Enabling Urban Alternatives written by Jens Kaae Fisker and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-12-08 with Social Science categories.

This book asks how thinking, governing, performing, and producing the urban differently can assist in enabling the creation of alternative urban futures. It is a timely response to the ongoing crises and pressing challenges that inhabitants of cities, towns, and villages worldwide are faced with in the midst of what has been widely dubbed as ‘an urban age’. Starting from the premise that current urban development patterns are unsustainable in every sense of the word, the book explores how alternative patterns can be pursued by the wide variety of actors – from governments and international institutions to slum-dwellers and social movements – involved in the on-going production of our shared urban condition. The challenges addressed include exclusion and segregation; persisting poverty and increasing inequality; urban sprawl and changing land use patterns; and the spatial frames of urban policy. As such the book appeals to urban scholars, policy makers, activists, and others concerned with shaping the future of our cities and of urban life in general. Additionally, it is of interest to students in urban planning, architecture and design, human geography, urban sociology, and related fields.

Beyond Capitalism written by Jeff Shantz and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-04-25 with Political Science categories.

Capitalism as a global system barely allows the needs of the majority of the world's population to be met. Whether from an industrialized country such as the US or from South Africa, the need for an alternative can be felt all over the world. It is clear nowadays that, due to the non-democratic nature and inadequacies of capitalism, another system must take its place. Such a process has already begun through the cooperative movement, which this book examines along with other initiatives. Featuring essays by international scholars and activists from various spheres of the anti-capitalist left, the work features many examples from the north and the south, to cover both the historically-advanced and late capitalist economies. It discusses such initiatives as participatory economics, the Mondragon experience, worker cooperatives in Europe and Latin America, solidarity economy in South Africa, and more. Written in an accessible manner, Beyond Capitalism will be an invaluable resource for any student of social movements and political thought and for anyone looking for alternative to today's ongoing systemic crises.

Bringing together scholars from varying perspectives, this book examines the value of Hegel's thought for understanding and assessing capitalism, both as encountered by Hegel himself and in forms it takes today. The contributors consider Hegel's complex and multifaceted appraisal of modern market societies, which he understands variously as a condition for a proper account of individual freedom, the framework for a productive account of social interdependency, and the breeding ground for a host of social pathologies concerning individual consumption, labor conditions, and disparities in wealth between the rich and poor. Hegel's ideas about the topic are situated in the context of work by other important thinkers, including Adam Smith, Immanuel Kant, J. G. Fichte, Karl Marx, Max Weber, and Theodor Adorno, along with contemporary social and economic theorists. Demonstrating the value of Hegel's philosophy for addressing issues pertaining to capitalism today, the essays bring insight to contemporary concerns such as resurgent neoliberalism, economic globalization, the subordination of ever more spheres of human life to the logic of economic imperatives, and the adequacy of models of utility maximization for comprehending contemporary market societies.

In what may well rank as the finest political and intellectual history of the twentieth century, the late J. L. Talmon explores the origins of the schism within European society between the totalitarians of Right and Left as well as the split between an acceptance of the historical national community as the natural political and social framework and the vision of a socialist society achieved by a universal revolutionary breakthrough. This, the third and final volume of Talmon's history of the modern world, brings to bear the resources of his incisive scholarship to examine the workings of the ironies of totalitarianism as well as the resources of democracy.

Urban Transport XXI contains the proceedings of the 21st International Conference on Urban Transport and the Environment. The series of annual conferences organised by the Wessex Institute was first held in 1995. Transportation in urban areas, with its related environmental and social impacts, is a topic of significant concern for policymakers in both municipal and central government and for the urban citizens who need effective and efficient transport systems. Urban transport systems require considerable studies to devise and then safeguard their operational use, maintenance and safety. Transportation systems produce significant environmental impacts and can enhance or degrade the quality of life in urban centres. Clearly the challenge of providing effective and efficient transport systems in urban settings remains an acute concern, with financial, political and environmental constraints limiting the ability of transport system planners and operators to deliver the high quality outcomes expected by the public. Papers cover such topics as: Urban Transport Planning and Management; Urban Transport Strategies; Public Transport Systems; Environmental Aspects; Economic and Social Impact; Safety and Security; Travel Behaviour Studies; Customer Satisfaction; Transportation Modelling and Simulation; Infrastructure Development; Intelligent and Advanced Transport Systems; Transportation Integration; City Logistics; Resilience and Inter-modal Transport Systems; Mass Transport Strategies; Social Impacts; Freight Transport; Railway Systems; Transport Governance and Administration; Port and City; Mobility and Public Space; Life Cycle Management.

Language Culture And Identity written by Torben Vestergaard and has been published by Aalborg University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Are people's identities an effect of their membership of linguistic, national regional and ethnic groups, and does such group membership create problems for "inter-cultural communication"? These questions are addressed in this collection of nine papers from the Third Annual Conference of the Nordic Network for Intercultural Communications. Answers are drawn from general, theoretical, pedagogical and empirical points of view. They agree on one fundamental issue: the language-identity-cutlure complex, dynamic and overlapping rather than static and isomorphic. This leads the contributions to touch upon the political implications of a relational and dynamic view on language, culture, human rights and regional identities in a Europe with crumbling national boundaries. Among the topics are whether a person's identity is bound to a certain place and whether it is constant. Others discuss cross-cultural communication, a post-structuralist stance, different values ascribed to words and actions; the ability of people to interact with different cultures; the cross-cultural language link in language teaching; what language choice says about people and their attitudes towards each other when more than one language is available; and a recognition that most of us are members of several cultural groups, which can create incompatible values and attitudes.

The Psychology Of Marxian Socialism written by Henry de Man and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-02-18 with Political Science categories.

This classic work on the psychology of socialism carries for this edition a slightly refurbished title. By calling it The Psychology of Marxian Socialism, the work is sharply distinguished from an earlier work of the same title (written at a much earlier time) by Gustave LeBon. This book was written in the post-Bolshevik revolutionary era, at the height of the Weimar democracy in Germany; LeBon’s represents a fin de siècle effort, reflecting earlier concerns in socialist theory. De Man’s work derives its strength from a close and hard look at how socialism operated in one country. It is probably one of the greatest such efforts in the post-World War I period.
