For a couple of years, more and more micro-econometric studies in international trade use data on exports and imports on goods that are based on transaction level data collected by the customs. These data cover detailed information on the goods traded, its value, its weight, and the country of destination (for exports) or origin (for imports). In contrast to data from surveys of firms that were used in empirical studies in the past, these data do not only focus on "who trades and how much", but also on "who trades how much of which goods of which value and which weight with firms from which countries". These transaction data have been used in empirical studies that shed light on various aspects of trade in goods for the first time. This book contains a comprehensive survey of the international literature and selected studies that report results for Germany, the third largest exporter and importer of goods in the world market.

A detailed examination of WTO agreements regulating trade in goods, discussing legal context, policy background, economic rationale, and case law. The General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) has extended its institutional arsenal since the Kennedy round in the early 1960s. The current institutional design is the outcome of the Uruguay round and agreements reached in the ongoing Doha round (begun in 2001). One of the institutional outgrowths of GATT is the World Trade Organization (WT0), created in 1995. In this book, Petros Mavroidis offers a detailed examination of WTO agreements regulating trade in goods, discussing legal context, policy background, economic rationale, and case law. Each chapter examines a given legal norm and its subsequent practice. In particular, he discusses agreements dealing with customs clearance; “contingent protection” instruments, which allow WTO members unilaterally to add to the negotiated amount of protection when a certain contingency (for example, dumping) has occurred; TBT (Technical Barriers to Trade) and SPS (Sanitary and Phyto-sanitary Measures) agreements, both of which deal with such domestic instruments as environmental, health policy, or consumer information; the agreement on Trade Related Investment Measures (TRIM); sector-specific agreements on agriculture and textiles; plurilateral agreements (binding a subset of WTO membership) on government procurement and civil aviation; and transparency in trade relations. As suggested by its title, this e-book presents student-oriented materials focused on legal issues common to international business transactions. With an emphasis on sales of goods and services, the materials review international transactions from both the private law and governmental regulatory perspectives, domestic and international. Several features of the book distinguish it as a teaching tool from more traditional law school offerings. First, the book is offered in an electronic format which is designed to make extensive use of web-based resources. Among other advantages, this format (1) provides much cheaper, flexible and more accessible learning materials for students; (2) takes advantage of the excellent web-based resources that students are accustomed to using, including multi-media content; and (3) creates a flexible framework that allows professors to adapt, improve or otherwise modify content to suit their needs during successive iterations of the course. Second, the materials and format are designed to encourage students to take a more active role in their learning with an emphasis on skills building. Each chapter presents a problem and typically asks students to address legal issues as a practicing lawyer would, working through primary materials — cases, statutes and treaty texts. Third, the materials are written and prepared for the uninitiated and uninformed. Basic background explanations are always provided and all questions posed in the text are meant to be answered by the students — there are no abstract, obtuse or unanswerable questions set out in the materials. With guidance from their instructor, students are required to examine the material provided not only to learn the relevant law but also to build the essential skills of effective lawyering.
