a biographical summary and up-to-date bibliography.

Post Western Histories Of Architecture written by Pilar Maria Guerrieri and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-06-23 with Architecture categories.

This book seeks to provide an alternative post-Western perspective to the history of contemporary architecture. It puts forward detailed critical analyses of various areas of the world, including Europe, Latin America, Africa, China, Australia, India and Japan, where particular movements of architecture have developed as active ‘political acts’. The authors focus on a broad spectrum of countries, architectures and architects that have developed a design approach closely linked to the building context. The concept of context is broad and includes various economic, social, cultural, political and natural aspects. In all cases, the architects selected in this book have chosen to view context as an opportunity. However, each architect has considered certain specific aspects of context: some have been very attentive to the social context, others to material aspects or typological issues, and still others to aspects related to political visions or economic factors. The analysis critically highlights interesting, creative and respectful design approaches towards local conditions, such as sustainability in Nordic Europe, climate-conscious design in Africa, and the ‘bottom-up’ sensitivity of India. The book’s main aim is to retrace, through both theoretical arguments and case studies, the debate that focuses on politics and the environment. Thanks to its valuable examples, this book strives to make a conscious contribution to establishing a bulwark against the current ‘flattening-out’ processes that architecture is experiencing. This book will be of relevance to researchers, teachers and students interested in the history of architecture, architecture and planning, and postcolonial studies.
