With the emergence and structuring of the Lucanian ethnos during the fourth century BC, a network of cult places, set apart from habitation spaces, was created at the crossroads of the most important communication routes of ancient Lucania. These sanctuaries became centers of social and political aggregation of the local communities: a space in which the community united for all the social manifestations that, in urban societies, were usually performed within the city space. With a detailed analysis of the archaeological record, this study traces the historical and archaeological narrative of Lucanian cult places from their creation to the Late Republican Age, which saw the incorporation of southern Italy into the Roman state. By placing the sanctuaries within their territorial, political, social, and cultural context, Battiloro offers insight into the diachronic development of sacred architecture and ritual customs in ancient Lucania. The author highlights the role of material evidence in constructing the significance of sanctuaries in the historical context in which they were used, and crucial new evidence from the most recent archaeological investigations is explored in order to define dynamics of contact and interaction between Lucanians and Romans on the eve of the Roman conquest.

Una guerra che ebbe tra i protagonisti un brigante e un generale, Carmine Crocco e Emilio Pallavicini di Priola. Uno spavaldo erede del mondo feudale contro un baldanzoso aristocratico di spada, l'ultimo esercito dell'antico regime contro il primo esercito nazionale. Una storia che ancora oggi suscita emozioni e divide. Sulle rive dell'Ofanto, nel Mezzogiorno italiano, un secolo e mezzo fa si svolse una grande sfida. Da una parte c'era il brigante, Carmine Crocco. Pastore, militare, bandito di professione, divenne il capobanda più famoso nelle campagne meridionali dopo il 1860. Alla guida del brigantaggio filoborbonico, sperimentò forme di guerriglia che avranno fortuna nel XX secolo, anticipandone gli aspetti politici e una organizzazione criminale su larga scala. Dall'altra parte, il generale, Emilio Pallavicini di Priola, aristocratico sabaudo, militare esperto in operazioni speciali e al comando di reparti schierati nella campagna contro il brigantaggio. L'ufficiale era parte dell'antica aristocrazia di spada e interpretò la conclusione di un processo secolare, in cui i ruoli militari passavano definitivamente ai professionisti della guerra. Nel primo decennio dell'Italia unita furono questi due uomini, lontanissimi per origine e formazione, i protagonisti più conosciuti della guerra per il Mezzogiorno. Carmine Pinto racconta le loro 'vite parallele' e, attraverso queste, gli episodi, i luoghi, le battaglie e le leggende, la guerra tra il primo esercito nazionale e l'ultimo dell'antico regime, fino allo scontro finale e al sorprendente epilogo delle loro esistenze.
