Patients with tracheotomies are managed by a wide variety of healthcare professionals. As a result, information regarding best practice is scattered throughout the medical literature and can be difficult to identify and implement in the clinical setting. Tracheotomy Management: A Multidisciplinary Approach is a practical review of all tracheotomy procedures and acute and chronic tracheotomy care. It combines evidence-based practice and expert opinion to create an invaluable hands-on guide for any healthcare provider managing patients with tracheotomies. Each chapter is authored by at least two different subspecialists, contains case studies with real-life examples of problematic clinical scenarios, and is enhanced by high quality images. The rationale for different approaches is discussed to guide the decision-making process. Written and edited by tracheotomy experts from a wide variety of disciplines, Tracheotomy Management: A Multidisciplinary Approach is essential reading for anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists and critical care and emergency physicians.

Tracheostomy tubes provide a stable airway for ventilator support and allow access to the lower respiratory tract for secretion management. Indications for placement of a tracheostomy tube vary from relief of upper airway obstruction to ventilation for protracted acute respiratory failure to a chronic neuromuscular illness. This book focuses on the prospective practices, management, and potential complications of a tracheostomy. Some of the topics discussed include maintenance of a long term tracheostomy; open versus percutaneous tracheostomy; management of tube displacement; the use of a tracheostomy in burn patients; and the role of ultrasounds in a percutaneous tracheostomy.

Comprehensive Tracheostomy Care is a resource developed by the UK National Tracheostomy Safety Project (NTSP) to help promote and facilitate the safe management of tracheostomies and laryngectomies. The scope includes hospital in-patient specialist areas such as critical care, head & neck units and specialist wards, but it is also applicable to more general wards, outpatient and community settings. The majority of the content is for adult patients, complemented by a dedicated paediatric chapter developed with colleagues from Great Ormond Street Hospital. The manual is a ‘one stop shop’ covering all aspects of tracheostomy and laryngectomy management. It includes multidisciplinary resources from surgical, anaesthetic, nursing, intensive care and allied health backgrounds, along with guidance from key UK stakeholder organisations. Emergency guidance has been reviewed and endorsed by relevant Royal Colleges, national organisations and patient groups. It takes into account many national and international guidelines, policies and resources. It has been developed by consulting as widely as possible, across traditional professional boundaries using expertise and existing guidance from around the world, including the Global Tracheostomy Collaborative (www.globaltrach.org). Relevant existing resources are brought together coherently, with new resources presented in easy-to-follow text, illustrations, photographs and innovative linked e-learning and interactive resources.

The word tracheostomy often evokes feelings of fear and anxiety in patients. The thought of a hole in the front of the neck is overwhelming, especially in connection with a cancer diagnosis. It is hard to imagine returning to a normal life after this procedure, and contemplating the care required can be daunting. These concerns are natural. However, while having a tracheostomy can be life altering, it is not debilitating. The tracheotomy procedure is performed fairly commonly in head and neck cancer patients. In this procedure, a hole is surgically created in the front of the neck and into the trachea (windpipe) to establish an airway in the neck. This hole, or stoma, is referred to as a tracheostomy. Once the stoma is created, it is maintained by inserting a tracheostomy tube. Becoming informed about the initial procedure and management of your tracheostomy will help alleviate your anxieties and fears. That is the objective of this handbook. It will assist in the transition from the hospital to home and provide you with information you will need to manage your tracheostomy appropriately.

A further individual chapter is devoted to the methods of airway management that may be used during PT. Detailed attention is also paid to medical and nursing management inside and outside hospital, to quality of life issues in tracheostomized patients, and to the problem of informed consent.
