Collective action by firms is a central societal phenomenon, whereby firms set up specific devices, referred to by the authors as ‘Firms’ Collective Action Devices’ (FCADs). This timely book shows how the phenomenon has been studied in a variety of academic disciplines, including history, political science, economics, sociology, management and organization theory, and how FCADs are used in lobbying, and to tackle issues such as those related to the environment and human rights. The book uses the concepts of meta-organization and heterarchy to give a fascinating overview of firms’ collective action, investigate some little-known aspects of the phenomenon, and examine the impact of FCADs on the economy and democracy.

Global Business Associations written by Karsten Ronit and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-26 with Political Science categories.

Global business tends to be perceived as a number of individual but powerful multinational corporations, capable of controlling markets and influencing political decisions; in fact, global business is highly organized through a plethora of associations that bring together competing companies and conflicting national businesses. Indeed, global business associations have a long history and, with accelerated globalization, further opportunities emerge for unified business action. This book fills a significant gap in the current literature, examining the pivotal role of global business associations and providing a concise and accessible overview of their different functions in a range of institutional contexts. Beginning by clarifying the concept of global business associations, the author puts their role into a historical and contemporary context in which their economic, social and political functions are sketched. Their historical origin is outlined, including the proliferation of global associations in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. He then moves on to explore and analyse the different types of actors, explaining key categories and their place in the organization of global business with chapters on peak associations (e.g. ICC and WEF), industry associations, alliances, as well as clubs and think tanks, and facilitators. Covering the history, current role and future evolution of this dynamic category of associations, this work will be essential reading for students and scholars of international political economy, international relations, international organizations and global governance.

What explains the growth of a business, and more broadly the development or decline of a whole economy? What role does a particular entrepreneur or indeed a culture of entrepreneurship play? Does the evidence suggest that a particular structure or organizational form was or should be adopted to ensure best practice and commercial success? These fundamental questions have long preoccupied business and economic historians. With the current expansion of business and management education and training, the investigations and findings of the historian may have wider significance and relevance. This volume has been stimulated by the work of Peter Mathias, one of the leading figures in this field in the post-war period. Here a number of his former students--many now internationally distinguished historians--pay tribute in a book that explores the move from family firms to corporate capitalism. The contributors argue that sustained growth has never been a matter of a few spectacular technical breakthroughs, but instead rests on subtle economic and social transformations--in cultures, in economic organizations, and in the roles of science and technology.

Our comparative business historical examination of industry associations aims to enrich the under-theorized study of this distinctive type of meta-organization. We compare two New Zealand industry associations operating in the same supply chain but with differing degrees of associative capacity and types of external architecture. Our analysis of these associations builds on two strands of theory that rarely communicate with each other: New Institutional Economics (NIE) and Organizational-Institutional Theory (OIT). We demonstrate how NIE describes the structural potentialities for associational strength, while OIT addresses the relational context within associations. In turn, NIE's examination of external influences reinforces OIT suggestions that associations which are rich in social capital can become developmental in orientation. Our historical analysis supplies fresh theoretical insights into industry associations, thereby addressing conceptual issues of interest to management scholars who study bridging-type organizations. On this basis, we argue that business history and organization studies complement each other.

Excerpt from Trade Association Activities and the Law: A Discussion of the Legal and Economic Aspects of Collective Action Through Trade Organizations Coöperation is the keystone of civilization. Power - order - progress, - civilization itself depend upon the ability of men to work together for the common good. Just as the maintenance of the State requires cooperative organization, so too is there a compelling necessity for unity of purpose and action in industry if the progress of American commerce and the national interests are to be forwarded. If unreasonable legal prohibitions make cooperation between competing groups in industry impossible, even though not hurtful to the public, the result will be to compel a process of merger, consolidation and ultimate monopoly with its dangerous social and economic effects. We can encourage a cooperative organization of industry, without endangering competition. Indeed the preservation of the competitive system depends in no small degree upon the ability of business men, particularly the smaller business men, to work out their larger problems through collective action. Unfortunately, the wilful violation of the law by some associations has created a spirit of hostility and suspicion on the part of the general public toward any united action by business men. The achievements of our trade associations, redounding to the public good, have not been told. The strengthening of business ideals, the reduction of the wastes and frictions of trade, the increased efficiency in production and distribution, the vast savings to the public, all of which have resulted from the collective action of business men through their trade organizations, arc a closed book to the public. The great program of cooperation between industry and government, now being effected by the Department of Commerce, under the direction of Secretary Hoover, is just awakening a general interest and creating a realization of the importance of the effective organization of our industries, both in domestic and foreign trade. This book explores the background of the NRA, the most important economic measure of the first hundred days of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. It also is the history of the business community's efforts during the 1920s and '30s to emasculate the federal policy of maintaining a competitive enterprise system. A major contribution of this book is its re-evaluation of antitrust and trade association policies during the Republican era of Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover.
