In an era of globalization, trade in goods and cross-border services and capital flows play a key role in determining the economic growth path of countries. Over the last two decades, countries have embarked on several alternate tracks to liberalize and deepen their linkage with the world economy. The growing trade-investment nexus and the emerging developments lead to deeper international production networks, rise in cross-border trade in services and in regional trade agreements and so on. The debate of whether it is possible to empirically validate the potential benefits of this deepening trade-investment linkage is ongoing. The evidence in literature is, however, ambiguous. This book contributes to the literature by looking at Asian economies and at the EU, Maghreb countries and Pacific Island economics. It examines the issues under four broad areas, namely: (1) trade: theoretical and policy issues, (2) factor flows: impact on trade and welfare, (3) impact of trade and factor flows on environment and (4) institutions, international trade and policy issues.

Engagement Between Trade And Investment written by Niall Moran and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-03 with Law categories.

This book explores engagement between the trade and investment law regimes and the extent to which this is being driven by Preferential Trade and Investment Agreements (PTIAs). It provides an empirical analysis of engagement between the two regimes using data from 60 PTIAs and 60 Bilateral Investment Treaties concluded between 2005-2019 to see whether PTIAs result in increased engagement and whether they are doing so over time. The book explores eight of the factors identified as evidencing inter-regime engagement. These chapters look at when engagement is appropriate and to what extent it is appropriate in relation to each of these areas. Based on the findings of this book’s empirical and comparative law analysis of PTIAs, BITs, and the trade and investment law regimes, the book examines whether the conclusion of PTIAs compared to BITs has resulted in increased levels of engagement between the trade and investment law regimes. This book does not put forth the view that convergence between trade and investment is always appropriate, but provides recommendations as to how treaties may be formulated and interpreted in a manner that takes inter-regime engagement into account with a view to ensuring the harmonious simultaneous development of the two regimes. The question of the future direction for engagement between the trade regime and the investment regime is very topical in light of changes to the architecture of both regimes at present.

In recent decades, the international economy has witnessed fundamental changes in the way manufacturing is organised: products are no longer manufactured in their entirety in a single location. Instead, the production process is often split across a number of stages located in countries that are frequently far apart from each other. By spreading out their manufacturing and supply chain activities globally through international investment and intra-firm trade, Multinational enterprises (MNEs) play a focal role in this reorganisation of production. Our ability to understand the global economy, therefore, requires an understanding of the interdependencies between the entities involved in such fragmented production. Traditional methods and statistical approaches are insufficient to address this challenge. Instead, an approach is required that allows us to account for these interdependencies. The most promising approach so far is network analysis. ‘Networks of International Trade and Investment’ makes a case for the use of network analysis alongside existing techniques in order to investigate pressing issues in international business and economics. The authors put forward a range of well-informed studies that examine compelling topics such as the role of emerging economies in global trade and the evolution of world trade patterns. They look at how network analysis, as both an approach and a methodology, can explain international business and economics phenomena, in particular, in relation to international trade and investment. Providing a comprehensive but accessible explanation of the applications of network analysis and some of the most recent methodological advances in its field, this edited volume is an important contribution to research in international trade and investment.

Trade Related Investment Measures written by Chi-Chur Chao and has been published by World Scientific Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-20 with Business & Economics categories.

This unique book makes a contribution to the deeper understanding of various trade-related investment measures (TRIMs). The issues have been largely inspired by the use of trade policies on foreign investment adopted in China and many other nations from the 1960s to the 1990s. Building upon the existing literature and the authors' own work, the 20 chapters in the book examine, using several versions of general-equilibrium frameworks, resource allocation and welfare effects of both trade-related investment measures and investment-related trade/environmental measures. Traditional and duality microeconomic tools and modelling techniques have been extensively utilised in analysing various real-world, investment and environmental issues, especially those encountered in developing economies. Policy implications regarding optimal trade, investment and environmental policies that emerged from the analyses are also provided. This book is self-contained in applications of trade theories and related general-equilibrium modelling techniques. It may be used as an advanced textbook in trade theory and policy as well as a reference book for policy makers, professional practitioners and academic researchers in designing trade policies.
