When aerospace engineer and recent widower Frank Morton wins an $86 million lottery jackpot, he decides to retire and devote his time to a life-long interest in ancient mysteries. Coincidently, an old Viet Nam buddy shows up with a mysterious black sphere inscribed with what appear to be Maya hieroglyphics. Intrigued, Frank convinces his buddy and two other friends, an anthropologist and a newspaper researcher, to help him investigate the origin and purpose of the sphere. Their search takes Frank and his friends on a journey from Seattle to the secret military installations of Nevada and on to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. Along the way, they become involved in a murder investigation and attract the unwanted attention of government agents, Mexican Federales and an ancient Maya priest. They also stumble across a three thousand year old secret that suggests a possible link between the shamans of Mesoamerica and a race of alien explorers.

Visual Complex Analysis written by Tristan Needham and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Mathematics categories.

This radical first course on complex analysis brings a beautiful and powerful subject to life by consistently using geometry (not calculation) as the means of explanation. Aimed at undergraduate students in mathematics, physics, and engineering, the book's intuitive explanations, lack of advanced prerequisites, and consciously user-friendly prose style will help students to master the subject more readily than was previously possible. The key to this is the book's use of new geometric arguments in place of the standard calculational ones. These geometric arguments are communicated with the aid of hundreds of diagrams of a standard seldom encountered in mathematical works. A new approach to a classical topic, this work will be of interest to students in mathematics, physics, and engineering, as well as to professionals in these fields.

Chases And Escapes written by Paul J. Nahin and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-07-22 with Mathematics categories.

We all played tag when we were kids. What most of us don't realize is that this simple chase game is in fact an application of pursuit theory, and that the same principles of games like tag, dodgeball, and hide-and-seek are also at play in military strategy, high-seas chases by the Coast Guard, and even romantic pursuits. In Chases and Escapes, Paul Nahin gives us the first complete history of this fascinating area of mathematics, from its classical analytical beginnings to the present day. Drawing on game theory, geometry, linear algebra, target-tracking algorithms, and much more, Nahin also offers an array of challenging puzzles with their historical background and broader applications. Chases and Escapes includes solutions to all problems and provides computer programs that readers can use for their own cutting-edge analysis. Now with a gripping new preface on how the Enola Gay escaped the shock wave from the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, this book will appeal to anyone interested in the mathematics that underlie pursuit and evasion. Putting Two And Two Together written by Burkard Polster and has been published by American Mathematical Society this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-12-10 with Mathematics categories.

Putting Two and Two Together is a humorous and quirky collection of unusual, ingenious, and beautiful morsels of mathematics. Authors Burkard Polster (YouTube's Mathologer) and Marty Ross delve into mathematical puzzles and phenomena in engaging stories featuring current events, sports, and history, many flavored with a distinctive bit of Australiana. Each chapter ends with “puzzles to ponder” that will spur further reflection. These stories were written for a general audience, and originally appeared in the Maths Masters column in The Age newspaper. The book offers mathematical entertainment for curious readers of all ages, and assumes a minimum of mathematical background. Polster and Ross are masters of the genre this book represents: a cornucopia of offerings, from across the mathematical spectrum. Their articles are entertaining, captivating, and informative, and will appeal to everyone from interested amateurs to old pros. On top of all that, the prose is clear, concise and a lot of fun—happily with a charmingly Aussie flavo(u)r. Crack the spine and enjoy! —Michael Berg, Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles The American Mathematical Society must be congratulated on publishing a singularly amusing synthesis of cultural anthropology coupled with mathematical entertainment. —Tushar Das, University of Wisconsin–La Crosse Polster and Ross are as good as the original master, Martin Gardner! They are also as good as that other great popularizer of mathematics, Ian Stewart, who took up Gardner's mantle, and as good as Douglas Hofstedter, who also followed in Gardner's footsteps as popularizers of mathematics within regular columns in “Scientific American”, and elsewhere. I recommend this new book very highly! Like Poster and Ross's first collection of columns, it is one that you can happily read from cover to cover, or dip into at any random point, and find treasures. You will then often return, savouring, and often laughing, while also learning, and responding to thoughtful challenges! —John Gough, Deakin University, Geelong, Australia

The Early Mathematics of Leonhard Euler gives an article-by-article description of Leonhard Euler's early mathematical works; the 50 or so mathematical articles he wrote before he left St. Petersburg in 1741 to join the Academy of Frederick the Great in Berlin. These early pieces contain some of Euler's greatest work, the Konigsberg bridge problem, his solution to the Basel problem, and his first proof of the Euler-Fermat theorem. It also presents important results that we seldom realize are due to Euler; that mixed partial derivatives are (usually) equal, our f(x) f(x) notation, and the integrating factor in differential equations. The books shows how contributions in diverse fields are related, how number theory relates to series, which, in turn, relate to elliptic integrals and then to differential equations. There are dozens of such strands in this beautiful web of mathematics. At the same time, we see Euler grow in power and sophistication, from a young student when at 18 he published his first work on differential equations (a paper with a serious flaw) to the most celebrated mathematician and scientist of his time. It is a portrait of the world's most exciting mathematics between 1725 and 1741, rich in technical detail, woven with connections within Euler's work and with the work of other mathematicians in other times and places, laced with historical context.

Handbook Of Famous Plane Curves Using Mathematica written by Steven Tan and has been published by Steven Tan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-15 with Mathematics categories.

Inspired by the Famous Curves Index of the award-winning website by MacTutor History of Mathematics archive maintained by John J. O'Connor and Edmund F. Robertson and hosted by the University of St Andrews, the author wrote this handbook of famous plane curves using Mathematica® as a tool to graph, animate, calculate and to construct derived curves from given ones. Some constructions are extremely difficult to draw by hands, especially those involve numerical integration can be performed with ease with Mathematica®. Even for some simple curves before the invention of computer, drawing them by hands might take a long time. To borrow the words of Rudy Rucker (author of The Fourth Dimension): "if the only thing you're going to be remembered for in 300 years is one single curve, then you don't mind spending a year or two in getting it right!" Plane curves had been studied since antiquity. However, the general theory of plane curves began to be developed only after the invention of Cartesian coordinates by Descartes in the early 1600s. The discovery of calculus in the 17th century led to the study of more complicated plane curves. The methods of calculus, in particular integration, provides solution of finding the arc length and area of a plane curve. Plane curves are of historical interest. It could be said that significant part of classical mathematics deal with them. Most books on history of mathematics include information on various plane curves. Plane curves remain a source of inspiration and a topic of research to this day. Whenever it is applicable the author mentions some research papers in which the curves are used for applications in modern science and technology.
