Richly illustrated with 200 black-and-white and 32 color plates, this stimulating collection surveys the full range of 20th-century Chinese painting, covering all the schools and major artists, both within the People's Republic and elsewhere. Chinese artists now draw their inspirations from an amazing variety of subjects--airplanes and automobiles, Vietnamese refugees and Beijing opera, ancient cave murals and historical figures--and they have developed new techniques and formats that have greatly expanded the range of Chinese paintings. Their work reveals how traditional techniques, when reintroduced into unexpected contexts, can bring about strikingly new results. In light of the tremendous variety of artistic impulses and stylistic approaches that exist in 20th-century Chinese painting, and the rapidity with which these changes have occurred, it is quite remarkable that China's artistic tradition has not only been able to sustain itself, but continues to evolve in new and exciting directions. This beautiful volume captures the vibrancy of a national art that is stunning in its complexity and diversity.

Modern Chinese painting embodies the constant renewal and reinvigorations of Chinese civilization amidst rebellions, reforms, and revolutions, even if the process may appear confusing and bewildering. It also demonstrates the persistence of tradition and limits of continuities and changes in modern Chinese cluture. Most significantly, it compels us to ask several important questions in the study of modern Chinese culture: How extensively can cultural tradition be re-interpreted before it is subverted? At what point is creative re-invention an act of betrayal of tradition? How has selective borrowing from Chinese tradition and foreign cultrue enabled modern Chinese artists to sustain themselves in the modern world? By focusing on the art of Huang Pin-hung (1865-1955), particularly his late work, this book attempts to provide some answers to these questions.

Tracing the Past, Drawing the Futureexamines a crucial turning point in the development of Chinese ink painting in the twentieth century, a change represented by the beautiful and innovative work of four artists, Wu Changshuo (1844–1927), Qi Baishi (1863–1957), Huang Binhong (1864–1955), and Pan Tianshou (1897–1971). With careers spanning over a century of radical change in China, these artists were instrumental in propelling the ancient tradition of Chinese ink painting into the modern era in the face of compelling Western influences. As a group, their work represents an alternative approach to questions of relevance and modernity. This lavish book illuminates the context in which these artists worked, describes their overall contribution to the history of Chinese art, and highlights their individual ideas and achievements. In his introductory essay, Xiaoneng Yang offers a brief historical background for the evolution of modern Chinese painting. Richard E. Vinograd analyzes the ?alternative modernism? represented by these artists, each of whom worked in the brush-and-ink idiom, confronted the shift toward practices of the West, and gave new life through this confrontation to cherished traditions. Essays devoted to each artist are followed by individual entries discussing their works. Featuring more than one hundred works of both painting and calligraphy by the four artists, the book, which is published to accompany a traveling exhibition, also includes a glossary and detailed bibliography.

The University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) of the University of Hong Kong presents the Chinese painting exhibition Tradition to Contemporary: Ink Painting and Artistic Development in 20th-century China. The exhibition is curated from artworks within the museum's permanent collection. Works trace the evolution of ink painting in Hong Kong, and include many of the masters that have helped to build the city's art scene and museum collections. The exhibition and its associated catalogue offers audiences a broad overview of the provenance and aesthetic quality of individual works, and the cultural interactions among twentieth-century Chinese artists, curators, collectors and scholars in Hong Kong, mainland China and abroad. It makes reference to individuals and their networks, to teacher-student relationships and to the generosity of the numerous painters who have helped UMAG to grow the museum's holdings, and whose work constitutes the foundation of UMAG's educational work today. Since initiating the publicly accessible collection in the 1950s, UMAG has been closely connected to the development of these painters and their work, and has actively documented the evolution of their artistic talents and the Hong Kong art scene. «: »,,;,,,,
